The Global Youth Village: A Unique Summer Program

People use the word "global" a lot these days: global warming, global economy, global thinking. But what does it really mean to be a citizen of the global village?

We think it means values that people of all nations share: community responsibility, service, respect, justice, and security, just to name a few.

It means honing our skills and knowledge while helping our neighbors.

The Global Youth Village happens each summer in Bedford, Virginia. If you are age 13 - 18 and want to learn how to create change in your world: this is the place for you. If you are 21 and over, and have experience with leading young people: we could have a staff position for you.

Who We Are. What We Do. Why We Do It.

Call us dreamers. Call us idealists. Those of us who are the core staff (about 10) of Legacy International, the non-profit organization that conducts the Global Youth Village, like the term "practical idealists."

We believe that by working together, people can bring about an end to poverty and environmental degradation. That we humans can achieve security, peace, and understanding through cooperating with each other. Our commitment is to find practical, sustainable, and culturally-sensitive means for individuals and groups to promote peace, harmony, and economic and social development.

We're a small organization with a big vision. Our programs help people help themselves: person to person, face to face, hand to hand. We work directly with community members and organizations, helping them conceive agendas to address local needs, generate action plans, build coalitions with others, and gain the skills and tools needed to carry out their plans. We also teach them to teach others.

What happens? Teens in Indonesia organize community service projects in their home villages, raising funds for orphanages and conducting classes on environmental awareness. University professors design and implement the first ever classes on civic participation in Central Asia. Iraqi youths return home with hope, and a new inspiration for the future. Ukrainian women create their own non-profit organization to help disadvantaged women start their own businesses. U.S. youths learn how, step by step, to address the needs they see around them. Now they, too, are practical idealists.

We are teachers. We are artists. We are web masters. We are bookkeepers. We are also parents and families. We want a safer, more sustainable future for our children; and recognize that can't happen unless it happens for everyone's children.

Donate to the Global Youth Village Scholarship Fund.

Young people ages 13-18 are eligible to come to the Global Youth Village and learn how to make a difference in their home communities. To heal old wounds in conflict areas. To repair environmental damage. To help those less fortunate. Starting now, and throughout the rest of their lives.

They are from all races. All religions. All economic backgrounds. They come from all over the world and throughout the United States. At least 60% of them need a scholarship to be here. You can help create a better future by donating to the Scholarship Fund.

Legacy International is a 501(c)(3) organization. Visit our website for an annual report. Donations are tax-deductible.

The Global Youth Village brings together teenagers from the U.S. and more than 90 countries, and teaches them practical ways to create change in their world.

Tell Us What You Think About Young People Changing the World

In positive, constructive, inclusive, and humanitarian ways, of course.

There have been,..are,..will be young people changing the world, across time ages. Or at least, willing to change the world. And maybe sometimes, indeed changing the world! And thinking... oh God, what have I done? And that's great! This is Youth's gift! Pure mind's gift! This gift can change the world. But it's too short. So as Youth.
So... Young People, change the world and change it now! ( ...or as soon as possible.)

It's almost time for the Global Youth Village to convene! This year we have Iraqi teens coming to share their perspectives with U.S. teens. And a group of 17 teens from Indonesia will join in with the 3-week program in July. We're excited, and it's a great way to spend the summer.
