More and more people want to Go Green and that counts for gifts as well. This is the first of a series of earth friendly products that would make great gifts. This is a super gift for the eco-warrior in your life: a simple and easy way to recycle household waste and make it into rich, fertile compost. Not right there in the kitchen of course. Many people are put off composting because of the inconvenience of collecting waste. These attractive and odour free keepers are ideal for any eco conscious person.

I hate waste and when I moved into a small house without a garden I thought my composting days were over. Not so. I was given a counter compost container last year for Christmas and into this I put all my raw kitchen vegetable waste. It has a charcoal filter so there are no odours and I take the bag of waste to a friend's compost heap when it is full.

Compost is simply organic or living matter that has been allowed to decompose. Bacteria, fungi and worms break-down the waste and this results in a rich soil replacement. It is generally very rich in nutrients and makes excellent use in gardens and in containers. It will enrich your soil and is ideal for potting plants.

To make compost you need to stock-pile your organic waste to give it time to decompose. Where you have space you can create a compost pile fairly inexpensively or you can invest in a purpose-made container.

egg shells - crushed (these actually help to keep odours down too)

tea leaves
tea bags
paper kitchen towels and napkins
hair from your hairbrush
hair from your pets
dust from your vacuum cleaner

Do not put in citris fruit, its peel or seeds
Do not put in envelopes because of the glue in them
Do not put in any cooked food
Nothing inorganic
