An endangered species is a population of an organism which is at risk of becoming extinct
An endangered species is a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters. Also it could mean that due to deforestation there may be a lack of food and/or water. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has calculated the percentage of endangered species as 40 percent of all organisms based on the sample of species that have been evaluated through 2006.IUCN Red-list statistics (2006) (Note: the IUCN groups all threatened species for their summary purposes.) Many nations have laws offering protection to conservation reliant species: for example, forbidding hunting, restricting land development or creating preserves. Only a few of the many species at risk of extinction actually make it to the lists and obtain legal protection. Many more species become extinct, or potentially will become extinct, without gaining public notice.

I found this book's assemblage of some one hundred endangered or threatened animals from around the world to be a unique and well done idea. You'll find little favoritism as the animals featured run from the well known to others that you may have never heard of, as well as plants. In particular I found photos of animals I've never seen photographed in books before, like the Pygmy Hog. It also contains a lot of information on conservation groups large and small from around the world.

The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species
The polar bear is a bear native to the Arctic Circle and its surrounding seas. The world's largest predator found on land, an adult male weighs around 880-1,500 lb, while an adult female is about half that size. Although it is closely related to the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrow ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. As it can hunt consistently only from sea ice, the polar bear spends much of the year on the frozen sea, although most polar bears are born on land.Polar Bear Art Print

3 subspecies of tiger are already extinct.In the early 1900s, these Tigers lived throughout northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern Mongolia and southeastern Russia. Today, the majority of the population is confined to a tiny part of Russia's southern Far East: the Amur-Ussuri region of Primorsky and Khabarovsky Krai. There are very few tigers in northeastern China and fewer still in North Korea. The South Korean population died out in 1922.

- While looking for information on "going green", I came across your lens about going green to save the earth. Good information on endangered species and promotion of the "green" cause on various fronts through T-shirts! My favourite is the one about wind energy conversion to electrical power through the use of wind turbines. Great lens!
