Let's Read: Go Away, Big Green Monster!

Go Away,Big Green Monster! is a book of cut out pages that page by page reveal a monster and then make it disappear. The simple cuts and the bold colors appeal to both young children and older artists and because of this is a delight to read to groups of children or individually. I have used Go Away, Big Green Monster! for story hour both in the US and in Costa Rica with children as young as 3 and as old as 8th grade with marvelous responses. There are always requests to Read it again!

In this lens we will explore the fears of young children. Stories like Go Away, Big Green Monster! can help children talk about their fears that by talking about it the fear goes away.

We will also look at the artistry of Go Away, Big Green Monster! , other art styles and cultures that use cutouts to express themselves and try making some art using this new technique.

Here comes the Big Green Monster! ....

Monster stories for Beginning Readers

Big Green Monster
Big Green Monster is Lost

The Big Green Monster helps children face their fears. Practice telling the monster when to come and when to go away. Snuggle with the Big Green Monster while listening to scary stories. Ask the Big Green Monster to guard the scary stories when you are not ready to listen to them.

Children love to hear the story of the Big Green Monster read to them over and over again. To give purpose to a new form of writing we pretend that the Big Green Monster is missing.

Children delight in the idea that the Big Green Monster has helped them so much in getting rid of their fears that he is now lost. We talk about how people make posters to help find their lost pets and then make posters to help find the Big Green Monster.

Children practice writing words, painting creatively to express an idea and think about ways to persuade others to action by making these posters.

The children hang posters all around the school. After lunch we find that the Big Green Monster was so scared that he hid .... We bring him out and everyone takes turns giving him a hug and then we read the story again.

They read Ed Emberly's book "Go Away Big Green Monster" and discussed the shapes Ed Emberly used to create his monster.

Then they distributed paper and cut out each piece according to the descriptions in the book.

Next time they might try reversing the order and have students create the monster before getting to see the book to see how differently they end up.

The Cut Through Art of the Cuna Indians of Panama

So what do Go Away, Big Green Monster and Molas have to do with eachother?

Each page in Go Away, Big Green Monster is a solid color with shapes for the various features of the monster's face cut out. Molas are made from layers of cloth with shapes cut out to reveal the colors of the layers underneath creating the patterns.

Similar to the way Ed Emberley uses cut out holes to show color through and thus a design, the Cuna Indians of Panama use a cut through technique to make colorful designs in their clothing.
