Little Girl's Bicycle - My Favorite Childhood Toy

Ranked #7,167 in Parenting & Kids, #245,500 overall

A Story of Sibling Love

Growing up in the early 1950's in a small, rural, southern town was difficult. I didn't have many toys that were not hand made and never really wanted much more.

There was one toy, however, that I wanted very much. My friends and cousins all seemed to have one of their own. If I wanted to play with this toy I would borrow it from one of them.

When I was ten years old my older brother came home on leave from the U.S. Navy. He noticed that I did not have this particular toy. Since we were accustomed to making our own toys he decided that he would make one for me.

We visited junk yards and hardware stores gathering all the necessary parts needed to assemble the toy. He did the work and I help by handing him the tools needed to do the job.

Finally it was finished. Now I had a Bicycle of my very own.

Although it was a boy's bike and it was too tall for a ten year old girl but that didn't matter to me.

My legs were too short for a 26 inch Bicycle so I would prop it up against the porch so that I could reach the seat.

Once I was on, I had to keep it moving until I came to another place to rest it so that I could get off. Even with this difficult situation there was nothing I enjoyed more than riding my bicycle.

I could now visit with my friends and cousins who lived just a little too far for me to walk and still be home in time for supper. I could also run small errands for my mother. This bicycle gave me freedom. I felt like a little bird who just learned to fly.

What made this Bicycle so special was that it was a gift of love from by brother.

Safety Comes First!

Little Boy Riding His Bicycle with Helmet

Bicycle Safety Should Always Come First!

Learn The Rules of The Road

  • Go out with your children and teach them the rules of the road.

  • Put a bike safety flag on each bicycle. It will draw the attention of drivers who are distracted by cell phone, GPS, and their own children. Drivers in larger vehicles, SUV's, and pick-trucks may not see your child until it is too late.

  • It is safer to ride on the sidewalk if your city allows bikes on sidewalks. Teach your children to dismount and look both ways before crossing the street. Never trust drivers. They are not looking for bicycles.

  • Children should learn proper hand signals.

  • Ride in single file. Riding side by side puts the one closest to traffic in jeopardy.

  • And make sure each rider wears a helmet!

My Bicycle Was Stolen

Don't let your bicycle end up at a police auction!

At the end of the day I would park my bicycle up against the porch so that it would be there ready for me to ride the next morning. One morning I went out to ride and my bicycle was gone. It had been stolen during the night. My heart was broken. How could someone be so cruel and selfish? Needless to say I shed many tears over the loss of my favorite toy.

Now I was back to walking.

Christmas of that year Santa left a shiny new Girl's bicycle for me under the tree. I was so happy to have a girl's bike and one that I didn't have to lean against the porch to reach the seat.

Register Your Bicycle With The National Bike Registry

Don't Let Your Bike End Up In A Police Auction

Since 1984, the National Bike Registry (NBRĀ®) has been working with law enforcement to return stolen bikes to their rightful owners. A bike registered with NBR, the only true national database, can be identified by police and returned to you instead of being sold at an auction.

You can find more information by visiting this link to the National Bike Registry.

Peddle Up and Tell Me About Your First Bicycle

Leave a comment and 5* rating if you like what you see!

Most of us have had at least one bicycle in our lifetime. Perhaps you still ride one occasionally or maybe everyday. I'm sure you remember the trials of learning to ride for the first time.

Hmm, I don't remember my first one ever--probably very girly looking, with a basket and definitely a banana seat! What sticks with me is a 10-speed Schwinn for Christmas later on. Twin brother and I both got green ones and were over the moon!

I loved your personal story and your brother's kindness. Thank goodness Santa came through for you, too. 5 big * and a fave

How wonderful, what your brother did for you! I love that. What a wonderful memory, despite the fact that it was eventually stolen.

I remember my first bike well and how I used to ride it around and around and around the block. And I remember the day the training wheels came off. Your lens brought that back.

I had bikes as a child, and as an adult. Loved the 'freedom' it gave me as a 'kid' and great exercise for a 'grandma', plus a nice way to get around in a small town. Unfortunately someone 'stole' my bike last month, so back to walking or driving!

I started with a scooter and a tricycle. Both my parents used to take part in cycle racing [shudder]. My daughter never showed an interest in bikes then a few weeks ago my partner brought her home a bike - she learnt to ride it within a couple of hours and now there's no stopping her and 'Cherry Blossom'! Great lens.

I love this lens and it is probably because I can really identify with you and your first bike. Great work here! I look forward to reading many more. Thank you for visiting my Pat Conroy lens and it was fun to learn that your husband was at the Citadel with him.

RocketMoms Session 3 - Assignment #1

Although I have been a member of Squidoo for a couple of years I was having a hard time creating lenses that were attractive and informative. Then I found RocketMoms by visiting a lens created by a RocketMom. I was so impressed that I wanted to know more about this creative group of women.

So here I am in Session 3 that began on August 17th. This lens is the result of our first assignment to created a lens about our Favorite Toy.

You can see more RocketMoms Favorite Toy lenses here. I know you will enjoy each one.
