What are Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Modified Foods and how do GMO Foods affect us?

GMO foods are genetically engineered or genetically modified foods. This is done in the laboratory by inserting foreign genes into the DNA of our food sources, whether they be animal or plant food sources.

Once altered in this way, the resulting foods are called "Genetically Modified Organisms". Personally, I'd like to think I'm eating food, not something that sounds like science fiction.

The sources for genes that can be inserted into the DNA of the things that we grow to eat, whether it be animal or crop, can include genes taken from insects, other animals, viruses, humans and bacteria. The idea is to alter the crop or animal to make it grow better, last longer, produce more, resist diseases, resist things that are in the soil that man has put their like certain pesticides, and you'll discover more as you read on.

Since it is not required to label foods that are genetically altered, education is necessary. In reality, it is hard to avoid ALL genetically altered food, but you can do the best you can to find foods that are GMO free, and I hope to help by providing you with information below.

“According to current guidelines, Organic food products can't contain GMOs”

Labels should say "Non-GMO" or "Organic"

Not required, but seek them out

Image from GMO Free Popcorn - click image for more informationThe FDA and government do not require that foods that contain GMOs label them as such, but since there is so much concern about this issue, many are voluntarily labeling their foods "GMO-Free" or "Non-GMO". I would be inclined to support such companies.

Look for indications as to whether the entire product is GMO-Free, or just an ingredient in the product. There are some ingredients that are more inclined to contain GMOs than others, for example corn and soy, so the manufacturers may just mention that the soy contained is GMO-Free...but what about the other ingredients? Become a label reader and add this to your list of things to look for.

When you search for GMO free food, you must read about each item carefully. Note that a food cannot pass organic standards if it is genetically modified or contains genetically modified organisms.

Most Common GMO Containing Foods Ingredients: Avoid unless organic

1. Corn and anything with any kind of corn in it

2. Soy and anything with any kind of soy in it

3. Cotton and Cottonseed Oil

4. Canola Oil aka Rapeseed Oil

5. Some beet sugars, watch your labels

6. Sugar - Suspect sugar that does not say 100% cane sugar

GMO-Free Fruits and Vegetables

Buy Local

It is generally agreed that, at least at present, most, but not all, of the fruits and vegetables grown in the United States are GMO-Free.

I am going to have to do a little research on our amazingly sweet Jersey Corn, it is so delicious! You should research your source of yellow and green squash as well (zucchini and crookneck), as some of it is known to be genetically modified.

About 50% of Hawaii's papayas are genetically modified. Remember, organic foods, a sampling of which follows for all ages, are not genetically modified.

GMO vs Non-GMO Meat Alternatives

Usually because of Soy

Since soy is on the list of foods that is highly likely to be genetically modified, and is commonly used as a meat substitute, products that contain it are more likely to contain GMOs.

If the following are not labeled as Organic, then they may contain GMO ingredients. VitaSoy soy milk is a brand that does not contain GMOs.

The Monsanto link to GMOs has become an important issue

Very EYE-OPENING Video, please view!

Consider this - Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, is making a lot of money genetically altering crops like corn and soybeans so that they are resistant to the very herbicides that they create, as well as adding pesticide genes to crops so that they are resistant to insects. I am explaining this to the best of my ability, please view the videos for further understanding.

This is NOT just a United States problem, it is and INTERNATIONAL problem as you'll see in the video below.

Here is one scenario explained briefly to make you think. Corn fields are planted with seeds from plants that are genetically altered by adding GMO's that are resistant to certain chemical herbicides...the products used to kill weeds. This would mean that herbicides could then be used to clear fields of weeds, but the genetically altered corn would not be affected and would continue to grow.

There are many health concerns related to the eating genetically modified foods...how can there not be? The following video is a must-see.

How to find GMO Free Fish, Eggs and Meat

When it comes to genetically modified meat, there are no approved GMO meats. Unless the animal has been fed genetically modified grains, which many have, the meat should generally be fine. You are safe if cattle and other animals bred for meat are grass-fed, such as Organic Prairie or Vital Choice brands. Remember, we are only focusing on GMO's here, there are other things to consider with meat, like whether antibiotics have been added to the feed and more, but our focus is on genetically modified foods.

Fish that is caught in the wild should be fine, farm-raised fish should be researched.

The following Eggs are among those that contain no GMOs:

Nest Fresh Organic
Organic Valley
Land o' Lakes Organic

Thanks for sharing. I know I'm always concerned when they start "helping" our health by trying to improve of nature.

Well as you know I am all over this issue! I cannot believe Monsanto is allowed to get away with this nonsense. I will be talking about it on Kate's show again on the 26th of July.
Thanks so much for helping to get the word out on this! I have a Tshirt about it on Zazzle too.

What a great resource for this information. I still am amazed at how many people don't really know what this is. It's another Road Trip for the SquidAngels. I stopped by to leave this Memorial Day Weekend blessing from a SquidAngel.

Awesome resource for GMO free food! It is scary, to say the least, what is "put" in our food - education is the key. Just wondering if you have had the chance to watch Food, Inc.? I have a lens on it if you would like to read about it.
  • GonnaFly May 22, 2011 @ 8:04 pm | delete
Yikes! What an eye opener. Even with my own vegetable garden I still buy lots from the supermarket. Must read those labels more carefully!

It is very important for us not to consume GMO products and to support the movement against them!Great lens!

I knew little or nothing about GMO's before reading this. I tend to eat a lot of soy, and really appreciated the Vitasoy suggestion. I will now be checking the labels to see if they are organic.
  • wordstock May 17, 2011 @ 10:31 am | delete
I have been concerned about this for a long time and there is a lot of information here that I will be reviewing. I just planted all my heirloom and organic seeds so I can control where my vegetables and herbs come from. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for doing this lens! I write a lot about this topic in my weekly newspaper column! (I had a blogger blog about it, but they locked it for no good reason.. ).. :)

I am surprised that our blog was locked...haven't seen it, but since blogger is owned by google and they are pretty earth-friendly, I would think it would be okay. If you get it working again, be sure to add links to the list above. Thanks for stopping by!

thanks for all this information - I find it all quite worrying really.
  • happynutritionist May 17, 2011 @ 9:45 am | delete
I have actually been more into learning about this than doing much about it so far, but am starting to think it's time to slowly replace foods we eat. One step at a time.
