Beginning in 2008 and continuing in 2009, many stores are 'Going Out Of Business'

First we heard about The Sharper Image and Linens N Things. Next came word that Circuit City would be closing its doors. Smaller retailers like ArtSelect also announced closures. KBToys added its name to the list of stores going under in an unprecedented move for a toy store: it announced an upcoming closure of its stores before the Christmas shopping season of 2008. Rumors spread that Home Depot to be the next store to go under. Where is the axe going to fall next?

And after that axe falls, which companies will re-emerge? The Sharper Image is back as a brand name. Circuit City is back in business. Linens 'N Things was back as quicker than they went..

This guy won't be 'Going Out Of Business Anymore'

Top 10 Stores Predicted to go bust - September 2009

Taken from the front page of Yahoo.com

Logging on to yahoo.com I was intrigued to see their article on Ten Big Companies That Are Veering Towards Bankruptcy. Who are the predictions?
  1. Hertz
  2. Textron
  3. Sprint / Nextel
  4. Macys
  5. Mylan
  6. Goodyear
  7. CBS
  8. Advanced Micro Devices
  9. Las Vegas Sands
  10. Inter Public Group

Their information was taken from The Business Insider (September 18, 2009) and is based upon market cap to enterprise value ratios.

Market Cap

AKA Market Capitalization

Find out what Market Cap or Market Capitalization has to say about the valuation of a company and how relevant this might be to predicting bankruptcy.

Market capitalization/capitalisation (often market cap) is a measurement of the size of a business enterprise (corporation) equal to the share price times the number of shares outstanding of a public company. As owning stock represents ownership of the company, including all its equity, capitalization could represent the public opinion of a company's net worth and is a determining factor in stock valuation. Likewise, the capitalization of stock markets or economic regions may be compared to other economic indicators. The total market capitalization of all publicly traded companies in the world was US$51.2 trillion in January 2007Global stock values top $50 trln: industry data (Reuters) and rose as high as US$57.5 trillion in May 2008WFE Report Generator including report for Domestic Market Capitalization 2008 (World Federation of Exchanges) before dropping below US$50 trillion in August 2008 and slightly above US$40 trillion in September 2008.

Enterprise Value

Firm Value (FV), Enterprise Value (EV) or Total Enterprise Value (TEV)

A slightly technical overview of how enterprise value is used in accounting, business valuation, financial modeling and portfolio analysis.

Enterprise value (EV), Total enterprise value (TEV), or Firm value (FV) is an economic measure reflecting the market value of the whole business. It is a sum of claims of all the security-holders: debtholders, preferred shareholders, minority shareholders, common equity holders, and others. Enterprise value is one of the fundamental metrics used in business valuation, financial modeling, accounting, portfolio analysis, etc.

Sad Goodbyes To Fond Memories

Don't go!!!

Sometimes a company going out of busines can be a little heartbreaking. Particularly when its one that is tied to childhood memories. The weekend of September 26, 2009, choked me up a little as landmark Chicago Family Amusement Park Kiddieland shut its doors.

What does bankruptcy mean?

Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 are the relevant bankruptcies for businesses in the USA

Read all about the history of bankruptcy, back to the origin of the term and bankruptcies in ancient Greece and onwards throughout history. Detailed listings appear covering bankruptcy law worldwide and many reference sites are listed.

Bankruptcy is a legally declared inability or impairment of ability of an individual or organization to pay its creditors. Creditors may file a bankruptcy petition against a debtor ("involuntary bankruptcy") in an effort to recoup a portion of what they are owed or initiate a restructuring. In the majority of cases, however, bankruptcy is initiated by the debtor (a "voluntary bankruptcy" that is filed by the insolvent individual or organization).
