Easter Treats

Are they gluten free?

Easter is coming, and like most of the holidays, for people living on a gluten free diet, it's always a major concern finding the right foods and treats that can be eaten without causing illness. It's also a huge frustration for many parents of kids living on a gluten free diet, because so many things have to be done differently than for other kids on a "normal diet".

Most parents find themselves on the prowl for a decent Easter recipe that is fun AND tastes good. Easter bento boxes are the perfect solution to the problem. They're cute, fun, AND the treats can be contained and kept away from other foods that could possibly make someone living on a gluten free diet very sick.

To create the nests pictured above, simply use a gluten free no-bake cookie recipe, and press the cookies into greased muffin tins instead of spooning out into circles. When cooled, pop them out of the tins and fill with shredded coconut and gluten free jelly beans or other egg-resembling candies.

Shaped Food

Easter Is BETTER With Bento Boxes!

One of the fun things with bento is the animal shaped food in the box. Just think for a moment about all the fun animal shaped food and treats that pop up during Easter. A bento box can be filled with little chocolate bunnies, Marshmallow Peeps, and other Easter-themed candies. How about adding a little cup of chocolate Easter eggs? By doing that, half the work of creating the ensemble is already done!

Here's a little bonus, too...NO MORE of that horrible Easter grass all over the house! (Can you tell that I just HATE that stuff?!) Seriously, Easter grass may make a cute addition to Easter baskets, but it gets EVERYWHERE! If your kids are like mine at all, you're STILL finding bits and pieces of the stuff all the way into July!

Another little idea: Frost gluten free cupcakes with a thin layer of white or chocolate frosting. Then, top with colored coconut. Add a few jelly beans to the center. Take a coordinating colored pipe cleaner and cut it down to size to make a handle for your cupcake Easter basket!

If you have your heart set on Easter grass...

You can color shredded coconut with green food coloring and line individual compartments of the bento box with it before adding any other shaped foods.

Edible Easter grass! I think I can live with that!

Bread Baskets

for Easter bento boxes

bread basketFlip a fluted pan over so it's upside down. Wrap cookie or bread dough around each cup, then bake. When done, carefully remove each cup. Slip a pipe cleaner through the heated cup to create a handle, and VOILA! Edible Easter basket! Fill with savory or sweet treats, depending on the kind of dough used.

You could even use it to make personal-sized bread bowls for stews or dips!

Hm... Bento boxes are absolutely beautiful artworks that I couldn't eat because I just would want to keep them as they are and display them in the kitchen shelves!

However, and because I'm not skilled at all, I wouldn't be able to prepare such beautiful boxes :(
