Gmail vs Yahoo Mail

Which is the Best Webmail Provider?

Google and Yahoo are both huge internet companies which compete in a lot of areas, including free webmail service. When Gmail was launched back in 2004, lots of people moved to Google's new, convenient email platform. Yahoo! answered by redesigning their own e-mail system and offering more space and features than they did before.

Both companies offer great free email accounts now, but there still are many differences between the two (Google's labels versus Yahoo! Mail folders, vastly different interfaces and so on). Do you like Gmail or Yahoo! Mail more, or perhaps you need help deciding which one is better? Gmail is better!

Gmail. It's not only email, but task manager, docs, feed reader.... all in 1 single login ;). i'm used to it.

CamCam says:

Gmail is way better

Layney says:

I cannot see how anyone in their right mind could state that Yahoo is better than Gmail. In any way. I have both accounts and the only reason I still have Yahoo is because Yahoo wants me to pay them so I can transfer and forward my messages to Gmail. The only thing those leaches are better at is blackmail. But I don't blame them, I guess that's the only thing they can do to keep some of their users. Yahoo is the thing of the past, and we will all remember it dearly. -.-

priyanka_kaka says:

I've been using yahoo mail and gmail for 3 years. and i rarely open my yahoo mail account coz it's confusing and rather slow compare to gmail. gmail is more friendly for not so advance users and has simpler but attractive design too :)

Anon says:

Gmail blows away all the competitors in ease, efficiency, reliability and fun. I started off with hotmail -> yahoo --> aol and now I'm happy to use gmail forever.

Jon says:

Yahoo is for losers. You can't even set up automatic forward unless you pay and annual fee. Plus the ads and "news" blow. Gmail is for the hip.

jade says:

hotmail wins but out of these two(grrrrrrrrr) gmail, strangely wins

Matty Matt Matt says:

Yahoo used to be the king, and was for a long time. Best email. This includes when gmail first launched. I still use yahoo mail (i have multiple addresses), as well as aol's free webmail service (which isnt bad either, its equal to yahoo's new interface, but for yahoo i use classic interface. But with all of the recent developements, and google making all of these apps and integrating them (calender, tasks, google docs and all of that, i use Gmail for my main account, and yahoo and aim/aol mail for secondary. Gmail is currently the best free, well known webmail service available.

i use Gmail becuse google comes out with very good products. Yahoo E-mail accounts can get hacked easy. Its happened to me before.

Chadrew says:

I use both Gmail and Yahoo Mail, actually Yahoo is the one where I registered first (which was a while ago). So I can honestly compare the two since I've been using both for years. Here's why I think Gmail is superior:

1. When you open GMail it goes straight to your inbox. When you open Yahoo Mail, it shows a "news" landing page with some ads and stuff that I don't care about. You can't set it to go straight to inbox unless you're using the paid version.

2. Yahoo only allows up to 100 message filters, Google gives you unlimited filters... You might ask, who needs so many? But I just checked and I'm already using ~110 filters in my Gmail and sorting them to various labels :) It's an incredibly powerful tool that lets you detect messages by from/to address, subject, body, even lets you use "or" and "and" expressions.

3. Google only shows unobtrusive text ads, Yahoo shows graphical and often animated ads.

4. Yahoo's spam filter got a lot of better lately, but I still think Gmail's is far superior (getting lots of spam but over 99% gets detected and filtered nicely).

Yahoo! Mail is better!

Eric says:

I suppose it's just a matter of taste... I know that Gmail is certainly the MORE POPULAR of the 2 right now; The one that's more in vogue; The one that's considered "Cooler" (which, the older I get, just seems more & more frivolous a distinction). But for my dollar (and I'm aware there isn't one, as they are both free services), I'll take Yahoo any day. To me, the interface is clearer; more elegant, logical & robust. I like that it behaves like a standalone mail client, with tabs, folders, a preview pane, etc. Contrast this with Gmail, which looks like Design was never much of a consideration at all. To me, it just looks like plain text on a page; kinda like Craigslist (perhaps a SMIDGEN better-looking, but not much). I suppose if that appeals more to your aesthetic sensibility, then so be it, but to me Yahoo just LOOKS better. I consider its interface to be LIGHT YEARS ahead of Gmail. It is a very sophisticated product. Does it have its problems? Yes, of course. But they all do. People frequently complain about spam with Yahoo. This can be a problem, I suppose, but for me, problems with spam have more to do with how long that address has been in use, and HOW it's been used than anything else. If you've signed up for numerous newsletters, and used the address online a lot, then you’re going to get more spam. I’ll admit, every once in a while, a few spam messages manage to squeak by the Yahoo spam filter, but by marking those messages as spam & not simply deleting them, I’m helping Yahoo’s spam filter learn & better distinguish spam from legitimate messages. I had a Gmail account (had it from 2004, when they first came out, and finally killed it in March of this year, when Google changed their privacy policy) that was FILLED TO THE BRIM with spam! I'm talking something like 10,000 or more unread messages (it was a designated "Junk Mail" account - where I got all my purchase receipts & newsletters sent, so that I didn't have to have all that stuff directed to my primary account), and the spam just sort of took over. So spam can become an affliction regardless of which service you use.

