Simple tips for going green

Ideas to make your home more environmentally friendly

The first going green tip I would like to pass on is take it easy! You cannot green up your entire life. It is just impossible!

So start with the things that are easy to achieve. Focus on areas where simple changes can be made. Think about what is really important to you - you are far more likely to see it through.

For example, do you enjoy gardening? Then perhaps make eco-friendly choices as you decide what plants to add to help wildlife, such as bees, what compost to use and whether you can find organic pest control.

What about cooking? Then when you make that Jack O Lantern for Halloween, use the flesh for soup and roast the seeds.

Do you have a lot of electrical equipment in the home - it is easy to turn it off rather than leave it on standby!

Do you buy gifts? Of course you do! It's easy to buy eco-friendly gifts for every occasion. You just need to know where to find them!

Or what about giving up plastic bags? Carry a canvas tote bag in your purse whenever you go shopping - that is a very easy step to take, which is VERY environmentally friendly!

Buy a Canvas Bag

Reusable Shopping Bags

Why buy a canvas bag?

Did you know that:

* one canvas bag will eliminate the use of 1000 (yes ONE THOUSAND) plastic bags in its lifetime?

* hundreds of thousands of animals are killed by plastic bags EVERY YEAR?

* a plastic bag is used for an average of 12 minutes but takes hundereds of years to decompose in landfill?

I love how you get to the point (esp. about plastic bags) in this lens. Whenever people are given the truth it moves them towards change...certainly a gift of yours AJ! Going green tips I have, well, maybe conserving water and recycling like crazy (but I am sure I could be doing so much more). Thank you for an informative and educational lens. Sincerely, Rose

Great lens on helping people go green. I agree, it's a good idea to start simple and gradually expand if not it can get overwhelming with all the media attention and pressure. One of the problems to keep in mind when using canvas bags is to make sure to disinfect them for harmful bacteria which can cause and spread disease. **Blessed by a Squid-Angel**

AJ - these are wonderful ideas! I have a couple canvas bags for groceries, but my problem is that I carry them into the house then forget to take them back out to the car! I promise I'll keep working on remembering! : )

This is a NEW comment, because I don't think I've been here before :-). Very interesting green ideas. I've known for years that plastic bags were 'not good' -- for the environment and for 'just in general', but I had NO idea about the statistics you included about this -- use an average of 12 minutes each, then it takes hundreds of years to decompose. Now THAT is an 'awakening'. I see more and more people using canvas bags at the grocery stores, so I guess the message is getting through.

I recycle and use canvas bags and so does my extended family. Other ideas I didn't know or realize about and I thank you for this lens, these great resources and links, and for helping us all become more aware of how we can positively affect our planet. Well done.
