Meet our Travelling Companions.

G'day! First of all my wife (Jane) and I (Trevor) would like you to meet our travelling companions: Angus is the one on the left and 'you know who' (Ellieboy) is on the right. What has this to do with our lens? Nothing really, except they are really good at playing 'eye-spy' when travelling through uninteresting countryside. I say really good, except Ellieboy cheats a bit. His worst was: "Eye spy, with my little eye, something beginning with FWC." "Inside or outside the Campervan" we asked. "Outside" was his reply. We gave in after a while. It turned out to be Fluffy White Clouds.

Apart from our love of cute stuffed toys, we are passionate about two things:
1. Australia as a fantastic holiday destination, and
2. RV's, Campervans and Motorhomes as being a great way to see the length and breadth of this stunningly beautiful Country

Through this lens, we would like to take you around Australia on the 11 most popular tourist routes, adding a place a day (or at least we will try to). At the same time we will give you information on RV's, Campervans and Motorhomes, including why you should hire one for your next holiday or vacation down-under

Let's start with our favourite area of Australia, from Byron Bay, on the far north coast of New South Wales up to Noosa on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Brisbane

Starting in Brisbane

Brisbane is the starting point for this highly recommended touring holiday. You can pick your Campervan or Motorhome from the supplier's depot, all of which are located close to Brisbane Airport.

Brisbane is Australia's third largest and fastest growing city. Over the past decade, there has been a huge increase in migration from the southern States. People are moving to south-east Queensland because of the ideal, all-year-round climate and relaxed lifestyle

Taking into consideration the climate; fantastic beaches on the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast; world class attractions such as Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo; the famous beach side resort towns of Byron Bay and Noosa; and the World Heritage listed Fraser Island; this is why we rate this region as our favourite in Australia for an RV, Campervan or Motorhome, holiday.

Brisbane is often referred to as 'The River City', as it is build around the meandering Brisbane River. Over recent years, many new buildings have been constructed giving the city a modern look. It is a youthful city, as many overseas students study and live in or close to the city. The most enjoyable way to get around is by 'Rivercat'. One of Brisbane's main attractions is 'Southbank' with its huge man made beach and lagoon; restaurants, cafes, pubs, shopping, and great markets on the weekends.

Tip Our recommendation is that you spend a maximum of 2 days in Brisbane and only pick up your Campervan when you are ready to go touring. You could stay, for 2 nights in a hotel in the City or across the river at South Bank. Everything is within easy walking distance or Rivercat rides.

Tip RV, Campervan, Motorhome. With this type of holiday, the Campervan becomes your home away from home and you only have to unpack once.

Great range of RV's, Campervans & Motorhomes to hire, from Budget to Luxury.

Brisbane to The Gold Coast

Day 1. Travel from Brisbane to The Gold Coast.

Excited? Well you should be, because this is the start of wonderful touring holiday of Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland.

Peak hour traffic is pretty bad in Brisbane, so we recommend that you arrange to pick your vehicle at 8am. It takes about an hour to do the paperwork and to undertake a familiarity inspection of the vehicle. From the various suppliers' depots, you have easy access to the Gateway Bridge and motorway south.
Tip Do NOT drive through Brisbane City.

The trip down to the Gold Coast will take about 1hr 15min, if you stick to the speed limit, and we recommend you do, as there are plenty of police with radar on the motorway. There is not a lot to see until you reach Southport (northern end of the Gold Coast)

The Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise are World famous, mainly due to the magnificent golden sand beach that stretches 65 km from Southport to Coolangattal. Any wonder that the Gold Coast is Australia's number 1 tourist attraction.

Just before you reach Southport, and if you like theme parks (especially of interest for the kids), you could stop at Movieworld, Dreamworld or Seaworld (at Southport). All three are very popular tourist attractions.

For a special lunch on day 1, you could go to Tedder Avenue at Main Beach. It is famous for being the culinary centre of the Gold Coast with many fine restaurants.

After lunch, you could also go to Q1's observation deck for spectacular views over the Gold Coast and/or do some shopping in Surfers Paradise.

We recommend that you spend the night at the southern end of Gold Coast around Coolangatta. It's less hectic down that end of coast and the beaches are amongst the best in Australia. If you are a surfboard rider, then Currumbin is excellent. Just for lying around on beautiful golden beaches and having a swim, you can't go past Kirra, Coolangatta and Greenmount Beaches.

Tip With an RV, Campervan or Mortorhome, the standard of accommodation is consistent throughout your trip. You choose the standard of vehicle before you leave.

Great range of RV's, Campervans & Motorhomes to hire, from Budget to Luxury.

Day 2. Travel from Gold Coast to Byron Bay - Day 3. Stay Byron Bay.

