Setting Personal Goals

Ranked #4,753 in Healthy Living, #88,909 overall

Will I achieve my personal goals in 2012?

Every New Year, do you make a resolution to quit smoking or to lose weight?

Do you find that however hard you try, you just never manage to keep them?

I know, sometimes, I do. In fact, I make them throughout the year.

Setting goals...

..should be easy

I've always kept them inside of my head. Not much good them being there though, which I've found out several times before.

I've decided to create a Squidoo lens which will, hopefully, help you make some plans and keep to them. If this, helps you, too to keep to your goals then please do let me know :)

Write and Publish my First Novel

At least one!

I've been wanting to write and publish a novel ever since I started a career as a professional writer in 2000. However, it just hasn't been my time, yet. So this goal is here for personal reference because one day I hope to succeed.

What hasn't worked for me:

I've never been able to get on with NaNoWriMo.
Using novel writing software hasn't worked for me either. The problem with the software is that it is too structured and I know myself that I cannot work in a structured way.
Critique forums and feedback.

The Problems?:

In the past, my attempts of writing a novel have failed because my plot has been weak and I've never been able to get past the dreaded 5, 000 word mark.

The Solution?

However, this time, I think I've cracked it and although I've yet to write anything down, I have it all worked out in my head how I would like this novel to be. I tried using a blog to document my journey but as they usually have to be updated regularly (approx. twice a week or more) I couldn't find enough material to do so.

Create a new you!

The Goal:

Up until the age of 30 and at the same time I moved to London, I've been a dress size of 12. I kept active everyday of my life working outdoors in stressful but exciting jobs and coming home and working hard looking after the house.

I will never go back to being a size 12 but I would love to go down to a size 14.

It's easy to get unmotivated and disheartened especially if you:

a) see no results quickly.
b) are on your own with no or little support.

If those two reasons above relate to you, then I can sympathise!

After a long time trying to find the best exercise for me that doesn't involve too much bouncing around, I've decided to take things slow. I'm going to:

- walk (unfortunately, I do less of this in the colder months so need to find an alternative for the winter),
- use my Nintendo Wii to do Yoga and Your Personal Coach workout
- alter my diet considerably but in small steps. I'm already omitting wheat but all this has done is reduced the pain and the stomach upsets. I have seen no weight loss. I'm also aware that after recording my diet intake, I actually eat, on average, just over the 1,000 calories. This is less than what I should eat. So, it is not my diet that is making me gain weight.

More exercise is the key to succeeding at my goal.!

Important!

How to Achieve your Goals

First you create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve.

Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals.

Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals.

Everyone likes to set goals and make new year's resolutions, but it's often hard to meet them or finish what you start. I would say sometimes that is because we set really lofty goals for ourselves. If we lower our expectations and actually finish something, we'll be in a better place to meet a hight goal for next time.

I set goals for myself all the time. Some I reach, others... I have found the act of setting goals, even if I don't reach them, makes a difference. It's time to sit back and evaluate my 2009 goals and start planning for the new year. You've given me some new ideas.
Thanks. And thank you for the blessing on The Victory Garden. I appreciate it.
