Rise Stevens, Habenera Carmen

Think you don't know "Carmen"? listen to this. You do! Bing Crosby introduced me to opera, to Carmen, and to Rise Stevens' magnificent gift. If you're not new to opera you know Rise Stevens' delightful voice and how very sweet she is! I'm lucky to have found her and Carmen in the heart-warming 40s movie, Going My Way.

Rise Stevens - A Life in Music - Cover

Stevens studied at the Juilliard School in NYC and with Marie Gutheil-Schoder and Herbert Graf in Vienna, then débuted as Mignon in Prague in 1936. The Met's leading mezzo-soprano for over two decades, she was the only mezzo to command top billing. Known for her Cherubino, Octavian, Dalila, Laura, Hänsel and Marina, she's celebrated for her Carmen. Retiring from the stage, Stevens became General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera Touring Company, later coaching the Met's new singers.

Rise Stevens - The Kennedy Center Biography

"Mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens saved not only the day at more of than one performance of the Metropolitan Opera--in 1961 she saved the entire season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations, a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene, and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later, the entire season was reinstated on schedule. President Kennedy and the nation had been devoted fans of the Met's reigning mezzo for almost a quarter of a century."
