Types of glaucoma
Primary open angle glaucoma
- Information about high intraocular pressure and the cause of primary open angle glaucoma
- Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness because of the effect of increased intraocular pressure on the optic nerve.
- Less common forms of POAGs and other causes of optic nerve damage
- Glaucoma is not always caused by high intraocular pressure and is often without symptoms until vision loss occurs.
- Normal tension glaucoma - progressive optic nerve damage in the presence of normal intraocular pressure
- Pigmentary glaucoma - inherited POAG, commonly also near-sighted; pigment clogs the drainage, increasing the eye pressure
- Angle-closure glaucoma - most common in people with far-sightedness and/or of Asian descent, a limited angle between the iris and cornea causes pressure buildup behind the iris as a person ages and their lens grows.
- Acute glaucoma, or acute angle closure - the pressure increases suddenly; the eye becomes red, the cornea swells and clouds, it causes excruciating pain and blurry vision - emergency condition
- Childhood glaucoma - primary forms are due to maldevelopment of the drainage system in the eye (trabecular mesh), secondary forms are due to disease or other non-genetic causes; usually results in blindness in the first year of life
- Trauma-related glaucoma - trauma that disrupts the eye's drainage system can result in the disorder
- Exfoliation syndrome - this can result in either open angle or closed angle glaucoma, buildup on the lens of the eye flakes off and clogs the trabecular mesh

Controversial treatment

A controversial medical treatment for many diseases, cannabis has also been implicated as a treatment for primary open angle glaucoma by reducing the intraocular pressure. The main resistance for continued federal illegality are cardiovascular side effects. Read here for more information.
What do you think?
Do you think medical marijuana should be used for glaucoma treatment?

Absolutely!
colleen_w says:
There are people who are using medicinal marijuana to alleviate symptoms associated with their glaucoma and finding that it does make their quality of life much better on a daily basis. Great lens! Thumbs up!
No way!
JGracey says:
I have glaucoma and don't think this is a necessary treatment, unless all other treatment fails to control it. I've had an acute type of glaucoma for 20 years that's controlled with laser surgeries and eye drops.
You really need another choice besides "absolutely" or "no way" - it's impossible to give an answer that works. How about "under certain conditions, maybe"
How about you?