Spend the morning on Gold Coast having relaxed breakfast; a walk along the beach; a swim. Before lunch head off down the coast via Kingscliff and Potsville.Mooball. Mooball is a quaint little town with a 'Cow' theme. Even the telegraph poles are painted with a black & white cow hide pattern.

If you can moove after that burger, travel on to Byron Bay. What a contrast from the Gold Coast! travelling down into New South Wales to Byron Bay. Take away the high-rise; take away the 'hustle & bustle'; but keep the magnificent beaches. You know you are on holidays as soon as you drive into Byron. This 'laid-back' town is an eclectic mix of 'the rich', backpackers from all parts of the world; mums, dads and families, all soaking up the sun and Byron Bay's atmosphere. The lighthouse is a great place to visit and perhaps get a glimpse of migrating whales.

To get a taste of Byron's atmosphere, you must have a pre-dinner drink at Byron Bay's Beach Hotel. (Be mindful of the drink & drive laws in Australia.) If you are going to eat-out, then Byron is the place, with a fantastic choice of restaurants and cuisines.

Tomorrow we travel inland to Bangalow and Mt Warning National Park, and then north to Lamington National Park, one of Australia's most magnificent.

Day 4. Travel from Byron B to Lamington NP - Day 5. Stay Lamington NP.

Having spent all day yesterday relaxing on the beach, you will need to get up early as there are a lot of places to see on day 4. Inland from Byron, in the hinterland, is the quaint historic village of Bangalow. With its colonial architecture and heritage shop fronts, the town is a popular place for its restaurants, cafes, crafts, arts and galleries. Perhaps you could have breakfast in Bangalow, or at least coffee before exploring the town. If your schedule coincides with the 4th Sunday in the month, then the markets are very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Heading north and down off the range, are magnificent views from Byron to the Queensland border. This is picturesque country with views of Mt Warning, over the Tweed River and fields of sugar cane. Keep heading north to Murwillumbah and then a short drive south west is Mt Warning National Park. This is a nice place to stop for a bushwalk and picnic lunch.

If you are adventurous and fit, you can get up very early and climb Mt Warning to see the sun rise. Mt Warning is the first place in Australia to be lit by the rising sun, as it is the furthest point east. If you are considering undertaking this climb, then you should research it on Google first, so you are aware of the fantastic views from the summit, but also understand the degree of difficulty of the climb.

From Mt Warning and back through Murwillumbah, head north, back into Queensland, and up into the Gold Coast Hinterland and the World Heritage listed Lamington National Park. compromising 20,600 hectares of protected flora and fauna. It is a privilege to be able to experience such preserved areas as this. Bushwalking along the many tracks in the Park, through sub-tropical rainforests, is a wonderful experience. Lamington has it all for the nature lover: an incredible variety of wildlife, exotic plants, spectacular scenery, waterfalls, fresh air and tranquillity.
Spend the night and the next at Binna Burra Lodge's Rainforest Campsite. (Must book in advance as there are a limited number of sites.)

Mt Tamborine to Maleny

Day 6. Travel from Lamington National Park to Maleny

Plan to leave Binna Burra early as it is a longer drive on day 6, travelling north through Brisbane and up into the Sunshine Coast hinterland to Maleny. (approx. 220km - allow 3.5 - 4 hrs plus stops)

Just north of Lamington National Park is Mt Tamborine. You will feel on-top-of-the-world as you drive along the Mt Tamborine escarpment. The western side is a favourite spot for hang gliders and the views are breathtaking. Tamborine village is well worth stopping at for breakfast, coffee and a browse through the arts and crafts shops. On the eastern escarpment are the most amazing views of the Gold Coast. (Care must be taken coming down off Mt Tamborine. It's very steep and you should obey the signs and use low gears. Take it easy!)

From Mt Tamborine, you can travel to Brisbane, inland via Beaudesert (nice country drive) or back via Coomera where Movieworld and Dreamworld are located, in case you missed them on the way down to the Gold Coast on day 1. Travel north past Brisbane up to Landsborough and then up the Blackall Range to Malaney.

Maleny & Montville, are major tourist towns in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Both are famous for their arts, crafts, cafes and restaurants; and a great place to try the local produce. From his deli cafe in Maleny, Colin James' award winning ice cream is divine and the wasabi cheese, from the Maleny Cheese Factory, is delicious. The views from the Blackall Range are superb, especially to the south of Maleny, over the remarkable volcanic plugs that comprise the Glass House Mountains.

This is a fantastic site. Australia is such a huge country, so it's great to have the hard work done for you. I would love to travel around Australia, using this as a guide. I'll definitely be referring this to family and friends...especially those travelling here from overseas.
