Glass Mosaic: The Origins

From The Past To Present

Glass mosaic tiles have been in existence for a long long time. In fact ever since glass was first produced, it has been cut into smaller more manageable pieces and used in art and for decorative purposes. Historically, such glass mosaic pieces would be hand cut into 'smalti'. Smalti was basically small colored glass tiles which were rough in texture and often contained small air bubbles and inperfections.

Artists of the Byzantine Empire are thought to have been the first culture to really develop and embrace the use of coloured glass mosaic, following on from the mosaic techniques of the Greeks and Romans. They expanded the use of glass mosaic to decorate temples and public areas, establishing the material as an important architectural device.

By the Victorian age, the fashion for glass tile was reemerging in the west, partly due to the new industrial processes which allowed it to be made in more consistent forms. This trend carried on through the Art Nouveau period of the early 20th century. The medium has always lent itself to artistic styles of architecture, in religious buildings and in public spaces and artworks. However until recently it has not been utilised that much in domestic settings.
