Gloria Steinem at a glance
Gloria Marie Steinem (born March 25, 1934) is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist.
Rising to national prominence as a feminist leader in 1969, Steinem was a columnist at New York magazine in the 1960s and broke ground in 1963 with an investigative report of how the women of Playboy were treated, which was made into a 1985 movie, A Bunnys Tale. In the 1970s she became a leading political leader and one of the most important heads of the second-wave feminism, the womens rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1971, Steinem, along with other feminist leaders (including Betty Friedan, Fannie Lou Hamer, Myrlie Evers, and U.S. Representatives Shirley Chisholm and Bella Abzug) founded the National Women's Political Caucus. An influential co-convener of the Caucus, she delivered her memorable "Address to the Women of America." The next year Steinem became the founding editor and publisher of Ms. magazine, which brought feminist issues to the forefront and became the movement's most influential publication.
Steinem actively campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment, in addition to other laws and social reforms that promoted equality including same-sex marriage. She also founded or co-founded many groups, including the Women's Action Alliance, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the Women's Media Center, and Choice USA, and she is also a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America.[http://news.google.ca/newspapers?id=ZVQNAAAAIBAJ&sjid=km4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2107,5223052&dq=democratic+socialists+of+america+democratic-socialists-of-america&hl=en]
Today, Steinem is considered, along with Betty Friedan, the most important feminist reformer of the Second-Wave of the Women's Movement in the United States.
Ms. Magazine at a glance
Ms. is an American feminist magazine co-founded by American feminist and activist Gloria Steinem and founding editor Letty Cottin Pogrebin[http://www.msmagazine.com/about.asp ] together with founding editors Patricia Carbine, Joanne Edgar, Nina Finkelstein, and Mary Peacock, that first appeared in 1971 as an insert in New York magazine. The first stand-alone issue appeared in January 1972 with funding from New York editor Clay Felker. From July 1972 to 1987, it appeared on a monthly basis. During its heyday in the 1970s it enjoyed great popularity, but was not always able to reconcile its ideological concerns with commercial considerations. Since 2001, the magazine has been published by the Feminist Majority Foundation, based in Los Angeles and Arlington, Virginia.

Steinem is at her polemical best in these six compelling essays--three of which are new, three revised from Ms. articles. She invents "Dr. Phyllis Freud," founder of psychoanalysis, who proved that men's lack of wombs make them terminally envious and whose theories serve as a semi-scientific rationale for men's lower status in a matriarchal society. An interview with women's weightlifting world champ Bev Francis leads Steinem to question assumptions of female weakness and male strength.
Another piece demystifies economics by interpreting it as a system of human values, with special reference to women's unpaid or underrated work. Elsewhere Steinem analyzes the growing feminization of poverty and masculinization of wealth, exposes advertisers' restrictive control over the editorial content of women's magazines and reflects on turning 60, an age, she finds, when women grow more radical and rebellious. Each essay is prefaced by an extensive introduction which Steinem uses as a platform to discuss sexual politics.

says:
I am hugely into conspiracy theories. There are some rumours going around that the rockefellers funded women's lib to get children into government run schools faster and to tax the women for working like they were taxing the men.
Gloria steinem herself has admitted to being a member of the CIA and having been given the responsibility of studying women to guage reactions and so on.
It sounds a little nuts, but I find it immensely interesting.
I wonder if I should start a conspiracy theory lens now.
