The Tragedy of Gum Disease
Some form of gum disease affects up to 80% of Adult Americans according to often quoted statistics. Gum disease is also the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. There is about 2% of the population that is very resistant to gum disease. The rest of us are not so lucky. That means about 98% of us have to do things, like brushing and flossing to prevent gum disease.
However, it is apparent that brushing and flossing alone are often not enough to prevent gum disease. If they were, eighty percent of the population would not be afflicted with some form of the disease.
The irony and tragedy of gum disease is that most of us can prevent gum disease or stop an existing case from progressing. The problem is simply one of understanding. For example, daily removal of plaque is important to fight or prevent gum disease. However, the knowledge of how best to do that seems to be outdise the realm of common knowledge. Let's see if that can be changed a bit. Aside from good home care we also need to know professional care. There again, it is important to choose wisely the professional services that we utilize.
My book: What You Should Know about Gum Disease is my attempt to help fill in the gaps of understanding about gum disease. Along side the practical information in the book you will also find my personal experiences with gum disease and dental health.
