An Introduction to What Makes gmarlett Tick and Other Stuff

Thanks for visiting my lensography Lens and hopefully I can add some order to the chaos!

I began my Squidoo-vian journey in April 2008, although I previously set-up a pretty pathetic first lens sometime in 2006 and promptly forgot about it for two years!

Anyway, now I'm totally hooked and loving every minute of it. I enjoy visiting other lenses and receiving visits, so don't be a stranger - life is too short.

More About gmarlett

A Maine transplant, I have lived in the New England region of the U. S. for approximately 30 years and in Maine for 23 years. I love the area for its recreational activities, history and spectacular beauty. It's great to have an ocean, mountains, forests and thousands of pristine lakes, all in close proximity

Having grown-up in a Midwestern State, I had supposed the world was "flat" and that the normal color of lakes was green and rivers brown. The horizons there were endless and the weather, too hot, too cold and too windy.

Professionally, I worked as a rehabilitation counselor for the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs and retired in 2005. I assisted disabled veterans in returning to work and employment following their military service and service-connected disablements. I began my career working with Vietnam Era Veterans and ended it working with veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan.

I am a U.S. Air Force veteran myself and served on active duty for 4 years, during the Vietnam Conflict. I spent 3 1/2 years of service in Germany, which was one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. Following military service, I returned to school and completed undergraduate and graduate studies and began my career with the V.A.

As you can probably see by looking at my lenses, I have a variety of interests, a few of which have begun to manifest themselves, thanks to Squidoo. I hope to add more to this mix in the future and perhaps branch-out even more into some new areas.

A Much Needed Update to the Squidoo-vian Adventure

The Lenses Just Keep Popping-up - Where Does the Time Go?

Right now I seem to have hit a lull in my creative capacity and I realize I have built a zillion more lenses - some good and perhaps some not so good. Anyway, I thought it would be a great time to add some more of my lenses to this lensography, to keep things somewhat organized and to share my world with the great Squidoo Community.

I really want to thank those who have left comments and feedback, as well as those who have emailed me. I really appreciate the networking and support that goes on within the Squidoo community. A truly great group of creative and inspirational people.

Some highlights since I built this lensography, I returned to regular employment with LL Bean during the holidays and had some very interesting conversations with people across the U.S. - hopefully you received your gifts by Christmas? I also managed to get summarily kicked out of Digg, permanently (I still have no clue why?) and I managed to piss-off Google with my Dogs in China lenses being too graphic (I took out some of the graphics). I understand that reality is a hard pill to swallow sometimes.

So, going forward, I wish everyone a happy and more prosperous 2009, we''ll see you later on the other end of it.

As far as lensography updates, I have added more dog and animal related lenses, a whole section of reptiles, some pop culture and music related lenses and some affiliate marketing related lenses (it would be nice to earn a little money on the side here). Thanks and enjoy!

I Love Dogs

My Dog Related Lenses

I am a big time animal lover from way back and grew-up with dogs and cats around. My parents raised collies when I was very young, and I had two of them as my special childhood guardians.

I've done some work as a volunteer at a local animal shelter and have adopted a variety of animals over the years. From horses to ferrets, we've had them all. Dogs have always held a special place for me, however.

My current rescue is Reuben, who's now 8 months old. Reuben is a Black and Tan Coon Hound Mix who came from the shelter as a puppy, of 4 mos.

gmarlett's Self Development and Human Potential Lenses

Make a Difference!

Because of my personal history, my training and my professional experience, I am committed to the positive personal and spiritual growth of all people. I hope to add even more lenses to support personal empowerment.

People are fascinating to me. I have always enjoyed psychology, sociology, anthropology, any of the sciences dealing with human functioning and behavior. I hope to expand my lens development in this area as well, going forward.

My desire to continue service to U.S. military veterans remains strong and I have developed a lens and blog to provide assistance. The trauma of combat for the individual, is lifelong and the costs of war for society are endless, regardless of the underlying politics.

gmarlett's Humor Related Lenses (The Drier the Better)

After all Laughter is the Best Medicine

I love humor and comedy, especially parody and satire. I grew-up reading Mad Magazine and graduated to the Harvard and National Lampoons and finally arrived at The Onion.

I love to laugh at the phoniness in politics, pop culture, science and religion, especially. If I didn't laugh, I would probably cry. For me humor and comedy has always been fun and a great stress reliever.

A person's ability to laugh at themselves has always been a positive sign of their mental health. So too, with society. I believe humor is a great weapon against oppression.

Visit to Wood Island Lighthouse Maine

July 5, 2008

This was a wonderful visit and tour of Wood Island Lighthouse, Sponsored and led by the "Friends of Wood Island Light." Summer fun on the Maine Coast.

Wood Island is one of the "haunted" Maine Lighthouses. It is difficult to impossible, to reach in any sort of bad weather. It is also a wildlife and bird sanctuary and is literally covered with poison ivy.
