Solving The Mystery Of Girls And Their Love For Horses

The Horse Review, a group here on Squidoo was created with the horse lover in mind. When Lensmaster Horse And Pony invited me to join her group, my first thought was while I'm a horse lover for sure, I'm not involved with anything horse related these days.

What could I bring to The Horse Review if I'm not currently involved with horses ? I then realized I can bring some lasting memories of past experiences to share.

When I was a Iittle girl, I fell in love with everything related to horses. I particularly fell in love with the thought of having my very own horse and showing him in shows. Those desires became a reality at the age of fifteen when I finally got a horse of my own, took riding lessons and in no time began showing him in horse shows. At last I was in horse heaven!

Recently in a conversation with my husband, I was regaling him with tales of my horse years and he posed this question to me:

"What is it about girls and horses?"

It was then I realized, I can indeed bring something to the Horse Review by creating a lens exploring why we girls love, adore and often worship horses.

The Lure Of The Horse Begins Early

Girls Fall In Love With Horses Early In Life

For some it begins early, straight from the cradle to the rocking horse. While the rocking horse I had as child differed from this picture, I can recall early bursts of imagination where my trusty steed, rather than eternally rocking back and forth on that same spot of carpet, was instead running freely through fields with me laughing carelessly astride him.

I was certain, in my child like mind, it couldn't get any better than that until........

........Until my first carousel ride. Now that was magical. I loved standing in line waiting, patiently inspecting each vividly colored, ornately bedecked horse pass by me while eliminating first one, then the other until I made my final selection. Then I would cross my fingers, close my eyes and wish real hard that I would be able to get to my horse before some other child who would surely never love him the way I did. Then the carousel would stop and off I would go in pursuit of my beautiful horse. I loved slipping my foot purposely into that stirrup and hopping up on him just the way I'd seen it done on the television.

But the real magic began when my horse took off floating up and down. That I was galloping in a never ending circle didn't concern me one bit. I would laugh and wave at those watching convinced they were all watching me and my magical steed. Yes, indeed I loved horses then as much as I loved the carousel itself.....and the truth be told, still love riding the carousel to this day.

While decades and decades have passed through my life, the memory while vague of that very first ride on a living, breathing horse is still alive somewhere in the distant cobwebs of my mind. Perhaps it's because of an old black and white photograph my grandmother used to bring out from time to time that refreshed my memory. Ironically that long ago photo isn't that different than the one here, except I'm a little older, awake and the person behind me was a teenage cousin. I remember the horses name, Blackie, who lived on my grandpa's farm. It was a little scary and exhilarating how extremely high off the ground Blackie carried me. Much higher than my rocking horse and even the magical mounts living on the carousel.

I think those rides on Blackie and the love I developed for him like the little girl in the photo below began to plant seeds of determination that one day I would ride my own horse as often as I wanted.

As life would have it, the law of attraction certainly worked in my favor. From those first early years until high school, I lived horses. If there was a horse movie showing at our local movie theater, I would be there watching until someone dragged me out. Paint by number sets? It was always a horse scene for me. Going to the county fair? You could find me in a horse barn somewhere savoring the smell of leather, hay and even the stinky stuff. I would be in horse heaven.

I guess it was destiny, but by the time I completed 9th grade virtually all my friends had or rode horses! Before long I was blessed by some encouraging stable owners who allowed me to ride one of their horses and considered him my own. After some time passed and I had some riding lessons under my belt, I began showing much like the girl here!

The horse I called mine was a beautiful Palomino who stood over fifteen hands, his name was Sun Kissed and with his long white flowing mane and tail and his beautiful golden coat, to me he was the most stunning creature God had ever created.

My life long dream had become a reality!

Peaceful Times Indeed - Riding My Horse

While showing my horse and the thrill of winning a ribbon or trophy after completing a challenging set of jumps was a proud and intoxicating adventure each time my horse and I accomplished this as a team, what really completed me were those peaceful times spent just wandering around. An aimless ride with no particular destination in mind down seemingly endless trails or following the small stream that meandered through the farm while the sun nudged it's way through the trees was a day to remember for a life time.

It was during these times, set right in the middle of those teen years of drama, angst and uncertainty that calmed the storm that seemed to be my life. I was spending the day with my best friend, my first love and I was blessed.

I wish my little tale could end with me telling you that with the passing of my childhood horse, there were other equine best friends who followed, but life happened and my horse days were spent in a one horse relationship with Sun Kissed.

I grew up and the paths of my life led me in many other directions. I will always cherish my horse and the experiences I was lucky enough to have lived and even all these years later still hold these memories especially close to my heart. I'm certain these times played a part in what ultimately defined who I am as a woman today.

So What Is It About Girls And Horses?

Why Do We Love Horses So Much?

So in conclusion to my tale, why indeed do young girls develop a passionate, undying love for their horses?

Here is how I believe it happens for some.

Exposure to horses begins early in our lives from toys, fairy tales, movies, photos any means that fascinate and infiltrate our minds. A loving bond paired with a desire to experience a relationship with the horse is planted as a seed. This tiny seed is nurtured and grows until determination sets in and spins reality into motion until those desires are realized.

I suppose taking this love affair into mind, it goes to show that with desire, love and determination, all things are possible.

I hope you enjoyed this little snapshot into a chapter of my past and pray if you are a girl who desires a horse, your dreams do indeed come true.

I have seen plenty of men that ride really well in the dressage for horses, but mainly women. A woman looks better on a horse.

I have never owned one. But somehow, living nowhere near horses I got bitten by the 'bug', collected models, drew them and eventually learned to ride and worked in stables. Now I'm nowhere near them and miss them very much. But to this day, I can't tell you how I ever even got exposed to 'the bug'. But it's incurable and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I love this lens Shirl. It brings back many memories from early childhood till now. Horses have always been a favorite of mine, never had one of my own, but still hoping. There are 4 horses that I go visit in their pasture once in awhile and spend hours with. I bring sugar lumps as treats and talk to them. They are such gentle wonderful creatures.

    Have a nice weekend!
