Goal Setting Creates Life's Blueprint

WHY ARE GOALS IMPORTANT?

Let's think about this for a minute - do we really need goals? If you decided to build a house or have it built for you, would you immediately go to the building supply store buy some lumber, some nifty power tools, and start hammering? Of course you wouldn't. You would do some research, make plans, have a blueprint drawn and that would be your starting point. While a home is certainly important, your life has even more significance. You are going to make a blueprint for your life. Spending time and energy on this "blueprint for life" will be a key to your success, happiness, and, by the way, to that house you want to build!

What career path have you chosen? Once you have set a goal for the career you want (long term goal), you will need to do some research (short term goals). Is this a career field that has a high probability for an actual job? Where are the jobs for this career geographically located? What about the education requirements? If you have the right degree, you can begin setting short term goals that will ultimately lead to a job. Otherwise, you have another long term goal to consider - the right degree.

As you think about what you want for every area of your life, not just the career, the importance of goal setting becomes apparent. Having long term and short term goals in every area of your life will help you focus on your "blueprint for life". Having a written plan with established goals will keep you organized. Because there are circumstances outside our control, be flexible with your goals.

Having goals and a written plan, your "life's blueprint", will be invaluable in creating a vision in your mind that becomes more real as you continuously visualize the attainment of that goal. If this were the house you were building, you would be able to picture the completed house in your mind. So it is with your "life's blueprint" - your goals!

It is also important that you break down short term goals into achievable pieces of the big picture. This step will provide small successes on the way to the larger goal; this will generate self-confidence and motivation - more reasons for establishing goals.

SETTING LONG TERM GOALS

type=text

Long term goals are those objectives that will take several months or years to achieve. Just as the blueprint for your house outlines and defines the complete project, the "big picture" or ultimate goal for your "life's blueprint" may be, for example, happiness and success. So, how do you plan to be happy and successful? You need long term goals. You are ready to establish the categories necessary for your ultimate goal. The categories for your "life's blueprint" (or rooms in your house) may be: education, career, financial, personal development, social, love, family. These categories will be different for each individual because your starting point is different. You may already have a degree and a marriage. You may just be starting your life's adventure. So, give this some serious thought and select categories that are relevant to your life. During this process, be sure the long term goals are truly the things you want for your life. Do you have a real passion and commitment for these goals? Are you willing to attend college for six years to get the degree you need to enter the career field established as a long term goal? Your passion for a goal will increase the motivation to achieve it. In the example above, we now have seven categories for this blueprint (or seven rooms for the house).

At this point, with your specific goals outlined, you need to prioritize your goals. This step will keep you organized and focused. If you are just starting to think about long term goals, you wouldn't put your ultimate career goal ahead of your degree because you may need the degree to enter that specific career field. Also, be sure that your goals are compatible. In other words, if your career goal is to become a social worker helping teens, your financial goal of a $20,000 monthly salary would make no sense. That salary level is not compatible with that career goal.

SHORT TERM GOALS ARE THE STEPS TO LONG TERM GOALS

type=text

Short term goals can be accomplished within a few weeks or several months. These short term goals are the steps necessary to reach long term goals. Once you have prioritized the long term goals, you are ready to examine each category (long term goal) and determine the steps necessary to reach that goal. These steps are the short term goals. For example, if the long term goal for education is a PhD, your short term goals may look like this: complete Associates Degree in two years, complete Bachelors Degree in four years, complete Masters Degree in six years, and finally, complete PhD in eight years. You can see the natural progression of the short term goals to reach the final destination - the long term goal.

After each long term goal has been broken down into short term goals, the next task is a careful review of each short term goal. You can then determine the steps needed within each short term goal; these steps could be called "shorter term goals". For example, using the education scenario above, you can first determine goals for the Associate Degree. These steps might include selecting the college, enrolling for classes and maintaining a certain grade point average. Again, this process will keep you organized and focused.

    It's funny... I live to set goals, my husband is the complete opposite. He loves to let things happen. Drives me nuts, but it works for him!! lol.

    One of the problems I have had in the past was not having an effective system for setting, prioritizing, and tracking my goals. I have tried the traditional method of writing them down on paper but never consistently reviewed and followed up. I've also tried various software solutions, but none of them 'clicked' with me till I came across a program called Goalscape. You can read my review of it at http://www.manifestyourgoals.com/goalscape-goal-setting-software-review
