How did it come to this?

eBay was such a fun place to buy and sell the most outrageous stuff when it started. It actually was a giant flea market, trade show, and garage sale. Thousands of people bought and sold everything from baseball cards to clothes. These early sellers and buyers built a site we all came to love, eBay, the worldwide online auction site.

Today, much to the collective heartbreak of all of those of us who were part of that beginning, hundreds of thousands of small sellers who depend on income from their sales at eBay can no longer afford to stay.

Powersellers are angry and leaving. Buyers are beginning to shop elsewhere in search of their once plentiful & unique bargains. eBay is becoming a marketplace for cheap imports and large department stores. It isn't what we built anymore.

Beginning in 2005 and continuing periodically, several increasingly successful boycotts have taken place. Define successful? With each successive boycott, more buyers and sellers become aware of the blatant greed, non-existent customer service, Paypal issues, feedback and search problems and more.

Not only that, but eBay continues to insult the very customer base that made them what they are by making it impossible to FIND what you want to buy or keep any profit from SELLING anything.

I know not everyone will agree with me. That's the way it should be. I know too that there are many MORE reasons we came to this point--a boycott. Will it work? I don't know. Am I participating? Haven't listed on eBay for more than a year. Haven't bought there in many months. Don't plan on it, either. And I'm only one. 'nuff said...

For anyone out there who hasn't heard of the eBay Boycott, or doesn't understand it, I've collected some news links to better explain what has been happening to what WAS the greatest shopping experience around.

If you buy on eBay, I encourage you to become better informed about how this company treats those it does business with (its sellers AND through them, it's buyers). I encourage buyers to get a feel for how eBay really feels about you, they want to tell you what to buy and from who.

I urge eBay stockholders to learn more about how the impact the most recent 2008 changes that management is making will have on the YOUR bottom line, down the road...if the real buyers and sellers leave...

eBay Culling the Herd?
BEST ARTICLE I'VE SEEN YET!!!

The "buzz" this week is that on line auctions are falling to the wayside in favor of fixed priced venues. Is it possible that the CEO of eBay (EBAY) has access to a crystal ball (or medium), which told him that the future of on line auctions is not in eBay's future? Or, is all this "buzz" the result of eBay sellers simply being maneuvered to leave eBay on their own accord and/or adapt to a 100% fixed price format?
EBay Feedback Cutoff Kicking In, Sellers Angry
When eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) announced back in January that it was pulling the plug on its longtime policy of letting sellers leave negative feedback on buyers, those self-same sellers were royally peeved. Now that the policy is set to go into effect, on Monday, May 19, the ire of eBay sellers shows no sign of abating. Boy, are they p.o.'d. Here's what they're telling me.
eBay Changes the Rules of the Game, Again
eBay made a post to its Announcement Board that contains a large number of significant changes to policies. It also said it is rolling out an expanded version of the Seller Dashboard this week, and announced changes to Best Match, eBay's name for the default sort order of search results.

eBay Wants Small Sellers!
After telling a gathering of high-volume sellers that eBay is becoming a more retail-like site, eBay executives Lorrie Norrington wrote a special post on the eBay Ink blog to tell the community that eBay does indeed want to retain small sellers. Here are some actions that speak louder than words.
eBay System Maintenance??? LOL Or did the sudden drop in listings create a vacuum?

eBay Tells Sellers, Shape Up or Ship Out
While eBay's President of Global Marketplace Operations Lorrie Norrington didn't actually say, "shape up or ship out," it was clear that was the message she gave to a small gathering of eBay sellers on Wednesday. "If you cannot, or will not change business practices to provide a great customer experience, then eBay is not for you - As I said before, sellers who do not make customer service a priority make it difficult for everyone and are not welcome on eBay."
eBay: Stifel Cuts Rating; Sees Competitive Risks
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Scott Devitt this morning cut his rating on eBay to Hold from Buy. He says that the shares offer "limited upside potential in the near term," and that the company "faces meaningful longer-term risks from Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG) which could undermine the terminal value of the business." Devitt adds that "while Amazon's long-term market opportunity is larger than eBay's, it trades for a 25% discount in market capitalization."
Paypal & eBay To Rule The World? Part One: Australia The Pawn For A One Sided Game Of Chess
"No less than 48 comments prior to me reading this and not a single positive note with regard to this policy move." This is what I was thinking after less than 24 hours from the time I read the post that appeared at AustraliaIT.com.news regarding Ebay/Paypal's announcement that would force all Australian Ebay account holders to use PayPal and no other choice of payment option starting June 17th 2008. Those 48 comments have grown quickly to a much larger number now and continue to grow everyday that passes. The Ebay account closures and boycotts will increase more now than ever. I can only imagine how much worse this will get if Ebay doesn't wise up!

