Which Is The Better Email?

Hotmail from Microsoft and Gmail from Google are both highly popular free email services. Together with Yahoo! Mail they make up the top 3 webmail providers, each with hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

Web-based email has come a long way since the 90s; most services these days offer huge amounts of storage, smart spam filters, sorting messages in folders, and other goodies. However, there are still many differences in design, speed, and features.

This page is dedicated to a discussion about whether Gmail or Hotmail is the better email provider, and why. You are welcome to jump right into the discussion below, or scroll down to read more about Gmail versus Hotmail first.

Gmail is better!

belete says:

Yes et is

God says:

I cant even open hotmail, and it takes 24 hours to send 1 email gmail is alot faster and it can be your homepage when you press google chrome or internet explorer or firefox so hotmail is shit

George says:

Gmail is much nicer. Hotmail is ugly looking and runs slow and every account I make seems to get full with spam despite never even giving out my address. I get next to no spam on my Gmail account and it looks a lot nicer and feels more professional. Much easiers to use and faster and more responsive

E says:

All these poser that like hotmail only talk about how pretty it looks. Poor dumb people. Read a book and once your smart enough to understand why gmail is better, switch. By the time you read this your hotmail acct will have at least 10 span emails in it. LOL I have both. Mostly use gmail. Its amazing how many dumb people are out there. I love you guys....

Animosus says:

I used to use Hotmail, then i moved to gmail a few days ago, never looking back. It integrates with my phone extremely well. Its fast and clean aswell

Both says:

Gmail waaay better at stop spam from entering your gmail Period, BUT not user friendly and VERY sluggish. Hotmail really sucks at avoiding spam but it's user friendly and looks better. I use both but I rather use Gmail for serious mail accounts.

AVF281 says:

G-mail, and continuing to use it. I used to own a Hotmail account before, but the interface was disappointing.

Dee says:

If your Hotmail account has been hacked, Hotmail does not have my vote for better. I have lost all contacts and lots of photos I wanted to keep. I have tried everything to get access to my account and nothing works. So my vote will have to be Gmail. Plan on setting up account today.

fsda says:

dsaf

Bill Gates says:

today, gmail greatly exceeds hotmail. + interface + simplicity + powerful

I says:

If i know, why should i search??

hello says:

gmail

Joe says:

I want badly to use hotmail but its just too buggy. Windows live is too restrictive and its too hard to add emails to the account, especially if you already have that email in use. The interface hangs up, when you try to change calendar events you lose communication with the server. When you edit a calendar event the calendar will reset back to the current day even if your event was 2 months down the road. This is annoying if your going through your calendar to make changes.

Gmail is smooth and seemless. Never have any buggy issues or hangups.

Hotmail fix your bugs in your interface, make it easier to consolidate accounts and im yours. I want to support you.

davespeed says:

I have used both and get WAY less spam with gmail.

Hot mail User says:

Hotmail is buggy

Gmail Kumar says:

Hotmail is a hellish web email provider while Gmail is world's best

Oliver says:

Received an email to my Hotmail from a family member who was IN MY ADDRESS BOOK and had exchanged multiple emails with in the past. The email was informing me that a distant relative had died. Hotmail marked it as spam and denied us access to it. We only found out a year later in a very awkward conversation. We found the blocked email in the archives, but Hotmail absolutely refused to grant us access to it. Finally, using IMAP we managed to open it, and it was a harmless, genuine, plain-text email. I IMMEDIATELY switched everything over to Gmail for the whole family and have never looked back. Never had ANY problems with Gmail.

Gmail Fan says:

Gmail is more professional and has more services. One google account and you may use it for almost anything! Hotmail has too much spam and ads!

Zoey says:

I have had emails for a long time. I find that Gmail is WAY better. I get so much spam on Hotmail it is just unbarable when searching for emails for friends. It never ends up in the spam box! It's harder to use than gmail, and it really bugs me that you have to type in @hotmail.ca after your email address! with Gmail you just type in example123 or something then ur pass. It's really awesome! I'd recoment it to anybody who was knew to email.

Mauood says:

Fellow Controversial Opinionators,
Here is my say.

Gmail's first in being innovative and has its own way of organizing and compiling all your mail. It is outstanding in neatness, and without all those Ads its cleaner. It has some getting used to and might not be good for someone who doesn't like clicking a lot. I have used Hotmail for a little bit and decided that its unorganized, and its processing can't handle more than one application at a time, if you don't want it to lag (and who really does!). It's chat is a major advantage because IT has the upper hand. It is organized and easy to use and understand. In the end though, Gmail has an overall easy handle, functionable chat, loads of space, and crazy fast processor. Gmail wins.

