When I was at Disney World for the first time, my mother gave me a glow necklace. As a little kid, I was completely fascinated by the glow necklace. In fact, I was so busy admiring and playing with it that I completely ignored the fireworks!

What Makes Glow Sticks Glow?
What's going on inside that little plastic tube? What makes that pretty glow?The glow is made by a process called chemiluminescence--light produced by a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction excites atoms or molecules in such a way that they emit light. It's how fireflies make their own light.
A typical glow stick contains two liquid substances. The chemical reaction that creates the glow won't happen until those two substances are mixed together. So in reality, a glow stick has two containers: A very fragile inner container (usually a glass vial) holding one solution, and an outer container that holds another solution. When you bend the glow stick, the inner container snaps open, allowing the two chemicals to mix. The reaction is immediate: Bright fluorescent light!
