Countdown to World Thinking Day 2013

World Thinking Day 2013: February 22, 2013

World Thinking Day - History

World Thinking Day was created in 1926 at a Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference. Attendees believed that there should be a day when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world would think about the other "sister" Scouts.

The date February 22 was chosen because it was the mutual birth date of Lord Baden-Powell (founder of Boy Scout movement) and his wife Olave (who served as the World Chief Guide).

In 1932, the delagates of that year's International Conference suggested that the girl's donating to the World Association. Olave sent a letter to the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of that year asking them to donate one penny.

In the United States, girls are asked to donate to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund which donates to the World Thinking Day Fund.

Ideas for World Thinking Day

Service Unit or Neighborhood Level

There are many ways that a Service Unit/Neighborhood can celebrate World Thinking Day.

Passport/Travel the World: Each troop selects a country. The troop learns about their selected country (games, food, Girl Guide law/promise and uniforms, etc.). The troops then create a presentation or display for an event that they can share with other troops. Troops can share food, crafts, songs or games for their selected country. The girls "travel" the "world" with their passports - visiting different countries, getting their passports "stamped" and tasting new food or trying new games.

Art Around the World: Set up an art exhibit which the girls draw pictures depicting life in their chosen country.

Community Culture Day: Get different ethnic groups in your community to share their culture with the troops. They can share dance, food and languages.

WAGGS World: Create stations to learn about Girl Guiding and Girl Scouts around the world. Create stations to learn about the four world centers.

Where in the Islands are Juliettes Jewels?: A Scavenger hunt. Troops select a country to present. Every troop will provide the same information on their presentation boards/displays: housing, clothing, climate, GS/GG uniform, pledge promise. During the event, the girls will go around and find answers to questions. For each correct answer - they will receive a "jewel". At the end of the event, the girls will have a "string of jewels" that will be their SWAP from the event.

Ideas for World Thinking Day

Troop level

If your Service Unit/Neighborhood doesn't plant Thinking Day events (or you have a cookie booth scheduled that weekend!) you can plan a Thinking Day event just for your troop. Here are some ideas:

International Buffet Dinner Show: Every girl selects a country. The learn everything about the country - how Girl Scouting is different in that country, what kind of music they like, food, etc. The girls will dress in traditional costumes from their selected countries. They will create displays that feature the countries flags, maps, etc. to present to families. When the presentations are completed - the families are invited to the International Buffet of finger-food from the different countries.

International Currency (M&Ms):Take a bag of M&Ms and let the girls sort and find the different colors. Each color represents a different currency (Japanese Yen, Euro, Australian Dollar, etc). Leader finds out the currency rate and the girls determine which currency (in M&Ms) is worth the most. (And of course in the end - they get to eat the M&Ms!)

Games for Thinking Day

There are several games you can play with the girls to teach them about Girl Scouts/Girl Guiding and Thinking Day.

It's great to find games from the country that you are representing to present to the girls.

Here are some other ideas:

Girl Scout Jeopardy game is great for older girls to remind them about Girl Scouting.

World Centre Jeopardy focuses on the World Centers.

Guiding Jeopardy focuses on Girl Guides.

SWAPs for Thinking Day

SWAP's for a Thinking Day event usually represent the country you are focused on. This can be anything from a copy of the countries flag, the shape of the country or anything that can represent the country (example: England - phone booths, guard at Buckingham Palace, etc. Ireland - shamrock).

Food For Thinking Day

It's great for the girls to try foods from different countries. Last year, we had England for our country so we had tea and shortbread biscuits for the girls to sample. When we did Mexico, we had a Mom that showed the girls how to make homemade tortilla's. The girl's loved making them! Here are some other ideas:

Juliette Low World Friendship Fund

The Juliette Low World Friendship Fund is a fund that Girl Scouts can donate money and GSUSA uses the funds to support girls' international travel and participation in training and international events. There are three days that are typical days used to collect funds for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund: World Thinking Day (Feb. 22), Juliette Low's birthday (Oct. 31), and Girl Scout Birthday (March 12).

Thinking Day Postcard Exchange

For over 13 years, troops have exchanged postcards to help them learn about their world of Girl Scouting/Guiding. In 2010, there were 1,925 US troops participated with 495 International units representing 45 countries. Each troop leader decides on their limit (how many postcards you can afford to send out).

My troops have participated in the Postcard Exchange for 3 years. The girls select what they want to say on the postcard - they usually include information on the activities that they have done in the past year. They also may include some special areas in their state that they enjoy. We usually buy postcards that represent the area of the state we live in or just general postcards about our state.

We have received some very beautiful and unique postcards. One postcard that we received was a photo of the troop. We display our postcards at our Thinking Day event.
