Godzilla

Ranked #27,419 in Entertainment, #309,660 overall

Since his first appearance in 1954, Godzilla has remained one of the silver screen's most enduring icons, appearing in over 28 films up to his 50th Anniversary in 2004.

In 2009 the big G returns on the world's largest screen in the Imax film Godzilla 3D to the Max!

King of the Monsters

Godzilla films are part action and science fiction, often driven by introspective character and ecologically conscious storylines.

The original film Gojira (produced by Japan's Toho Films), or Godzilla: King of the Monsters, is often cited as a parable for the nuclear age. A monster somehow transformed by nuclear radiation, with a destructive heat ray, Godzilla is as much a victim as those his rampages terrorize. Ultimately a new weapon even more dangerous than the atomic bomb, the Oxygen Destroyer, is used to exterminate him. The weapon's inventor considers sacrificing himself in the operation in order to leave the Oxygen Destroyer a mystery nobody else could duplicate.

Godzilla is a Kaiju, or monster. Inspired by The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and King Kong, his name came by combining the Japanese words for whale, Kujira; and the english-based "gorilla", gorira.

Godzilla: 3-D to the Max (Godzilla vs. Deathla)

Due 2009

This film was originally due in September of 2007, but there were delays putting together independent funding for the project. Godzilla 3-D to the Max will begin production in February 2008, and is due in theatres by 2009.

The world's greatest monster comes to the world's largest screen format in Godzilla: 3D To The Max. Godzilla is matched against Deathrah (or "Deathla"), a monster similar to Hedorah, who lived on pollution. The two monsters duke it out in a free for all that begins in the Brazilian rain forest and climaxes on the streets of Las Vegas. Like in Godzilla: Final Wars a lot of location shooting will take place outside of Japan. This production from the writer and director of Godzilla vs. Hedorah will be directed by Imax filmmaker Keith Melton.

In 2004, Final Wars was released as the "final" Godzilla film. Despite advanced FX, great writing, and film making, the Millenium series that began in 1999 failed to be theatrically distributed by it's North American licensee Sony/Tri-Star; and back home in Japan each release drew fewer movie-goers, fighting holiday-season releases of blockbuster American movies. Godzilla may return to a more regular feature-length release in the next ten-years, perhaps even a Japanese and American co-production to avenge the shortcomings of Tri-Star's 1998 version of Godzilla.

1998: Tristar's Godzilla

Although it can be an entertaining monster movie, among many fans it's regarded as an imitation Godzilla movie. After turning it down twice, director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) ended up spoiling a great opportunity anyway. Admittedly not a fan of the original Godzilla films, his production failed to capitalize on and enhance Godzilla's distinct charms. This Godzilla has no atomic breath, and no monsters to fight. Although the big G does manage to trick his human enemies a few times, in this film he's a giant mutant iguana whose gestures and expressions lack the character and personality of Japan's real deal. The film has an average music score with neither distinct nor memorable themes, but a pretty intense opening title by David Arnold, who previously did a great score for Emmerich's Stargate. Tri-Star's Godzilla does, however, have incredible sound design and some clever set pieces. The film is ultimately too long, interrupted by a Jurassic-Park-type invasion on Madison Square Garden and an ineffective love story --quite trivial compared to the tragic love triangle in the original Japanese film, which emphasized themes of sacrifice.

Godzilla Soundtracks on CD

Akira Ifukube's score for the original film ensured that the series would always have to live up to a level of sophistication. His themes are rousing, with some of the most infectious marches this side of Danny Elfman. Ifukube scored most of the Godzilla films until 1975, he then returned in the 90's until the end of the Heisei series. His deeply moving laments never fail to deepen the films' meaning and emotion. Considered the John Williams of Japan, his music is unforgettable. Ifukube also created Godzilla's trademark roar by rubbing a glove across the strings of a contra bass. He passed away in February 2005 at the age of 91.