BryanLSC says:

Still using Yahoo! Been using it for the past decade... Used to it...

David says:

Honestly, I have had both Gmail and Yahoo! but it seems like Gmail has a lot of options and freedom however privacy does raise a concern. Yahoo!'s layout, simplicity, and all together feel makes me more comfortable unlike Gmail.

hans says:

Have been using Yahoo mail for years now. Very unhappy since I cannot receive email from gmail users. Nobody seems to know a cure. For now i'll stick to Yahoo.

A.J. says:

Yahoo is functional and clear. Gmail just seems like a mess, with too much going on. don't like it. don't like it!

Rajat Tandon says:

yahoo yahoo yahoo..................

Sasidhar says:

Yahoo is better

Kidatply says:

I use Yahoo plus, 19.95 once a year well worth it. I also use gmail d/t my android phone. I like the fact that you can filter on either one. The reason i made yahoo plus my main email program deals with the disposable email addresses to avoid spam using a tool called Address Guard. I create disposable addresses, and if I want to stop the email to that I address si just delete it. I have one for just internet orders, one for my online bills, one for travel emails etc. True I could just use a label filter on gmail, but I am still giving out my primary email, or the one other email gmail allows you to have.

Jack2205 says:

I use Yahoo. I haven't tried Gmail yet.

moonlitta says:

Actually I don't know which is better, but I'm more used to my Yahoo mailbox; I don't mind the ads since I actually read lots of them and they provide me with some distraction and rest from doing things because I HAVE to.

About Gmail

http://mail.google.comGmail is a free e-mail service provided by Google since April 1, 2004. As of November 2010, it had over 193 million monthly users. Gmail offers over 7.5 GB inbox storage space, and keeps increasing this number every day. It supports POP3 and IMAP protocols and allows you to use your Gmail account with a desktop email client (such as Windows Mail). You can also create unlimited filters and labels to sort your messages the way you want.

Gmail has a number of innovative features, such as the Conversation View which groups related messages together for more convenient viewing, or the Priority Inbox which puts more important emails at the top. Gmail Labs offer even more experimental features to further tweak the way your email works.

Gmail is currently integrated with all Google services, such as Blogger, Youtube, AdSense, AdWords, Docs, Buzz and others - you need an account to be able to use them.

About Yahoo! Mail

http://mail.yahoo.com/Yahoo! has been offering a free webmail service since 1997. It had 273.1 million registered users as of November 2010, which makes it the second most popular web mail provider (the biggest one being Hotmail). Y! Mail went through numerous redesigns over the year. The current modern Ajax-based interface allows fast switching between email and Yahoo! Messenger, easy message sorting and quick access to popular applications.

Yahoo Mail is integrated with various Yahoo services, such as Pipes (probably the best RSS tool online), Avatars, Messenger, Calendar, Notepad, social bookmarking and others.

Yahoo also offers a paid webmail service called Mail Plus which currently costs $19.99 a year. It removes graphical adds, allows POP access and lets you create instant, disposable email addresses to avoid spam using a tool called AddressGuard.

To my mind, both Hotmail and Yahoo addresses are unprofessional - they're all right for exchanging emails between family and friends, but that's it. In fact, I'm bemused as to why Yahoo hasn't set up a different system that doesn't have 'yahoo' in the name - sorry, but that's a childish word to have in any email address, and no-one is going to take it (or the user) seriously.

Chadrew's post sums up why I like email, but there's one other quality that tackles Kidatply's justification for using Yahoo (which seems to show some confusion about how Gmail handles spam). Kidatply says:
"I have one for just internet orders, one for my online bills, one for travel emails etc. True I could just use a label filter on gmail, but I am still giving out my primary email, or the one other email gmail allows you to have."

Gmail allows you to set up as many email addresses as you like, and if you don't want to keep it, then just delete it. However, to avoid spam, it's far easier to just right-click on the spam message and just tell Gmail to mark it as spam, and then send everything that arrives from that address in future to the bin. Address Guard sounds a lot more fiddly to use, and even if it did work, it certainly wouldn't be worth paying 19.95 for something that Gmail provides free!

...you can create a Yahoo! email account that ends in "ymail.com" as opposed to "yahoo.com", for a more professional look to the email.

It's been like that for almost two years.
