Give the Gift of Deep Relaxation!

There's nothing like the gift of a massage. They're free to give and easy to do once you know a few basic techniques. I'm a licensed massage therapist. This page is a step-by-step tutorial so that you can give a massage like a pro. I've even made a gift certificate for you to print out.

This is a really long lens but I wanted to give you as much detail as I could about how to give a great massage. It's my gift to you.

Get a Massage Table

It's SO worth it

Trust me, investing in a massage table is well worth it, especially at this price. I have worked with my client on a bed or couch and it's back breaking and hard to reach. You need to be able to go all the way around your recipient. If you're good on your knees it would be better to work on the floor. A Thai Massage mat is great for that.

There are a lot of ways you can accessorize a massage table. You can get special sheets, although any twin fitted sheet will work (it might be a little loose depending on the width of the table as well as the height of the padding). There are heating pads, too. If you want a special treat, get memory foam padding then cover with sheets.

I work with the client on a no frills table like the one you see here. The main reason is it's the easiest to clean. I put one of those paper towels that tears at every half sheet on the headrest, tearing it half way up so my client can breath. (This is only face down. When the client is face up you don't use the head rest.)

I clean the headrest and table with a spray of alcohol and water. You can get cleaners that are designed especially to be used on vinyl. The manufacturer of my table warns that alcohol will break down the vinyl, but after using it two years, so far so good.

BE SURE TO CLEAN YOUR TABLE AFTER EVERY USE.

This is a heck of a deal! Especially for the non-professional. I use a table very similar to this in my massage practice. I'm tempted to buy this one just because the price is so amazing.

A great massage doesn't have to mean undressing and lots of oil. I do all of my massage work with no oil and the client fully clothed. It gives them greater security and they can relax more.

Thai Massage Mat

These mats make it easier to work on the floor. If your knees can do it (mine can't), working on the floor gives you the advantage of leverage because you can put more of your body weight into your movements, getting deeper without having to use your arms or hands.

When NOT to Give a Massage

Please be responsible

When in doubt, get a doctor's permission first.

Otherwise, do not give a massage when:
  • Either you or the recipient has alcohol or drugs in their system. I know a lot of people think it's cool to get a massage while under the influence - more relaxation, right? But it's really not good for anybody to receive while their system is already compromised and you don't want to give one in that condition either because you could really hurt somebody.
  • The recipient has uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease or any other vascular (blood vessel) or circulatory issues.
  • The recipient has varicose veins or bruises. You can work around them but not on them. If your recipient bruises easily or has chronic bruising they should get a doctor's permission first.
  • The recipient has contagious skin conditions.

Massage the Skull and Face

The First Step in a One Hour Massage

  • Have the person lie down on their back.
  • Massage the scalp first.
Position yourself behind the person's head so that you're facing their feet. With both hands on either side of the head apply gentle pressure to the scalp with the fingers making small circles. Use enough pressure so that you make contact with the skull but not so much that it hurts. Move your fingers along from the top of the head to the base of the skull. You can gently push with your thumbs along the top of the skull while you massage with your fingers. Hold the thumbs in place for a few moments as you push them into the skull. Do this about three minutes.
  • Get deeper into the muscles at the base of the skull.
With palms flat along either side of the head so that the ears are between your thumb and first finger and your fingers spread along the back of the head, gently turn the head to one side so that it is cradled in one palm. You'll feel the point where the balance is just right. With the hand that is free, massage the muscles that are all along the base of the skull with the tips of your fingers. You can also use this time to make circular motions along the back of the skull as you did in the first step. Make sure to cover as much of the skull (not the face) as possible.

Then gently move the head so that it is cradled in the hand you were just massaging with and repeat the process with the other hand. All of this can take 5 minutes or so.
  • Rest the back of the head in your palms (the back of your hands rest on the surface you're working on).
Although you're not doing anything, let the head rest like this for 2-3 minutes. It's very soothing and gives the body a moment to integrate what you've just done.
  • Massage the face.
With a very light touch, smooth your thumbs across the forehead, starting at the imaginary line from nose to scalp and pulling your thumbs to the side of the head. Do the same with the cheeks and then along the chin, about three times over the same areas. Put one hand on the forehead (horizontally) and the other with the palm over the top of the head for 2 or 3 minutes. You don't want to squeeze the head. Have the weight of your hands be a little more than just touching the skin.

I stay clear of massage oils like almond oil. They are very difficult, if not impossible, to remove from material - especially if you don't wash it right away.

Use This Lotion Instead of Oil

Yeah, you could use expensive massage lotion, but this stuff rocks!

