What creates the energy in a energy drink?
What Creates the Energy?
Energy drinks are everywhere you look! Why? Because we live in such a fast paced world, running on empty and little sleep. We all need ENERGY! What exactly creates the energy produced by these drinks?
Ingredients and amounts of ingredients vary from drink to drink; carboyhdrates, fructose, sugar, caffiene, guarana and taurine are a few found in the most common energy drinks. Individual bodies react differently to various drinks because of this but they all aim to increase one's energy and performance. However, the effects of these ingredients are often very negative and not healthy for one's body at all.

Specific Ingredients and Their Effects
Carbohydrates
High levels of carbohydrates are found in many energy drinks. These high levels of carbohydrates cause one's body to be unable to absorb nutrients into the blood stream properly. Carboyhydrates in the excessive amounts found in some energy drinks can also cause intestinal problems an can lead to dehydration.
Fructose and Sugar
Drinks loaded with fructose or sugar often act as a laxative. Fructose and sugar also clear from the bloodstream rapidly, creating a "crash". When the system crashes, one feels more fatigues than prior to consuming the drink. Dental problems are also associated with regular usage of energy drinks loaded with these two ingredients.
Caffiene
Caffiene acts as both a laxative and a diuretic which creates dehydration. Body temperature and heart rate both are increased by this ingredient. The result can be an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and the jitters. Caffiene can also negatively impact coordination, balance, sleep patterns and lower the immune system. While certain amounts of caffeine are actually good for you, the amounts found in many energy drinks are harmful.
According to the Mayo Clinic energy drinks have contributed to the increased obesity rates as well. Dr. Edward Laskowski stated that "...excessive amounts of energy drinks have been associated with manic episodes, seizures, chest pain, heart attacks and sudden cardiac death". Although these drinks are often advertised as performancing enhancing they are actually counter productive to sports performance.
