Glenn Close Stands Out In All Fields

One of the first movies I saw her in was The Natural. It was a small part, Robert Redford had dumped her years before when a baseball groupie lead him astray. But there he was making his comeback, and there she was in the audience standing, after all those years, to give him the inspiration. She was a symbol of being there for your man, but to me, also a symbol of strength in a woman. I don't think that is what she was meant to be, but Glenn Close, in that part, was more than the part was supposed to be.

Before that she was GARP's mother. The crisp and pragmatic Jenny, who calmly raped a comatose man in order to have a child unemcumbered. It was a cold act; in the book she was a cold person. This was again a small part, it was Robin William's movie, but there she was, giving a humanity to Jenny.

Jagged Edge: she plays a lawyer who is hoodwinked by her client, a vicious and wealthy murderer. She was a dupe who needed to be rescued in the end, yet there was an unintended strength. The only movie I didn't like her in was Maixe and only then because she was just so much better than the material that she made it look even worse.

In all these movies, she made the part into something that was better than intended, making the character more than she was meant to be. She did this without ruining the story, but rather adding to it in spite of the script.

And then there was Alex, the psychpathic one night stand who terrified Micheal Douglas. So many people hated her. But also so many sane women identified with her. That might have been because those women recognized that the Douglas character kind of deserved some of what he got. I thought that was it then. However, now, looking back over Close's body of work, I think it was because her talent and personal depth of character was able to let people see the humanity in someone even as deranged and dangerous as Alex. We were able to see it closely enough that we weren't afraid to see ourselves.

And today, Glenn Close works hard to make sure that more people honor the humanity and the dignity of the mentally ill. What a woman!

Three reasons to love Glenn Close

1. She has a long and distinguished career as an actor, on the silver screen, in TV and Broadway. She was won prestigious awards in all area. At the same time her resume indicates that she does not take herself too seriously nor demand constant glamor. She has extended those talents to producing and directing vehicles that have been both entertaining and enlightening.

2. She is an advocate for the dignity and rights of the mentally ill.

3. She has lived much of her non working life in normal communities, eschewing Hollywood and constant glamor for a life that is normal as possible.

Glenn Close Takes Risk to Help The Mentally Ill

The entire story is in this AARP article. Its well worth reading, inspiring and informative.

"Her involvement in 2009 will be riskier: in the year ahead Close, 61, will headline a national advertising campaign intended to diminish the stigma of mental illness. The actress will represent the face of the three most common mental health disorders: depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. "When I first thought about doing this, I wondered if people would think that I was mentally ill," says Close. "Then I thought, 'What's the alternative? Not to do it?'"

"She gets nothing from this," adds Fountain House president Kenn Dudek, "and it is in fact a little dangerous. Everybody knows that if you come out and admit a connection with these illnesses, you risk being thought of as unreliable or dangerous, when in fact most of the mentally ill are not."

Glenn Close Philosophy

"It always amazes me to think that every house on every street is full of so many stories; so many triumphs and tragedies, and all we see are yards and driveways. "
Important!

"You have to love the characters you play, even if no one else does."

This is why she is able to make them all more than they would have been.

Glenn Close Philosophy II

Acting, to me, is about the incredible adventure of examining the landscape of human heart and soul. That's basically what we do.

Glenn Close is Glamor

Glenn Close in a Dangerous Movie

While Glenn never plays it safe, this movie stands out. Her portrait of the aristocrat with nothing else to do but play a game with someone else's life is devastating. However, in the end, she certainly gets the worst punishment. She deserved it, but I wonder if I would have felt as sympathetic had the actress not been her.

papawu says:

Are you kidding?! She was definitely out of her noodle. It takes two to tango baby. She knew he was married and yet continued to persue him. She was obsessed.

julcal says:

No, she was a textbook case of psychopathic obsessive-compulsive borderline, WITH psychotic features :)

julcal says:

Alex was toally Evil. Beyond borderline right, beyond OCD - she set out to do harm. OR maybe she was just an exceptional OCD borderline! :)

She Was Taken Advantage of And Fought Back and Here Is Why....

Jools99 says:

She was the archetype for 'a bunny boiler', deranged but charismatic, a scary combination.

JoanneOtt says:

She was quite nuts, but the Michael Douglas character was far from blameless also. This was a great movie and acting by both her and Douglas.

hlkljgk says:

however, she took it a bit too far, no?

Jimmie says:

Well, they were both wrong, but it's nice to see the man running scared for a change.

charlino says:

I think she may have known what she was doing, but she was not about to be the victim in this romance. Woman with issues? Yep. Michael Douglas' character had plenty of issues, too. IMO, both were victims of each other.

No only do I think Glenn Close is beautiful in her own unique way, but I do think she is a very diversified actress and I agree, she does actually make the character real to us.
