Toward a New Paradigm

The world is a dynamic and interconnected system. The human race has established its own technological and hierarchical survival system and though this system is necessarily connected to the wider Earth upon which it depends, it appears that our system is more tangential to the natural world than integral to it. Our connection to the planet is fragmented at best, as only some individuals interact with the natural world on a regular basis. Often our interactions with what we call nature come from the position of tourist or a scientific observer. This stands in opposition to someone who operates from a visceral sense of participation with a living environment into which are integrated. The concept "natural world" alone indicates the partition we have constructed between ourselves and our environment.

The result of this separation has made us able to do great damage to the world, as we no longer feel the world to be part of ourselves. Today we are facing the rapid outcome of our deeply held beliefs of separation. Our planet is in peril. We have transformed the planet with our ignorance, and now we must begin to transform ourselves with wisdom in order to continue human existence. I have created this lens as a central hub to information which I hope will give readers some insight into our crisis and some practical solutions we can employ.

Implications of the Coming Massive Changes

Many of the links I have organized here could fit into more than one of the general categories. This suggests that real transformation will not be an isolated, mechanistic change, but a holistic shift which, as we progress, will transform nearly every aspect of our lives. This may sound frightening, yet we are already facing radical change whether or not we do anything to prepare for it. We have to learn to be dynamic and fluid in the face of the upheavals that we will likely face. It may seem easier in the short term to do nothing, or do very little, but the reality is we are not being honest about the situation we as a species are co-creating, both actively and passively. It is by asking questions, taking action, connecting with others, and pushing back against the devastation, that we will grow in knowledge and empowerment as individuals and as a society. Taking this active approach will better strengthen us for the days ahead, no matter what they may look like.

Radical change on a national or societal level is both scary and destabilizing, and remains fairly abstract until it actually occurs and it is too late. This is why it is unlikely that we will have rapid, radical change come from a government mandate, until it is too late. Creating a systems shift from on high can potentially destabilize the nation and the world, so the governments and corporations will likely cling to the status quo, and have the support of aspects of society who don't want to see change happen too fast. Because of this, we must continue to push the entrenched powers to begin moving in the right direction, but simultaneously we as individuals and communities have to take responsibility for making changes that will not be convenient, easy, or readily apparent. If we want to get serious about real empowerment, real independence, and real environmental stability, we as individuals are going to have devote a lot of time in often unfamiliar arenas that will effectively improve the situation.

Because we have created a sort of temporary equilibrium within an inherently unstable system, changing the situation for many of us will likely generate instability, which could be economic, emotional, spiritual, or social. This instability will either come initially as we reevaluate our lives, our careers, and how we spend our money and as we fumble for the right path and the right vocabulary to manifest something more positive, or the instability will come as the result of our reaction to massive systems change and collapse, when we have done too little individually and must bear the burden of what we have created together. Neither option will be easy or predictable, and predictability is what we are clinging to. We just have to accept the reality of change and take the most intelligent and effective action we can.
