Gokusen JDrama / TV Series

A brief backgrounder on the popular Japanese drama series

Yankumi in Gokusen 1 with her students

Gokusen or Gokudo no Sensei is a manga series by Kozueko Morimoto that has been translated into a live-action TV drama. The series first aired in 2002 and stars Japanese actress Yukie Nakama in the title role. It was so successful that TV specials, two more seasons (aired in 2005 and 2008), and a movie in 2009 followed.

Kumiko Yamaguchi (or Yankumi as her students have nicknamed her) happens to be the heir to the Oedo Yakuza family and the granddaughter of the leader. She applies as a teacher at an all-male private high school but she gets assigned to a class of delinquents. The story revolves around her experiences as she tries her hardest to give them lessons in both academics and in life. She is careful not to reveal her Yakuza background but her unusual upbringing ends up becoming instrumental and influential in the way she handles her rowdy students. Today's popular Japanese actors Jun Matsumoto, Shun Oguri, Kenichi Matsuyama, Hiro Mizushima and many others had their beginnings in the long-running drama series.

How many seasons do J-drama air for? Here in Korea, they usually go for 12 episodes (the most famous show went to 13 episodes). I can only think of one show that has been on for a couple years and I think it's because its set in traditional Korean times.