Shea Butter Deep Conditioning Moisturizer by Jergens, 16.8 Ounce

I picked up a bottle of Jergens Shea Butter Lotion while I was in massage school. During our practice clinics we worked on people in an open room where everyone was dressed. We didn't want to use oil but sometimes we needed a little lotion to glide over exposed arms, hands, legs and feet. I took this to school and everybody used it. It has the perfect amount of lubrication but it's not too greasy and eventually sinks into the skin.

Massage the Forearms and Hands

The part of the arm between the hand and elbow

This video shows the kind of movements you need to make better than I can explain it. It is very similar to the kind of massage of the arms that I do. When he says "effleurage" that is a french word for the long strokes over the muscles. "Compression" just means putting your hand(s) flat on the muscle and putting your weight into it.

Be careful when working that close to the inner elbow. You don't want to actually put pressure on the inner elbow. He is putting his thumbs on the places where the muscles attach to the bone, but there are blood vessels and nerves in the inner elbow you don't want to mess with. I'd just work on the main muscles of the arm.

Massage the Upper Arms

Using a technique called "petrissage"

You can do this with the recipient either face up or face down or both. It works through clothing, too. Pay special attention to the kneading action of her hands. That's the technique I use.

Massage the Legs

Avoid the knees

Although she does a lot of long effleurage strokes in this video, the part I want to show you is the petrissage or kneading movements. It's a lot like kneading bread dough, actually. You'll have to work with whatever your recipient is wearing (or not) but you get the basic idea. Use the Jergens lotion if you have bare skin to work with.

Time for the Back

Have your recipient turn over and lie on their stomach.

Massage the Back

Avoid the spine and kidneys

I spend an average of fifteen minutes on the back.
  1. Release the shoulder blades
Stand or kneel at the head of your recipient. Place the palms of your hands on the top of each shoulder, then push each hand alternately so that the shoulder moves towards the feet. Repeat several times. It feels like a cat kneading.
  2. Work the entire back using petrissage and effleurage strokes.
At this point your hands will probably have a good idea of what to do. Let them decide what needs to be worked on and warm the muscles.
  3. Release trigger points.
Trigger points are those super tender points that you often run into along the shoulder blades or at the base of the neck. They can be found all over the body but those are the most common. If you find one, gently ease your thumb into it and ask your recipient if they can tolerate the pain. If so, hold the point for a 10-30 seconds. Then ask if the pain is better. It often will be. Continue massaging the back as above.

Massage the Gluteus Maximus

Yes, I'm talking about the behind, butt, bum, boo-TAY

This was the hardest thing for me to work on when I was first in massage school. I was kind of shy. Okay, a lot shy. But once I felt how great it is to have these muscles (the largest in our bodies) relax, I stopped being shy. Now I don't think twice about it. It's just another body part. Your recipient will think you have mad massage skills.
  • The technique is simple.
Make a fist and gently but firmly push the flat part of your fingers into the butt muscles, alternating hands. It's like punching bread dough down after it's risen. Work all over the muscle. There may be a tender spot. You can push your thumb into that as you did for the trigger points above. It can be very tender so be careful.
  • For extra credit.
While you have your fist pushed into the gluteus muscle, lift the leg up by the ankle with the other hand and rotate. You'll feel the bone moving around under your fist. That massages the gluteus from the inside out and it feels so good!

Massage the Legs and Feet

Massage the legs as you did on the flip side

Massaging the feet can be an entire massage by itself. You can spend as much or as little time as you like with it. I think this woman does a great job of demonstrating a full foot massage. I'm giving you just a sampling of her videos but you can find more on YouTube.

Masada Natural Mineral Salt Foot Cream

I love this stuff! It does leave the foot kind of slippery for a while, but it feels great to work with and smells even better. The sea salts are great for cleansing and grounding a person, too.

You're Finished!

Although this is really the most basic of massage routines, I've added a few extra tricks of mine that should have your recipient melting like butter at the end. If you've been trying to give a massage to someone and they ask you to stop and then go see a massage therapist, if the reason they do is based on technique they should be amazed by your new skills.

Always ask if your recipient is comfortable as you work. You don't want to hurt them. Although sometimes there's a kind of pain that feels kind of good, like a new tooth coming in when you were a kid. That's okay. But if they want you to stop, then stop what you're doing.

No two massages are ever the same and I tailor the massages I give to fit the client. I also do a lot of what's called energy work which is more just laying my hands on the body and letting energy flow through me into the client. It works really well but people don't think they're getting a massage unless you move their muscles and skin around sometimes.