***READ THIS: Steve Jobs had a huge hand in the new Gmail look. He came up with the design and the innovative layout. He was supposed to be the speaker for Gmail's New Look Press Conference in Ohio but he passed way too soon. I think that in commemoration to Steve we should all make a Gmail account by Dec 31st 2011. Use it or Not, please respect Steve Jobs. I hope you make it right after reading this.
Thank you.

Mathieu says:

Gmail has a cleaner interface and easier to use, yet more powerful.

Cem Akgun says:

Gmail, easier.

Anne says:

I have gmail and my friend has hotmail and 90% of the time her emails don't go through

Lisa says:

I am using G-mail. Very happy with all the options that I am not looking to make any changes. It is so easy to sort mail using labels and the markers can be colorized also. The span filter works great. In the several years I have used g-mail, not 1 non spam mail has been filtered out. Easy searching and never running out of space!

Rayw says:

G-Mail.
10X .. no 100X .. no .. 1000X more faster and easier to use!

Hotmail is better!

Jared says:

For all the Gmail nerds out there apparently you haven’t read their user license agreement otherwise you would think twice about registering an account. Google invades your privacy they track every search you make on Google and everywhere you go on Youtube and THE WEBSITES YOU VIST WHILE LOGED IN!! Then they take this information and sell it to other companies just so they can market to you and put ad’s beside your precious Gmail.

Jared says:

I use both Hotmail and Gmail therefore am not biased Gmail would be better if you’re in to a less complicated more basic email. I like how Gmail integrates your mobile devices and YouTube (considering Youtube is a Google product I would expect it to) better than Hotmail where as Hotmail integrates social media networks and I think the email viewer is better and more advanced.

Jared says:

Role says:

Hot mail is much simpler.

Sachin says:

Hotmail is clean & sleek

jade says:

i have both hotmail is wayyyyyy better, they are incompeteable. okay?

djgamer says:

hotmail is better because i don't really understand gmail that much, it is way to complicated

Yvette17 says:

I've been a faithful hotmail user since 2005, i say it pays to be so! Got no probs with it whatsoever. I've used gmail on the side for work/school purposes and its been hacked twice. Thinking of closing my google account because if this.

Landers03 says:

Hotmail is better as i use more Microsoft products, XBL etc.

Richard says:

I have both a Gmail account and a Hotmail account, and use them both daily. Hotmail is more user-friendly.

Daniel says:

I forgot to tell, the first thing I noticed when I switched from Gmail to Hotmail was the speed of the pages. Simply twice as fast.

Daniel says:

For a couple of reasons Hotmail works best for me.
- I use XboxLive and other services so I only need one account for all. The services I use of Google luckily don't require me to login (Earth, YouTube etc..)
- I find the interface for creating and managing e-mails and documents easier to use
- I have the feeling I have more privacy with Hotmail
- Hotmail provides a lot more free storage space

Dan says:

I can't figure out how to remove spam and junk from gmail. How do you do it? My wife has hotmail and it filters out all the junk.

tess says:

just because hotmail rocks ! you can store all your photos on skydrive !

Tomo says:

Hotmail wins in the amount of users, interface and most certainly security. I don't care what anybody says, just go learn the facts. Gmail's interface is just too ugly and much more confusing than hotmails.

Johnathan R. says:

Hotmail is better because first of all if you receive sale emails or others that arent marked as spam you can move it to the junk folder so Hotmail can recognize it better. I use to use Yahoo! and even Gmail at one time, but I've been with Hotmail for a good many years now, and it just seems to get better and better by the day. It's so easy to seperate my emails and it's very easy to use. Note: for those of you who put your opinion on here, please if you something for a fact say it not something fake. Example: (DavidLee says:
everyone uses gmail!

SysAdmin says:

Hotmail is the best- with righk-click support, Microsoft Smart Screen Antispam Filter, scheduled sweep and of course with Skydrive!!!!!!!!!!!

mmcd says:

I have always used both Gmail and Hotmail; however, at this given time, Hotmail wins for various reasons. With Hotmail, I am able to create an alternative e-mail address that I can easily delete in case I find spam (instead of making an actually brand new e-mail address. I am able to choose whether or not a sender is spam in the options, and I am able to converse with Yahoo users; on the other hand, I do find Gmails text-based ads to cause less clutter (but I pay for my hotmail address--so no ads).

nick says:

the hotmail of yesterday is not the hotmail of today. They have added Skydrive, which gives you free 25 gb of storage in the cloud. It is much faster, with a much better spam filter than Gmail. I switched to Hotmail because of the atrocious spam filter of Gmail. I kept getting spam in my inbox and legit emails in my spam folder!

binosystems says:

i manage 200 company account with both gmail and microsoft. i recive lots of complains that Gmail keep loosing emails, or sometime dont recive at all.

