Great Goa Budget Vacation ideas
Goa is Wonderful
I think that a Goa Budget Vacation is one of travel's best deals.
Goa offers so much - some of the BEST beaches in the world, friendly people, palm trees, elephants,Portuguese Churches, Temples and Super Wildlife. All at Budget prices. You can also buy apartments or villas fairly cheaply (well cheap by European/American standard) or maybe even a retirement home.
I didn't like Goa - till I got there !
I had the impression of a tacky version of Ibiza - I was SO Wrong !
It's a lovely vacation destination and safer than most !

Well -yes and No !
Goa has upgraded its tourism image and is solidly after more upmarket visitors.
There are now Holiday Inns and other chain hotels where you will get superb service and accomodation at much less than 1/2 European prices. Its still possible though to rent beach side cottages at low prices but these may not have European facilities - like indoor toilets, electricity or running water.
They may also be an interesting introduction to local wildlife ! But they ARE cheap ..
There is little in the World more relaxing than lying on a Goan beach near a beach bar reading your favourite book and listening to your favourite usic - and then wandering to the beach bar for a fish lunch or dinner.
Why not rent an apartment or studio ?
Be careful about buying an apartment or house in Goa though - the land laws are unusual and you may not actually be buying from the property owner !
It is essential to hire a reputable local lawyer (not one recommended by the estate agent ..)
Anyway you can always go Back - can't you ?
Do figure out the running costs including airfares if you decide to purchase a holiday home or retiirement home in Goa
You may well see elephants at work or in a temple, monks walking around or vendors on the beaches (they can get a bit tiresome)
I suggest taking taxis rather than renting a car - Goa Police are notorious for 'fining' tourists in rented cars - and NEVER do drugs in Goa or you will end up in Jail .
Books on Goa
I always take at least TWO guidebooks
The Rough Guides and Lonely Planet guides are about the best (and most recent) guidebooks but there are other great guidebooks too.
The Rough Guide to Goa 6 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Goa is India's best-known resort region. This guidebook also has a 16-page, section showing many of Goa's highlights. Goa is especially noted for its beaches and this book describes each one beautifully.
There is also a description of places to stay - from remote fishing villages to luxury resorts, and a description of Goa's markets, temples waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries This guidebook goes further than most and also includes Mumbai. and Karnataka. I do urge you to also visit Karnakata too -including the ruined city of Hampi and the seaside pilgrimage site of Gokarn.
The reviews of some of the best places to stay, eat, drink and party are excellent with maps and plans for every region.
Just one hint from me though - lay off the Fenni - its a deceptive and very strong drink and produces horrific hangovers !
Goa Travel Pack (Globetrotter Travel Packs)
A very good guidebook with sound suggestions on where to tour, stay, eat, shop and relax.
Lonely Planet Goa (Lonely Planet Goa, 2nd ed)
Covers everything you would need from Lazing on palm-fringed beaches, Anjuna and other markets, touring the superb Portuguese churches or birdwatching in the abundant birdlife sanctuaries. - A slightly more eclectic guide but full of really good information.
Its got over 20 detailed maps and a colour state map
where to find the party scene as well as the quiet beach spots
A full colour bird-watching section (which you will need to identify some of the fabulous birdlife)
There are suggested excursions beyond Goa, including Gokarna and Hampi (don't miss HAMPI - and take a bottle of mineral water )
There is also information on getting to Goa from Mumbai (Bombay)and Chennai (Madras)
You will find the useful words and phrases in Hindi and Konkani languages - don't assume everyone in Goa speaks English ..they don't !
