Goal Planning Software: Why should you write down your goal?
Ranked #2,694 in How-To, #29,075 overall
Why do you set a goal?
You see, goal setting is an intellectual process wherein you use your imagination. But oftentimes you commit the mistake of using your reasoning instead of using your imagination.
The following are the mistakes you often commit when you set your goals:
First, you set your goals based on what you already know.
Because of fear of failure, you tend to stay inside your comfort zone so you set your goals based on what you think you can do. You don't want to step outside your comfort zone. The result? You will not be willing to pay the price. You will not do what it takes to achieve it.
Second, you begin to question whether or not you are worthy of the goal.
This is wrong!
You don't question whether or not you are worthy of the goal. Instead, you question whether the goal is worthy of YOU. Why? Because you're trading your life with it.
And third, if you don't know how, you surrender and you go back down to your comfort zone... down to what you already know. And you settle.
Bear in mind, goal setting is an intellectual process. You use your imagination and not your reasoning. Your focus should be on what you want.
So when you set your goals, go deep down inside of you and find out: WHAT IS IT THAT I REALLY WANT? What is it that I want to be doing?
Deep inside of you is an unexpressed possibility that is seeking expression. That my friend, is what you really want. The first step in realizing it is by claiming it.
Why should you write down your goal?
You know why? Two reasons:
First, an unwritten goal will not always be in your conscious mind.
Second, your mental picture of your goal is very vague.
All day long you run around doing your work. There are sometimes a dozen of things to be done. Because you don't write down your goals, you could easily be distracted that you tend to do things that will not bring you closer to realizing them.
Real live things get our attention.
So, write down your goals on a sheet of paper. Read them daily until they will be picked up by your subconscious mind, which will help you do things that will bring you closer to the realization of your goals.
You do this, and you will belong to the top 3% of the population who write down their goals.
How do you formulate your goals?
1. A goal must be positively formulated.
You DON'T say: I want to quit smoking. You SAY: I want to live healthy.
2. You must be able to have a mental picture of it.
It is already good that you say "I want to live a healthy life." But to be able to see it mentally, you should say "I want to play football with my son." This way you make it specific and you can have a clear mental picture of it.Have a picture of it and paste it near that goal. It will help you stay focused on your goal.
3. A goal must be emotionally attractive to you.
It must be something you really want to reach.
This is all about motivation. If you set something as a goal where you don't have an emotional attachment with, it will be impossible to realize it. So listen to your inner voice. Do you really, really want it?? 4. A goal must be ecological.
When you set a goal, see to it that it doesn't hurt yourself or others. You can't just say for example, that you want to go on a tour around the world when you know that your partner can't leave his or her job, has to take care of the children, and has a sick parent to look after. You goal may not harm your family and loved ones. Also, take our nature into consideration. Your goal may not harm our nature as well.
5. A goal must be measurable.
You should be able to know when you have reached your goal. If, for example, your goal is to play football with your son, you make it measurable by saying, "I want to play football with my son for 30 minutes a day". If, after playing for 20 minutes you stop because you're out of breath or because you still have work to do, then you know that your goal which is playing 30 minutes hasn't been realized.
6. A goal must have a deadline.
Set a time limit to your goal. By doing this, you will stay focused and you will do everything that will propel you towards its realization.
You DON'T say: I want to have my driver's license.
You SAY: I want to have my driver's license in March, 2009.
Good news for extremely busy people
Being an owner of a company, my very busy schedule sometimes makes it impossible for me to stay seriously focused on my goals. Oftentimes I am swamped with at least a dozen of tasks that at some point I don't know anymore where to start! Sounds familiar to you?But seek and thou shalt find! ;-)
I have found something that is so helpful to me:
Time Management!
The thing is, when you set a goal, you don't just let it lie around waiting for miracles to happen. Instead, you make a plan of action and you work and act it out until your goal is realized. But sometimes your daily works and obligations hinder you from doing this. That's why you need a skill which will help you organize your day in such a way that you will be able to do your tasks and stay focused on your goal as well.
Learning about the skill of managing my time has helped me a lot. I now can go about my daily tasks without any stress and I carry on with my goals till they are realized. Other than reading, Time Management has become a passion of mine. Without it I'm lost!