Rasheed says:

before i used hotmail.. but thing is i used skydriver I upload confidencial documents a lott and one day pop up temporary blocked i connot access my account and sky driver as well. then i used gmail its is very fast and highly secured from threats I really like tht hotmail sucks......

hotmail lover says:

had both, but I think hotmail is more colourful and user friendly
plus I had a bad memory of having back arrow key error with gmail in the past
I have no idea if they fixed it but it bothered me tons cause the page won't go back LOL

The guy who went on this site says:

HOTMAIIIIIL!

ariel says:

hotmail is more easy to use

Tyler says:

Hotmail is awesome!

Gmail

http://mail.google.comGmail is a free webmail service from Google that was launched on April 1, 2004. It currently has over 193 million monthly users. Gmail offers more than 7.5 GB storage space, and keeps increasing this number every day. It supports POP3 and IMAP protocols, which allows you to use your Gmail account with a desktop email client (such as Windows Mail). You can create unlimited filters and labels to sort your messages the way you want.

Gmail has a number of innovative features, such as the Conversation View which groups related messages together for more convenient viewing, or the Priority Inbox which puts more important emails at the top. Gmail Labs offer even more experimental features to further tweak the way your email works.

Gmail is currently integrated with all Google services, such as Blogger, Youtube, AdSense, AdWords, Docs, Buzz and others - you need an account to be able to use them.

Hotmail

www.hotmail.comWindows Live Hotmail is free webmail from Microsoft. It is currently the most popular web-based email provider in the world. Like other major free email services, Hotmail allows users to create multiple folders, use message filters, choose themes and access their inbox using a mobile phone. You can also setup your account to receive all your messages from POP3-enabled Gmail, Yahoo! or AOL inboxes in one place.

The new Ajax-based Hotmail interface is clean, fast and easy to use. The service has improved greatly since it was started back in 1996. Users can customize the look and feel of their inbox by choosing where to display the reading pane (or hiding it altogether), grouping messages by conversation or showing them individually, and using one-click filters.

Hotmail is integrated with Microsoft services like Windows Live Messenger, SkyDrive, Contacts, and Office Web Apps (allowing to open attached Office documents on the browser).

I used to have gmail when hotmail and yahoo have limited the size of the mailbox. I sticked on to Gmail for its simplicity. Over the years the gap among the three in terms of size has dropped and gmail became lot slower. Moved to Hotmail this year and have noticed new features put onto Hotmail. In fact i have auto fwded my gmail emails to hotmail and have not gotten back to gmail for the last 8 months or so. Loving hotmail!!

I moved to Gmail after being frustrated at Hotmail. I have not been to Hotmail since then.

I tried to set up an auto-reply email on Hotmail to let my friends know of the official change. However, Hotmail just wouldn't let me post that e-mail. I think it complained about the length. I tried rewording it and checking it's length, but Hotmail still wouldn't let me do it. Microsoft said this (the length checking) was a SPAM prevention measure. I thought, "They must really not be able to deal with SPAM if they have to resort to doing this."

    Hotmail is the best...
Actually I 've used both but Hotmail has got everything required. It hasreally fantastic features like:-
    Sweep
    Facebook integration
Chat with facebook friends without windows live messenger.
Best spam filtering (Gmail often mark some messages as spam even if they are not!)
    Simple and neat home page
    Chat with yahoo friends
    Easy navigation

    And for security concious people...
Best security against hackers (see the green Microsoft Corporation label near lock at the address bar)
Use and throw passcodes if you are not at home...
    AND Lots more...

Last night ,Jimmy Fallon joked, "Who uses Hotmail anymore?" Maybe it used to be played out, but is so much improved now that according to this article, it is #1 in the world. Who knew?. I left Hotmail several years ago for another provider, but I resumed it last year as my main email..The optional conversation feature is my favorite. My friends who prefer Gmail describe it as "cleaner," and I can see why, because it was created specifically for interface. The name itself is very cool and I have an account myself. However, Hotmail offers the same features and doesn't have that occasional delay you get with Gmail delivery. My major beef with Gmail is how it monitors your messages and produces ads within moments about the content you have just written. I realize that all email is monitored and Hotmail has ads too, but for me, Gmail is more intrusive.

I've used Hotmail for the longest time, but do use Gmail and Yahoo as well. Overall, I agree that Gmail is much more robust when compared to Hotmail, especially when it comes to filtering spam.
