Here are the main criteria to look for in looking for a successful home business:

1. Is your product or service in a huge expanding market? Here you want to look for evidence of rapid growth and acceptance of the product. For example certain areas are hot like health and wellness, however just because a product is in this area doesn't mean it's selling.

2. You want to look for unique consumable products. You want two things here. One is a non-unique product not easily available at a big super store. You should have a defining edge that really separates your product from copy-cats that in-evidently spring up. Two - you want it to be consumable or renewable so you continue to earn on a regular basis after the initial sale. But not only do you want it to be consumable, in the case of a drink or health product you want it to be enjoyable to take. Bad taste = non-consumable.

3. Next is Timing and trends - this is where the real money is made. Also this is where most people screw up because of ignorance. Maybe the best way to look at this is to picture an ocean wave. Some waves are much bigger than others and some travel much longer and further, but they all have the following in common. They all have a beginning, a time they travel and an end. Virtually every company or product has a wave of growth and then the sales stabilize at a certain point, perhaps slowly rising over time. Here's a question, at which of those points do you think it would be best to start marketing a product? The beginning the middle or at the end of the wave of growth? I'm amazed at the number of people just starting out marketing a product at the end of it's growth wave. The point is average effort at the beginning of the wave can produce extraordinary results, while those at the end of the growth wave are paddling like crazy just trying to catch up.

4. Of course any successful business-person knows they can be much more successful, employing the efforts of others. However, most people starting a business aren't prepared to employ others and deal with all the various headaches of employees. However, if you have all the right ingredients going for you in the first 3 criteria above, you will attract people to you who only get paid when they make a sale.
