Global Warming

Global Warming Information

Global warming is one of the biggest concerns facing our planet today. The earth's average temperature is rising drastically and scientists fear that we have only just begun to feel the effects. The world's glaciers are melting, seas levels are rising and our animals are slowly disappearing. Storms are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity.

Global warming is going to effect every person on the planet. It's time that each one of us do what we can to help combat this global threat.

Global Warming Definition

Global Warming Definition

Global warming is the term scientists use to describe the overall rise in the earth's average temperature. In addition to normal cycles, people are pumping large quantities of gases into the atmosphere. These gases are allowing the sun's light to enter but are not allowing the heat to escape . The more gases in the air, the more heat that gets trapped, effectively turning the earth into a giant greenhouse.

The Earth's average temperature rose about 0.6° Celsius (1.1° Fahrenheit) in the 20th century. Scientists believe that by the year 2100, the average temperature will have grown by 1.4 to 5.8 degrees Celsius (2.5 degrees F. to 10.5 degrees F.).

Causes of Global Warming

What exactly is causing global warming?

Global warming is caused by large quantities of greenhouses gases being pimped into the atmosphere. These gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Where are these gases coming from?

Most of these gases are coming from our factories and industries. They are produced by burning fossil fuels. These fossil fuels like coal and oil are used to make everything from electricity to plastics. We also use them to power our cars and heat our homes. The more of these gases that get burned the greater the greenhouse effect.

The sun itself also has an effect on global warming. As the earth's position to the sun varies constantly so does the amount of light and heat that gets absorbed by the earth's atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases are also on the rise due to vast areas of forests being burned. As these trees are burned all the gases that are stored up in them are released into the atmosphere.

Scientists also claim that volcanoes are a contributer to global warming although a minor one.

Effects of Global Warming

What are the effects of global warming?

Global warming is on the rise. As the earth's average temperature increases so do the effects that it is having throughout the world. More and more of the globe is suffering and if nothing is done these effects will only worsen as time goes on.

Some of the more noticeable effects are:

Polar ice is melting

Mountain snow caps receding

Storms are intensifying

Heat waves

Droughts

Sea levels rising

Floods

Increase in diseases

Glaciers shrinking

Increase in the number of forest fires

Coral reefs dying

Farm production

Animals becoming extinct

Fresh water supplies being contaminated

Prevention of Global Warming

How you can do your part.

By now you should know enough about global warming to recognize that it is a significantly urgent and grave problem. We all need to do our part in playing an active and responsible role in saving our planet. Fortunately, there are many little things that each of us can do decrease the volume of dangerous greenhouse omissions blanketing the earth.

Here are ten things that you can do immediately:

1. Replace all the regular incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use approximately 60% less energy so you won't only considerably cut down on the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, but you'll save money in the long run as well.

2. Ensure that you furnace and air conditioner filters are cleaned and replaced regularly.

3. Put a cover on your pots when cooking. Believe it or not, you can save a lot of energy with this simple practice.

4. Reuse bags when shopping or purchase non-disposable bags for all of your shopping. Disposable bags release methane and CO2 into the air and pollute our land.

5. Save water by taking a shower instead of a bath. Additionally you might consider purchasing a low-flow showerhead reducing energy savings even further.

6. Start or join a carpool. Automobiles are the second largest leading cause of unwanted CO2 emissions in the United States. Anything that you can do to cut down on automobile use will be of benefit.

7. Cut down on the amount of meat that you eat. Cows add a significant amount of methane gas into the air each year.

8. Turn off lights and electronic appliances whenever they are not in use.

9. Do not run your dishwasher or washing machine unless they are full. Make use of any economy settings your machine may have and use lower temperatures (especially for washing of your clothes).

10. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Be sure to make use of any recycling programs that are available within your community.
