A Different Kind of Stephen King Book
I have read a lot of Stephen King in my life, and have enjoyed most of it, I like a good scare. But this one is different. The story, the edge of your chair kind of hold it got on me were the same, what I had come to expect from King...
But this is told without the supernatural. It is the story of a young girl finding her spirit and her strength while fighting for survival in the woods in Maine. Its a coming of age story with survival being the goal. It shows how even a lost little girl can rise to the occasion using her wit, her determination and her heroes. It shows us how she finds her spirit and becomes a hero in her own right.
There is nothing supernatural in it, except, perhaps how I found it. I had never heard of this one. It was the first Stephen King novel I had ever seen on the racks next to the supermarket check out. But there it was, miraculously waiting for me to pick it up.

Stephen King Writes a Coming of Age Story About The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Stephan King is one of the most prolific writers of horror fiction, or any other kind, in the world. He is famous for possessed homicidal fathers, dogs, and cars mixed with stories of vampires and a plethora of monsters. However, in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon he tells the story of a nine year old girl who gets lost in the woods, discovers amazing inner strength and a connection to her heroes.
Trisha is hiking with her divorced mother and brother who are bickering as usual. She goes into the woods to pee, but mostly to get away from them.
She does not find her way back but goes further and further into the woods with nothing but her Walkman, whose batteries she has to hoard, her knowledge that her hero, Tom Gordon pulls games out all the time. She follows his lead, she uses her worship of him to go beyond anything she had ever thought possible before. Although she maintains her love of him, she finds that the strength is within and with God.
There is a presence which appears to be one of King's trademark supernatural beings*, but is something real, something that was important to Trisha to learn how to survive and transcend.
*The promotion for this book does portray this being as supernatural, I think to entice King readers, but it is not.
King's Own Words About the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
"My idea was to write a kind of fairy-tale, 'Hansel and Gretel' without Hansel. My heroine (Trisha) would be a child of divorce living with her mother and maintaining a meaningful connection with her father mostly through their mutual love of baseball and the Boston Red Sox. Lost in the woods, she'd find herself imagining that her favorite Red Sox player was with her, keeping her company and guiding her through the terrible situation in which she found herself. Tom Gordon, #36, would be that player. Gordon is a real pitcher for the Red Sox; without his consent I wouldn't have wanted to publish the book. He did give it, for which I am deeply grateful."'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' isn't about Tom Gordon or baseball, and not really about love, either," King says. "It's about survival, and God, and it's about God's opposite as well. Because Trisha isn't alone in her wanderings. There is something else in the woods -- the God of the Lost is how she comes to think of it -- and in time she'll have to face it."
Comments About the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Stephen King by a Variety of Reviewers
- The FS Site
- George T. Dodds admits to having read only one other King book. He does give a reasoned and sensible reason as to why he hasn't, based on King's own description of the book.
Dodd's is a "bushwacker' himself and very much enjoyed the apt description of the girl's ordeals and determination.
He liked it so much that he picked up a copy of The Green Mile at a garage sale, something he would not have done before. When he reads that, he will discover that it, too, is an unusual King book. - Blog Critics Magazine
- Howard Dratch starts his remove with the starling, 'Man reads King book and survives', paraphrase.
He also appreciated the book. His review tells us more about the plucky, intelligent 9 year old girl who is the heroine.
Dratch believes that books can often or always be judged by the first line, and he liked this one a lot.
"The world had teeth and it could bite you with them anytime it wanted."
This is a very good and detailed review that does not spoil the story. - CNN
- They have several paragraphs to give you a flavor for the book.
Stephen King the Ultimate Red Sox Fan
Stephan King is the ultimate Red Sox fan and baseball fan in general. In 1992 he built a full baseball stadium for the kids of Bangor, Maine. The team is the Bangor Youth and Amateur Baseball and the League, interestingly is "The Ghost League".
King is very generous with his money in the town of Bangor and here he was able to combine two long time loves, his hometown and baseball.
Here we can see King's unmistakable mug underneath rain gear. He is a true fan!
Who Is Tom Gordon?
Tom Gordon, relief pitcher, has been ranked 71 out of the 100 most valuable Red Sox.Stephen King asked his permission to use his name in the book. His signature pointing to the sky was a key aspect of what helped Trish. It helped bring her to her spirit both up above and inside of her.

- This one sounds like a really good book. I probably would not have selected it without a recommendation. The title doesn't sound like it would match the content at first glance.

- I have read many of Stephen King's books but not this one. It looks very good. It must be in the style of Rose Madder.

Other King Books for People Who Don't Like Stephen King
These are three Stephan King books that you will enjoy even if you don't like that kind of thing.
1. The Green Mile is a book that has supernatural elements, but these are the good kind. it is a book that grapples with right and wrong and the way things are. Things are not what they seem and the guards in a prison have to execute a man that they not only know is innocent, but who possesses a gift for humankind.
2. It may seem like more of a typical King horror book, but inside is a coming of age story about kids whose parents have failed. Yes, there is a monster who eats kids, but the monster can only exist when the adults ignore the kids and what they are going through. It is a great story about childhood and gives parents and teachers a lot to think about.
3. Carrie is King's first novel and yes there is a supernatural horror of a girl with powers that revenge her humiliation. However, it has a similar theme as did It. Carrie as a sweet kid raise by a sadistic, bitter mother and bullied in school..
Don't like Stephan King? I think you will like these four books. Start with The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

On The Cutting Room Floor
There isn't a movie, but I found a series of 5 on YouTube where some kids made a movie out of it. I didn't expect great, and I was prepared to be generous, but I just couldn't post them.
I liked the idea of these kids doing this, being creative, especially about this book, but I just didn't like what they did, however, if you want to see them they are on YouTube, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
