Gods and Goddesses - ancient and modern art

As women become more of a force in our worldwide culture, goddesses also get more and more attention.

You will find some beautiful, some ancient and some modern art depicting goddesses from all over the world. You will learn something of the wide variety of themes the female life force has been associated with.

Fertility and justice are two classics - but what about death or wealth? From China to Europe; From Egypt to South American Inca - these female goddesses are tribute to the strength of women.

Isthar: Babylonian goddess of love

Victor R. Boswell created this beautiful and detailed reproduction of the Babylonian goddess of love. It is reproduced on Archival Photographic Paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail.

I think she's a bit frightening...

I like this depiction of the goddess of Love by Evelyn Paul - she looks fertile, and not too skinny :) Which is true to life I'd say.

Sea Goddess Art Poster

Alfred Gockel creates modern art in vibrant colors. I think this sea goddess is one of his best works. He found a flow that shows the movement of the waters perfectly symbolizing the sea this goddess rules.

Goddess Hathor Welcoming Sety I to the Afterlife

King Seti 1 probably lived somewhere in the 13th century BC. As an early Egyptian Farao his main accomplishment was the capture of Capture of Kadesh.

His well preserved tomb, from which this picture was taken, was found early in the 19th century. It is not only one of the largest tombs, it is also the first to be lavishly decorated.

Hathor was a very diverse goddess: This shows her to be a central Goddess of ancient Egypt. She was goddess of love, music and beauty, cheerfulness, music and dance. Also known as the Mother of Mothers and the Celestial Nurse who presided over women, fertility, children and childbirth.
Gods often also have a fearsome aspect. In Hathor's case she was the Vengeful Eye of Ra, the Lady of Drunkeness, and a goddess of the dead as Lady of the West. As Lady of the Southern Sycamore, the sycamore was sacred to her. It was from the sycamore tree that she was thought to hand out good things to the deceased in the afterlife, and so she was thought to be a friend to the dead.
It is as friend of the dead that we see her handing a Magic Collar to Seti I.

Greek Bee Goddess - Melissa

Melissa means bee. Bees were revered for their organizational skill. The natural antiseptic properties of honey helped make honey the favored food of the gods. There were several goddesses associated with bees: Aphrodite, Artemis, Cybele, Demeter, Persephone, Rhea, Ariadne and Neith.
