ONE Lens To Make A Difference

ONE is a new effort by Americans to rally Americans - ONE by ONE - to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. ONE is students and ministers, punk rockers and NASCAR moms, Americans of all beliefs and every walk of life, united as ONE to help make poverty history. ONE believes that allocating an additional ONE percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like health, education, clean water and food would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world's poorest countries. ONE also calls for debt cancellation, trade reform and anti-corruption measures in a comprehensive package to help Africa and the poorest nations beat AIDS and extreme poverty.

ONE aims to help Americans raise their voice as ONE against the emergency of AIDS and extreme poverty, so that decision makers will do more to save millions of lives in the poorest countries.

Lesotho, classified as one of the poorest developing countries in the world, has an average per capita income of just $402. I'm holding an EDUN ONEtee right now. Unlike other cause shirts that I pick up and then shove in my t-shirt drawer, this one is made by a designer and is fitted and stylish. I'd wear this shirt.

EDUN is a socially conscious clothing brand created by Ali Hewson, Bono and New York clothing designer Rogan Gregory. EDUN's aim is to bring the issue of long-term sustainable employment to the forefront via the world of high fashion.

According to the EDUN website:

In 1980 Africa had a 6% share of world trade. By 2002 this had dropped to just 2% despite the fact that Africa has 12 % of the world's population.

If Africa could regain just an additional 1% share of global trade, it would earn $70 billion more in exports each year - more than three times what the region currently receives in international assistance. If in addition, all countries in East Asia, South Asia and Latin America were each to increase their share of world exports by 1%, the resulting gains in income could lift 128 million people out of poverty.

FIGHT AGAINST GLOBAL AIDS AND EXTREME POVERTY MOVES TO CAPITOL HILL AND HEILIGENDAMM

St. Petersburg, Russia-Today, the leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) recommitted to the 2005 Gleneagles summit's comprehensive plan to accelerate development and help save millions of lives in Africa and the world's poorest countries, but have failed to set the concrete targets necessary to increase effective international assistance and help the world's poorest countries fight poverty. On trade, WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy leaves St. Petersburg with a clear mandate to secure a deal within a month, one that must stay true to the G8 2005 Gleneagles communiqué promise to "make trade work for Africa".
