Godalming - My Husband's Hometown

The town of Godalming has a population of more than 21,000 and is situated in some of the finest countryside in southern England in the county of Surrey.

Godalming is midway between London and the south coast and both are easy to reach by public and private transport. This location has played a major role in Godalming's development since it was first recorded in the will of King Alfred the Great of Wessex in AD899. Narrow attractive streets, lined with many ancient and historic buildings, lie alongside the River Wey, and the town centre has been enhanced for pedestrian use.

Godalming is a town with many famous sons and daughters and in 1881 became the first town in the world to have its own electric power supply.

Godalming Information

A History of Godalming

Godalming is a town in the Waverley district of the county of Surrey, England, seven kilometres (four miles) south of Guildford. It is built on the banks of the River Wey and is a prosperous stockbroker belt commuter town for London. Godalming shares a three-way twinning arrangement with the towns of Joigny, France and Mayen, Germany. Friendship links are also in place between the state of Georgia, United States, and the city of Moscow, Russia. James Oglethorpe of Godalming and educated at Charterhouse School was the founder of the colony of Georgia.

It was recently voted, in a Channel 4 poll, the 4th best place to live in the UK [http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/best-and-worst/waverley-4th-best-place-to-live-in-the-uk-08-06-03_p_1.html].

It's made realise what a gem of a town I've missed out on when I've been in Surrey and it's definitely made the photographer in me want to visit!

Thanks for all the effort you've put into your lens and for sharing it with the rest of us.
