The Gold Coast Hinterland
All of these attractions and more attract thousands of visitors of all ages and backgrounds each year. Sadly though, many visitors do not see past the man made attractions or the lure of the beaches. Most view the Gold Coast as a bit of a place to party and do not see the natural beauty that is sometimes hidden behind the glitz of it all.
Even some of the locals are blind to this. But hiding in the hills not too far inland from this glitter strip is The Gold Coast Hinterland - The Green Behind The Gold.

Gold Coast Hinterland - Many Natural Attractions
When someone mentions the Gold Coast, many things automatically spring to mind straight away. Things like high rise buildings, resorts and beaches, flashing lights, casinos and theme parks, but not usually rainforests, waterfalls, amazing mountain views, secluded swimming holes and lakes. But this page is here to change that perception. The Gold Coast Hinterland has many natural attractions that are within an easy drive of the coastal hotels.
There is also a vast array of accommodation in the hinterland to suit all budgets so the region makes a great relaxing weekend getaway, week long stay or even an awesome day trip to escape from the madness of the city. From the incredible views at The Best Of All Lookout at the southern tip of the Springbrook Plateau with it's World Heritage Listed National Park to Thunderbird Park on the northern slopes of Mount Tamborine and everything in between, it is a nature lovers paradise. The state of Queensland has the largest amount of National Parks in Australia and some of the most visited ones are located in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

Springbrook National Park
About Springbrook National Park

Rising 900 metres above sea level, the Springbrook plateau is home to a small community of people who are for the most part very environmentally friendly and eco conscious as they live amongst a pristine wilderness area. The mountain is also home to the World Heritage listed Springbrook National Park. This National park has many features such as the Best Of all Lookout with it's incredible views over the Tweed Valley all the way across to Byron Bay. It is accessed via a short 300 metre walking trail through the worlds most northern stand of Antarctic Beech trees. These trees are amazing. It is like stepping into an ancient world as soon as you set foot amongst them where the temperature drops immediately. Inside this small forest, it can be 10 to 15 degrees Celsius cooler than the temperature down on the coast.
Springbrook National Park also has many majestic waterfalls, some with drops as large as 100 metres such as Purlingbrook Falls, which is easily accessed down a short walking trail. There are a number of trails that are longer in distance (up to 17 kilometres long) which take you underneath some of these falls, to serene rock pools and through caves which were once home to local Aboriginals. The park has three sections. The main section is on top of the Springbrook Plateau, the second most visited section is the Natural Arch section on the lower side of the plateau in the Numinbah Valley.
The third section is the Cougals Cascades section which is found at the very end of the 21 kilometre Currumbin Valley Road. This road starts at the beach at Currumbin and winds it's way through this beautiful valley all the way to the park. The track is only 800 metres and is a sealed and safe track alongside one of the most beautiful streams on the Gold Coast. On a hot day, the numerous rock pools that are fed by the clean crisp water provide a great place to swim.

Lamington National Park
About Lamington National Park
Some trails are short walks and suited to beginners while others are steep and long, taking up to seven hours or more to complete. The well signed Border Track follows the NSW/QLD border along a ridge and links the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park to the O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in the Green Mountains section. This is a distance of 23 kilometres which can be completed one way in a day or in 6 to 8 hours depending on your fitness levels. My wife and I completed it in around six and a half hours. We saw people running it and have heard that it can be done in 3 to 4 hours running! This trail forms somewhat of a spine for Lamington's trail network with many other trails branching off it at some point.

Binna Burra
About Binna Burra
There are a number of walks of differing lengths and difficulties that lead out from this part of Lamington National Park offering mountain views, stunning waterfalls and plenty of encounters with wildlife. Many trails spread out from the main Border Trail which follows the QLD/NSW state border across the mountain tops to the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park.
OReillys Rainforest Retreat - Green Mountains Section
About O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat
As well as the hiking through the National Park, other attractions are the daily bird feeding and the tree top walk. This walk was the first of its kind in Australia and is along a 180 metre long suspension bridge which is suspended 20 metres above the rainforest floor. Halfway along the bridge, there is a ladder which leads high up into the canopy of a very large tree. The platform at the top gives great views over the surrounding mountains and valleys. The couple in this video seemed to have a great time there at O'Reilly's. It is a very special place for my wife and I too, which is why we chose to get married at the rainforest retreat.

Mountains or Beach?

The Beach - Give me the sand and surf anyday.
GeekGirl1 says:
Beach but from time to time, I also want to go to the mountain and see trees, birds, wildflowers etc.
The Mountains - The cool crisp air is much more comfortable than the hot beach.
Mount Tamborine
AKA Tamborine Mountain
The mountain has been pretty heavily cleared for this development so there are plenty of good lookouts on either side of the hill. Eagle Heights Hotel is the pick on the east side of Tamborine. With it's extensive views looking over the entire Gold Coast it is a popular spot to stop and have a drink or a meal. On the western side there is a lookout which has pretty amazing views over the valley below and there are mountains as far as the eye can see to the west. This area is also where the local hang gliders take off from and they can regularly be seen gliding above the mountain during the winter months. In the summer time they take off from Beechmont as the winds come from a different direction during the warmer months.
Before the mountain was opened up to settlers in 1878 it was covered with a diverse range of forest types. Although much of it was cleared for agriculture, some efforts were made to protect the natural environment of the area, with the first National Park in Queensland being declared in 1908 at Witches Falls. The Tamborine National Park is now made up of 12 separate sections of rainforest, both on top of the plateau and on the surrounding foothills. Some of the other attractions are Thunderbird Park where you can camp, collect precious rocks, climb through the tree tops on a ropes course or go horse riding and the relatively new Skywalk where you can wander through the tree tops on a raised steel walkway.
Beechmont
About Beechmont
Beechmont is mostly rural and residential these days with the two main residential villages being Lower Beechmont and Beechmont itself. The mountain was settled in the 1880's by timber cutters, but then turned to dairy farming before the area started getting built up. It is still a quiet place to relax as there are not too many people living up there, but numbers swell with tourists each weekend as the mountain views are so amazing and because Beechmont Road takes you to Binna Burra in Lamington National Park.

Numinbah Valley
About Numinbah Valley
The valley is situated upstream from the Hinze Dam and sits nicely between the incredible cliffs of Binna Burra and Lamington National Park to the west and the Springbrook Plateau to the east. To the south the valley opens up at the Queensland/New South Wales border to awesome views over the Tweed Valley in New South Wales. The road continues down through some really scenic countryside all the way to the town of Murwillumbah near Mount Warning. There are many glimpses of this majestic mountain along the road.
The Numinbah valley was first explored by timber cutters seeking cedar in 1845. This timber was then hauled by bullocks to Nerang. The area was settled in the 1860s, when surveyors mapping the Queensland/New South Wales border discovered a route through to the Tweed Valley. As well as the small village of Numinbah, other attractions in the valley are Camp Bornhoffin and the Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre which both cater for large groups of students from throughout the region. There is also Numinbah Trail Rides, which are a great adventure trail ride suitable for horse riders of all levels of experience. These 3 hour trail rides travel through scenic country with a guide who is experienced in all sorts of local history.
