Go Green Homemade Household Cleaning Products

Ranked #1,711 in Healthy Living, #35,836 overall

Make your own Green Clean products with ordinary household items!

These Green Cleaning recipes are culled from many sources, while some include my trial and error tweaks. I have not used or tested every one of these yet, but I'm on my way.

Many of these safe green clean recipes include everyday pantry staples you already have in your home. Vinegar and baking soda are completely safe and have many household uses. If you haven't tried green cleaning, these are the easiest, and cheapest ingredients to start you on this ecologically friendly conversion. Try the window and glass cleaning formula to get started.

Important NOTE: If you are using up your store bought brands before converting to Green, save those containers and spray bottles. Most can be disassembled and run through the dishwasher, but I recommend air drying just in case.

Baking Soda

A reference guide for many uses

Baking Soda: Over 500 Fabulous, Fun, and Frugal Uses You've Probably Never Thought Of (Lansky, Vicki)

Amazon Price: $5.38 (as of 02/11/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $9.95

This is not simply a useful and informative book about the innumerable uses for good old baking soda, saving tons of money, and in the process not harming the environment. It is also entertaining and sometimes downright funny--it would be a great gift for anyone, including yourself. I expect that Vicki Lansky had a blast putting this book together, and her enthusiasm is evident in the text. -- Amazon.com Review

Green Clean - Surfaces

~ Furniture Polish ~
1 c. olive oil
1/2 c. lemon juice

Mix in spray bottle.
Shake well and spray small amount onto cleaning cloth. Polish until no residue remains.

NOT recommended for floors- very slippery.

~ Cleaning Wipes ~
*See note below for Greener Version.
Use a round plastic container, drill hole in lid about 1/2 inch, get an extra large roll of good paper towels cut in half to make two small rolls (leave plastic covering on while doing this, electric knife works best)! Place one of the small rolls in plastic container. Save the other as a refill or make both.

Cleaning Wipes Cleaning solutions

~ General Surface Cleaning ~
1 1/2 cups white vinegar
1 1/2 cups water

~ Window and Glass Cleaning ~
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
2 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon white vinegar

Pour one solution on top of the roll in the container. Place lid on container, allow paper towels to absorb the solution for 4 hours to overnight. Open storage container and take out the wet cardboard tube from the center of the paper towel roll and toss. Now thread the inside of the paper towel roll where the card board was through the hole in the lid and close lid. After awhile paper towels may dry out, if so add more of the solution and let sit overnight before using again!
*Greener Version: Use Washed Rags cut into squares. Accordion fold to use container as above. Launder after use and return to container.

~ Window and Glass Cleaner ~
Fill a spray bottle with:
3 tbs. Ammonia
1 tbs Vinegar
Cool water

Wipe clean and polish to get that nice clear shiny appearance.

My Tweak: Add 1 squirt dish washing liquid and 1-2 food coloring. I use green since this was my first homemade cleaner. :)

~ Glass Cleaner - Unscented ~
Would you believe CLUB SODA! If the smell of vinegar or ammonia gets to you use either flat or fresh club soda. Reported to work well at getting your glass and windows sparkling clean, and it's a cheap and easy option. Just pour into a spray bottle. Use as you would any glass cleaner.
*If you are using both options, I suggest color coding with a 1-2 drops of a different food coloring.

Thoroughly rinse with hot water.

My favorite Green Mantra

Green Clean - Kitchen

Modifications and substitutes will follow the original formula

~ Drain Cleaner ~
Volcano Drain Cleaner and Freshener (The kids love this one)
Run water until hot. Turn off.
Pour 1 cup baking soda into drain.
Pour in 1/2 cup of Vinegar.
Let bubble and sit for 10 minutes.
Pour in 1/4 cup Vinegar again. It will bubble again.
Thoroughly rinse with hot water.

~ Fresheners for Home and Drains ~
Quarter any citrus fruit and add water into pan. Simmer on stove top for at least 1 hour adding water if needed. When slightly cooled, pour slowly down drain.
*My Holiday Favorite involves oranges or apples, and GROUND spices: cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.

~ Fresheners for Garbage Disposals ~
Any citrus-Lemons/Limes cut into quarters. Oranges cut into eighths. Feed 1 into disposal. Refrigerate remaining slices for future use.
I've recently starting freezing lemon wedges. If ice cubes can help sharpen disposal blades, why not frozen citrus? Works great and still smells WONDERFUL!

~ Cleaning your Cleaning Tools ~ :)
Most sponges, kitchen and scrub brushes can be washed in your dishwasher with your next load. Place on top rack. Air drying a load with sponges is recommended, or remove prior to drying cycle.

Green Up Your Cleanup is a timely handbook of advice and cleanser "recipes" that explains how to eliminate toxic-chemical household cleaning agents from your life and replace them with natural, and often homemade solutions. Inspired by the author's experience as a mother of an allergic child, the book includes anecdotal information that led her to natural cleaning solutions and has "green facts," "smart tips," and informational sidebars generously sprinkled throughout the text.

The book is divided into three parts, "The Basics," "Inside Jobs," and "Dirty Jobs," and covers everything from green-cleaning the kitchen to green-cleaning the car. A handy size and a spiral binding make it easy to keep on hand as a reference as you do the chores.

Green Clean Laundry

CLEAN CLOTHES, DIY-STYLE Published in Kiwi by Linda Mason Hunter - A pioneer in the green living/healthy home movement and coauthor (with Mikki Halpin) of Green Clean.

- Fabric Softener -
Add ¼ cup of baking soda-which also works as a brightener-to the wash. When using liquid detergent, add the baking soda during the wash cycle; when using powder, add the baking soda during the rinse cycle.

- Whiten & Brighten -
Pour 1 cup of lemon juice in a bucket half full of water and soak clothes overnight. Or add ¼ to 1 cup of washing soda (a more powerful form of baking soda) to each laundry load during the wash cycle.

- Fragrance -
If you want to add fragrance, do so during the drying cycle. Put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton cloth, and toss it into the dryer with wet clothes.

- Treat Grease Stains -
For best results, treat stains while they're fresh. Cover the oily spot with a mixture of Borax and warm water and let it sit-20 minutes for a light, fresh stain, and two hours for a heavy, set stain-then rinse with cold water.

- Remove Perspiration Odors and Stains #1-
Spray full-strength distilled white vinegar on underarms and collars of shirts before washing.

NEW ~ Info from Other Sources and my own trial and error ~

- Remove Perspiration Odors and Stains #2-
Wet those perspiration stains with lemon juice, then sprinkle with salt and rub. If it's a hardy stain, hang the garment outside on a sunny day and let it dry in the sun. Then wash.
