Introduction To Gold Coast Beaches
The Gold Coast beaches are, and always will be, the major attraction that entices holiday makers to the Gold Coast. They are the jewel in the Gold Coast crown.
Entertainment comes and goes with each passing fad and fun parks change with the prevailing technology. However, the 42kms of pristine ocean front, clean golden sands, ocean swells for surfers, secluded bays and estuaries for the less adventurous, bather amenities and surf life savers... these all ensure that the Gold Coast remains unsurpassed as a holiday destination.
Surfing is a major Gold Coast activity with young and old alike. Serious surfers head for the breaks at Burleigh Point, Duranbah, Kirra and South Stradbroke, being just four of the great locations that provide top surfing conditions. The Gold Coast hosts international surfing championships such as the Billabong Pro.
The national surf lifesaving titles were held at Kurrawa Beach at Broadbeach until 2006. The Gold Coast City Council is renowned for its beach safety initiatives and patrols more beaches than any other local authority in Australia. It utilises helicopters, boats, jet skis and watercraft in its rescue operations.

Southport - Broadwater Area
Jet-skiing, windsurfing and parasailing are all very popular and equipment rentals are available for visitors. The Broadwater has berthing facilities for cruises on the Broadwater and off shore charters for a day of game fishing.
Adrenalin rush junkies can dive off a platform suspended high above the water at Bungee Downunder. Marina Mirage is the home of stylish boutiques, waterfront restaurants and cafes. The superb marina is the home berth for luxury cruise boats, houseboats, fishing trawlers and yachts that slip silently through the channels of this calm water seascape.
Southport is the Gold Coast's northern business centre and still houses many of the administrative offices of local government. Modern department stores, cinemas, restaurants and a host of retail outlets are available in the area.
Surfers Paradise - Main Beach Area
Spectacular nightlife, nightclubs, bars and more restaurants per square kilometre than anywhere else in Australia... that's Surfers Paradise. Street buskers, calypso bands and magicians entertain the passing tarffic in Cavill Mall.
Major shopping centres and boutique retail outlets provide plenty of retail therapy and the kids find plenty of fun with the games and rides in the Paradise Centre.
A beach walk is a great way to appreciate the sheer size of the Gold Coast beaches and one such walk is to cosmopolitan Main Beach via Narrowneck. Head for Tedder Avenue with its mix of dining precinct and side walk cafes.
Broadbeach Area
The mall and surrounding streets have over 40 restaurants, coffee shops and bistros plus children's play equipment and fairground rides.
Resorts, apartment complexes and shopping centres dot the Broadbeach skyline. The popular Conrad Jupiters offers an island oasis of restaurants, bars, floorshows and 24-hour casino action. The casino and the nearby shopping and dining precincts are linked via a modern monorail.
Queensland's largest shopping centre is located in Broadbeach and it is easy to spend a day wandering through Pacific Fair with its cobbled streets, dazzling arcades and department stores.
Burleigh Heads Area
This unspoilt headland consists of a small National Park and koala park and provides excellent views of the surrounding coastline. Within the National Park there are a number of walking trails along the adjacent coastline. The popular Fleays Wildlife Park and Fauna Centre are located just west of Burleigh.
The beaches in Burleigh are lined with beautiful parklands and picnic and BBQ areas. Burleigh Heads is well known for good surfing conditions and regularly hosts surfing and iron-man competitions.
Palm Beach - Currumbin - Tallebudgera Area
The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best known natural attractions on the Gold Coast. A highlight of the reserve is feeding the rainbow lorrikeets which come swooping out of the surrounding bush at feeding times. The reserve has grown from a simple bird sanctuary to a major wildlife reserve with various Australiana tourist attractions.
Coolangatta - Kirra - Greenmount Area
The beach at Kirra is one of the Gold Coast's best known surfing beaches, with long off-shore breaks for the skilled boarders and smaller inshore waves for the beginner. The Greenmount headland provides protection from the rolling ocean swells and the protected beach is perfect for children.
Just around the headland from Greenmount is Rainbow Bay, a fabulous little spot and a great favourite for family groups. Duranbah is just around the corner and is one of the Gold Coast'smost popular surfing spots.
This region is the southernmost end of the Gold Coast and sits at the border of Queensland and New South Wales. Urban sprawl has resulted in Coolangatta and neighbouring Tweed Heads merging into one urban area, yet remaining twin towns.