What's in Store for EBay? Outlook Hazy
This is what we know about eBay's current state of affairs based on recent news: a) CEO Meg Whitman is apparently following Mitt Romney on the campaign trail; b) John Donahoe, head of eBay's marketplace division, has been fingered as a potential CEO successor, and he's complaining to anyone who will listen that the site looks like a flea market; and c) eBay users are mad as hell and they're writing to the New York Times to complain about it.
eBay sellers are split on changes
The significant changes that eBay announced last week have merchants abuzz as they analyze and react to the impact that the restructured fees, modification of the search and feedback functions, and other changes will have on their sales and profits.
Update: eBay lowers fees and tightens seller standards
eBay unveiled changes to its online marketplace Tuesday that the company characterizes as sweeping and historic and that are aimed at boosting sales by making the shopping experience simpler and safer.
Interview With eBay's John Donahoe, Possible Next CEO
The FT interviews John Donahoe, eBay's president of marketplaces, who is finally addressing an issue that eBay has ignored for a decade: its buyer experience. Just as important, the FT suggests that the former Bain consultant will be Meg Whitman's eventual successor. We believe it's time for a change at the top of eBay, so we regard it as good news that observers have begun to talk succession plans.
On eBay, the buyer better beware!
Despite a lot of publicity that eBay is going after fraud, the bottom line is that the buyer better BEWARE when they purchase something on eBay, or for that matter, any digital auction site.
Ebay Sellers Boycott gains traction; competing sites grow
In the early morning of January 29th, 2008, President of eBay North America announced coming changes to the eBay Marketplace. As would be expected, all changes were presented with the idea of, "improving the overall experience for our customers - both buyers and sellers." The categories of change were laid out by Mr. Cobb; fundamental changes for pricing, seller standards, incentives and Feedback. You can read the full unedited version of Bill Cobb's eBay changes announcement here at eBay. If the changes announced didn't seem like enough, Bill Cobb also revealed he would be leaving eBay and this was his last announcement he would provide.

just for the boycott, I can't afford to really leave. I'll be listing again. Just a temporary boycott for me.

Renagade says:

I am torn...love the excitement of eBay BUT has gotten out of control with its control! Will still do auctions but Have been moving stuff to Blujay. Gotta tell you all....Blujay ROCKS! Check it out! Best group of sellers around!

CabinFever says:

Pretty much have to leave. How can a person make legitimate business plans and projections even for this year, let alone for a 5 year plan? Then the whole PayPal connection is getting very scary! When they take hundreds of dollars and hold it for an undeterminate amount of time (until they figure out what their issues are,) it really messes with the business's cashflow, thus forcing me to dip into personal finances unexpectedly. Not good business not to mention giving me anxieties I don't need! It is not fun anymore. I am closing my store, but may throw auctions out there upon occassion. I have stores at OLA.com, ebid.net, and Etsy.com.

I'm leaving permanently & setting up shop somewhere else. No more eBay for me!

funcoolcollectibles says:

Yes we left ebay just a little over a year ago and haven't looked back! Yes my fellow sellers, there is life after ebay and it's looking mighty fine :)

michelle says:

Yes I will be leaving. There again if YOU DON'T take care of the people that work with and for you,who will you be faithful to?It's a never ending cycle.

Lanascountry says:

I left at the first of the year (2008) but have been
actively working for alternative site building and PSU since
2004/2005. I was a silver level PS for sometime and a reg. PS a LOT of the time. I want to thank the owner of this lens. It is great! I care very much about two auctions sites now.
They are Webidz.com and Yourhighbid.com BOTH are working very hard to be site leaders and Webidz actually places THIRD among all sites in auction sites in 2007. I cannot say that I will NEVER sell on ebay again, as that would be a lie..I may but I will NOT be happy to at all..I love what I am doing SO much more!

swimswithfishes says:

Nice Lens & I am rating it 5 stars for sure! I stopped my regular listings on eBay in early March & only ran some loss leader auctions with carefully worded descriptions telling my customers to come over to OLA to see my items there. Since last week I have opened a store on Blujay which is looking very good for future sales! I also have 9 eBay Boycott videos on my first lens for everyone to see! Keep up the good work & Boycott victoriously! Cheers! Swims

grasshoppah says:

have already started the move...now have listings on bluejay...will try others also...i have had enough of evilbay...

PSU was "born" when eBay implemented rate increases that significantly impacted sellers large & small. The fee hikes affect buyers also, as most sellers have no choice but to pass on the eBay fees to buyers. Keep up with the latest discussions by current and former eBay sellers.

Ebay used to be a place to find good deals but they continued to mess with something that wasn't broken. Sellers will only take so much.
