A Big Green Monster to Help you Face Your Fears
Monster stories for Beginning Readers
The Big Green Monster helps children face their fears. Practice telling the monster when to come and when to go away. Snuggle with the Big Green Monster while listening to scary stories. Ask the Big Green Monster to guard the scary stories when you are not ready to listen to them.
Children love to hear the story of the Big Green Monster read to them over and over again. To give purpose to a new form of writing we pretend that the Big Green Monster is missing.
Children delight in the idea that the Big Green Monster has helped them so much in getting rid of their fears that he is now lost. We talk about how people make posters to help find their lost pets and then make posters to help find the Big Green Monster.
Children practice writing words, painting creatively to express an idea and think about ways to persuade others to action by making these posters.
The children hang posters all around the school. After lunch we find that the Big Green Monster was so scared that he hid .... We bring him out and everyone takes turns giving him a hug and then we read the story again.
"Go Away, Big Green Monster! And don't come back, ...
until I say so."

Children squeal with delight whenever I pull out Go Away, Big Green Monster! to read to them. They love to join in with the admonition Go Away, Big Green Monster! in the second half of the book as the monster disappears page by page.
Note: Though nearly all children love the intensity of the book, for a very few the monster is just too real.
