Glen's Lensography

This lens is about me: Glen... what I like, what I do, who I am, the world around me and a choice selection from my lens portfolio.

About Me

I'm into a LOT of things. My tastes, opinions, interests and hobbies are varied. Reading, writing, movies... and not just watching movies but the filmaking process behind it... graphic design, music... and not just listening to music, I play bass and drums... typography, still photography, food... and not so much making it, but eating it. My wife is a fantastic cook.

And the list goes on.

So As I see fit I'll add to this lens my interests, in categories. Throw in a few books I've read. And maybe mention a couple of interesting tipping points in my life.

My profile avatar is my eye, photoshopped in there is one of my kids running down a jetty.

Me and Squidoo

I take great pleasure in writing up instructions on how to do "things" and being able to reinterpret information to make it more understandable to the average user.

Squidoo is not that hard to learn, but I'm trying to make it even easier for those who I'm inviting to join the site.

As an active and loyal user I've racked up a list of accomplishments that I'm proud of. Number 1 lens, Citizen Squid, Forum Moderator, Guest Editor... and a few other things that isn't as easy to put labels on, such as helping out people with HTML, pointing out what's wrong with a lens (and also pointing out how to fix it), devising new and interesting ways of improving the presentation of a lens (which goes back to the HTML and CSS stuff).

I also run two Squidoo 'support' sites. They're not official, but they do have a thumbs up from Squid HQ. They are www.lensroll.com and www.squoogle.com.

Squidoocentric

Music

I enjoy listening to it and love playing it. My appreciation for music is far wider than my somewhat eclectic tastes.

Currently Reading

I can't give a review on this book... yet. I'm about 5 pages in, just started reading it last night.

I love IDEAS. I am enthralled by CREATIVITY. It excites and fascinates me.

Hopefully this will teach me a few things I don't already know.

Graphic Design

Here's a couple of How To guides for non-designers who have businesses to come up with something that's better than average.

A little bit more about me...

Here's me...

I was born at a young age...

...but seriously, I'll start this when I was 18.

18, met the love of my life. 19, started dating her. 20, got engaged to her. 21, married her.

We didn't plan to have kids straight away. But apparently you don't need to plan those sort of things. They just happen. So 9 months and two weeks after getting married we had our first child.

We went on to have another 3. Yep, that's right, I'm a father of four. Fairly evenly spaced, almost 2 years between the 1st and 2nd, 2 years (-4 days) between the 2nd and 3rd and 18 months between the 3rd and the last.

I had done an apprenticeship in Fitting and Machining. In fact started and completed the trade and kept on to work in Quality Assurance. I'm in Australia, just in case you didn't know. Where I was working was a weapons and engineering facility. We made assault rifles for the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces. As well as other interesting bits and pieces.

I left there, and we moved (at the time with just two sons) to Newcastle (two hours north of Sydney). The reason for the move was because where the last job was at. Lithgow. Truly a hole in the ground. It's situated two hours west of Sydney. In a valley. Very cold there. I couldn't stand the cold anymore. The job was great. Just the 45 minutes travel to and from work was perilous. Especially in winter. Occasional snow, but the ice and fog were the greatest dangers. Too many near misses. I was actually living in Leura (Blue Mountains) at the time. I could have moved closer but I figured if I'm going to move it might as well be somewhere warmer. And Newcastle is such a place. And it's on the coast. Not that I'm a beach person but I had had enough of mountains and wilderness for the majority of my childhood and early adulthood.

We had our third child, a girl. A princess who has grown into a bit of a tomboy. Though she still loves to play with dolls. We hadn't planned on having a fourth child. Because that requires something bigger than your average sedan. So our fourth, a girl, surprised us. She was a real little character. A daredevil (she could walk at 8 months, but at 7 months she could climb ladders) who would throw herself off the boys top bunk knowing that I'd never fail her.

Mind you it's really hard to keep up a reputation like that when you don't expect it. Only once we had a mishap. But thankfully it was only off the computer desk that she had climbed up on.

The daredevil has grown into a diva. She's a regular little Bratz doll. She has a passion for fashion. She's 9 now, so the other girl is 11, and the boys are 13 and 15.

To be continued...

* The children's names have been avoided due to the fact that I don't want their full names and identities all over the internet before they're old enough to decide and choose how they want to manage their own reputations.

Films and Filmmaking

I love a good movie. First and foremost for me it's about the story. Then in a close second is the acting and camerawork. Special effects comes third, though by no means unappreciated. I'm one of those people who also love watching the film with the Directors Commentary on.

Humorous Undertones

Sometimes my mind goes off a tangent, my fingers barely keep up. We're not talking Laugh Out Loud, more like offbeat and whimsical. You kind of pass it by and then do a double take.

Miscellaneous

One is the loneliest number... so until these ones can find at least one other relative which will justify being rewarded with a Featured Lens Module, I'll just lump them together.
