Giving Art Gifts For Christmas

Until I started creating my own artwork full time several years ago, it did not occur to me to give art gifts for Christmas. Now I know that most people appreciate receiving art as a gift.

How many people do you know that will splurge and buy some original artwork for themselves? By giving your special recipients art, you are doing something special for them that they probably would not indulge in otherwise.

The fun thing is that there are sites that you can place your art on that will then print your art on hundreds of items that you can gift to someone for Christmas. You can totally personalize and customize your gift item to suite the recipient all the while having your artwork or design as the background. Moreover, they make it so easy to do these days.

I will talk about some of those sites and resources for you to consider and I will show you some examples of items with artwork designs placed on them. It is my hope that I will motivate you to give art that either someone else has created or give some of your own artwork as a gift. We will even have a look at some different techniques for you to consider helping you tap into that juicy creative space.

The painting above is one of my original paintings titled 'Enchanted'. You can visit 'Enchanted' Gifts to see examples of items this painting is placed on.

Looking For Clues

How does one know what their recipient really enjoys when considering artwork if the recipient has never verbalized their preferences?
  • 1Look Around Their Home
What types of artwork do they surround themselves with while in their home setting? This will usually be your best clue so pay attention the next time you are visiting your recipient. Consider looking in the living areas, hallways, their bedroom, and even in their office area if they have one. Wherever they entertain guests will probably be your best place to observe their particular taste and style of artwork.
  • 2Their Style Of Decor
If your recipient doesn't have much artwork around them, take a look at their design style in general. If their style is contemporary, then you will need to keep that in mind with the artwork you choose to give. If their style is country, then look at country or shabby chic styles of art. If their style is minimalist, then your art needs to be very simple and minimal in detail.
  • 3Visit Their Office
If possible, you can pay them a surprise visit at their work and observe what they hang around them there. Not everyone is able to decorate their workspace but if they do, definitely notice what they have in their space. This is especially telling they share their home with a family member, as their home may not reflect their true taste in art in that case.
  • 4Visit A Museum Together
Another possibility for getting clues is to visit an art museum with your recipient. Of course, they will have plenty of opportunities to express their interest or dislike in this setting. Many cities and towns have monthly art walks where I live in the Pacific NW. One day a month, usually on a Friday or Saturday, several businesses will feature a local artist and display some of their artwork. This would be another fun way to get clues!
  • 5Consider Their Hobbies And Special Interests
If you aren't able to do any of the above before deciding, consider their hobbies and special interests. Do they collect anything and have it displayed around their home or work? Maybe they love all things to do with thimbles. Then you can scour the internet looking for artists that have created artwork that features thimbles. Perhaps they love gardening, or fishing, or horses, or puppies! Again, start searching for artists that feature these things.

If you aren't already an artist, creating your own piece of artwork as a gift may be a bit intimidating. Once you decide the style of art you are going to give your lucky recipient consider making it yourself. You may surprise yourself at how great you are at it! Let's take a look at a few styles below that you can consider creating before you decide against making it yourself.

Photography As Art

Spurs

Spurs

Photography can be very artistic and very appealing as artwork. Again, consider your recipient's special interests and hobbies when thinking of objects and subjects to give. If they decorate in and collect western art, then photos of cowboys, horses, boots, etc. would be excellent ideas to consider. If you are photo buff, you might visit one of the sites listed below and have your image uploaded as a print. Or you can click on this link and peruse other photographic prints as a gift to give.

Mixed Media As Art

Ebb And Flow

View Items Created With 'Ebb And Flow' Painting

Creating with mixed media is taking two or more types of media and combining them to create art. It can be very fun to create art using mixed media. The possibilities are also pretty unlimited.

In the painting above, I started with a flat canvas panel, which you can find at most arts and craft stores in the arts department. I used a Light Modeling Paste and spread it around on the canvas panel first with a pallet knife. You can use an old credit card as well. Once I had some lovely 'hills' and 'valleys', I let it dry for several hours (follow the instructions on the modeling paste). When it was very dry, I played with different acrylic paints and put very thin applications over the panel with a brush. With acrylic paints, you can make them watery like watercolors and when one layer is dry, you can add paint on top. Easy peasy!

The trick can be in knowing WHEN your painting is complete. I advise painting parts of your artwork and then putting it away for several hours. When you come back to it, you will have a more fresh perspective and might see things you hadn't seen before taking shape in your artwork. I didn't even see the face in the painting above until quite awhile later. :)

Mixed media can be as I described above or consider experimenting with pencil and India ink, pastels and acrylic paints, pastels and watercolors, layering decorative papers and acrylic paints, or layers of paper and stamps and acrylic paints. These are just a few of the possibilities of creating with mixed media.

Create Your Own Abstract Art

Untitled by Mark Rothko

Utitled by Mark Rothko

Abstract art can be very structured or free flowing. It can have many layers or just one. Look at the art piece above and notice how the artist constructed it. Do you think you can create something similar? Why not use this as an opportunity to be adventurous and see what emerges?!

Ask yourself these questions while studying this painting. What surface do you think it was painted on? What was the first layer of color the artist applied to the surface? What was the next color? Work forward with your recreation of this painting. What colors did the artist use? What medium did he use? Was it paint do you think? If so, did he use acrylics, watercolors, or oils? Maybe he used oil paints but who is to say that you couldn't create something similar using acrylics?!

Be bold! You can do this.

You might want to read another article I wrote about Creating Abstract Art. It may give you some more insight and help you to decide what style to choose either for a gift or for something to create.

Creating Abstract Art With Acrylic Paints

Watch this artist as she works with acrylic paints and paper on canvas to create a wonderful abstract piece of art. Doesn't she make it look easy? Notice how she uses water to make the drippy effects in her artwork. I've used a spray bottle of water to achieve this same effect. Hopefully she will inspire you to at least get a beginner set of acrylic paints and a canvas and brush and go for it!

  • KingLobster Nov 2, 2011 @ 12:11 pm | delete
Now this is a great idea that can actually come in handy. I particularly like that you included the part about creating your own abstract art. This could really make the gift even more personal. I don't think that I quite have the talent needed to take on that kind of task, but there are many who do. Perhaps I could paint something and called it "very abstract". haha. However, I do really like this idea as a Christmas gift. That is not something I would have thought of. Excellent work. Thumbs up from me.
