The History of Buddhist Goddess Kuan Yin

Also known as Quan Yin, Guan Yin or Kwan Yin

Kuan Yin was once said to have been born from the tears of Avalokiteshvara's compassion for the suffering in the universe. From his pain came a female goddess to ease the world's suffering. Other stories claim that Kuan Yin IS the female form of Avalokiteshvara which is why images of Kuan Yin may have masculine and feminine traits. There are even other legends that state Avalokitesvara can change forms and sometimes appears as a graceful woman. Regardless of the version, Kuan Yin is the compassion soul for all beings, male of female. Men and women have equal ability to spread warmth, love and joy.

Kuan Yin is sometimes depicted as having 1000 Arms! The legend says that she struggled with her limited ability to ease the suffering of so many people, that she split into 11 pieces with 11 heads. Her determination to help everyone grew until she had sprouted 1000 hands to help sentient beings in all reaches of the universe.

I don't really have one favorite deity. I seem to be attuned to several. I have sensed Kuan Yin's presence. I think she is here in this lens, too. :)

I am fond of reading spiritual literature. When I read about this Bodhisatva, I really could not help thinking that this vow was impossible to achieve. There are almost infinite beings in this world going round and round in the wheel of birth and death, and all cannot attain Nirvana. Liked the topic very much.

I love her and have a marble carving of her with the waves and a dragon at her feet. You have created a wonderful lens telling her story.
