The Old School Hip Hop Video Showcase

Many fans of old school hip hop music will agree that the rap music that came out of the late 1980s and 1990s was unparalleled. Although hip hop music is experiencing commercial success like never before today, the amount of creativity and expression from each artist was so much greater back then. During the "Golden Age" of hip hop, you could find yourself enjoying rap music from either the East or West Coast and being enticed by deep lyrics as well as head-nodding beats.

Below are just a few of the many old school songs that were released during hip hop's Golden Age. By no means is this an all-inclusive list. It was just something to take you back in time, and make you remember how hip hop music used to be. If you can think of any of your other favorites from back then, leave me a comment and I just may be able to include it in an update for everyone to enjoy!

Feel free to sample or download the tracks to your iTunes playlist for some of the artists listed below.

Hip Hop's Golden Age

A period in hip hop music ranging from the late 1980s to mid-1990s said to be characterized by its diversity, quality, innovation and influence.

The Boogiemonsters

I remember driving in my car in high school and hearing this song for the first time. The flow wasn't like anything I had ever heard before. It took me a while to figure out exactly who the Boogiemonsters were, but the song has always remained stuck in my head.

"Recognized Threshold of Negative Stress" is quite possibly one of the most slept on singles in the history of hip hop.

Boogie Down Productions

I cannot say enough how much I love the song "My Philosophy". Personally, I could listen to KRS-One all day, but this was one of his greatest hits in my book. Couple that with the black and white music video and you have the makings of a true hip hop classic.

If you haven't been exposed to Boogie Down Productions already, make it a point to do so right away. It's hip hop at its finest.

Black Moon

This tape NEVER left my car in high school. Growing up down South, not as many people had heard of Black Moon but I did my best to spread their music with my friends. Top to bottom, I still say their first album is one of the greatest and most slept on in hip hop history.

Brand Nubian

Brand Nubian is still one of my favorite groups ever. Their music always had a way of making you actually listen to what they were saying. And they would leave you thinking well after the song was over. Music nowadays doesn't really go into many of the issues that they tackled, and they still managed to do so without compromising the quality of their music.

Old School Hip Hop vs New School Hip Hop

A lot of fans feel that the Golden Age will never be duplicated, however there are some who feel that current hip hop is king. Which side do you represent?

Marley Marl

Hands down "The Symphony" is the greatest posse cut ever recorded. I don't care what anyone else says, this one set the standard for stars combining their talents on one track. The only thing left to argue on this one is whether Big Daddy Kane or Kool G Rap had the best verse. You tell me what you think...

Slick Rick

If "Hey Young World" were re-released today, many of the issues Slick Rick raps about are still relevant today. When I refer older songs for my little cousin to listen to, this one is always at the top of the list. It's a socially responsible song that drives home a positive point. If you have a young hip hop fan, I suggest you have them check it out. One of the best songs by the greatest storytelling rapper alive...

Nine

If you ask people who has the grimiest voice in hip hop, they are probably going to say Busta Rhymes with no hesitation. If you give them a little more time, a few of them may remember Nine. He wasn't in the game for very long, but his first album was damn good. A seriously underrated artist and his album is seriously hard to find now...

MC Lyte

People argue about Nicki Minaj and Lil' Kim, but MC Lyte is the one that needs more attention. For years she held her own with male MCs without having to dress slutty or base all of her verses on sexuality. I honestly think female rappers today need to give her more thanks for opening the game up. She's one of the greatest all time...male or female.

Souls of Mischief

I just couldn't leave this one off. It was one of the feel good songs of my childhood. I remember thinking back then if we would really be listening to this until infinity. Hard to believe that 1993 was so long ago now. The Souls were a pleasant reminder that the West Coast wasn't all about gangsta rap and violence.

The Wizeguy: What We Need More Of (Puppet Musicals)
