Collecting US Gold Coins

US gold coins are a part of history. You can only find these coins in coin shops and usually at a premium. Everyone needs a gold coin in their collection, however, be careful of replica gold coins that are sometimes marketed as the real deal.

The Half Eagle Gold Coin is a 5 dollar gold coin, thus you can use it to buy five dollars worth of groceries. However, it is worth a lot more due to its gold content and collectability. The half eagle was the first gold coin minted by the United States.

The half eagle gold coin was minted from 1795 thru 1929, although no gold coins were minted between 1917 and 1928. The design has fluctuated over the years:

Turban Head, Small Eagle 1795-1798
Turban Head, Large Eagle 1795-1807
Draped Bust 1807-1812
Capped Head 1813-1834
Classic Head 1834-1838
Liberty Head Coronet, without motto 1839-1866
Liberty Head Coronet, with motto 1866-1908
Indian Head 1908-1916, 1929
