The Golden Compass - MOVIE REVIEW

Critic: Frankie Kangas

Billed as a young adult fiction/fantasy, The Golden Compass is the first book in British writer Philip Pullman's trilogy, His Dark Materials. The main character is Lyra who is 11-years old. She lives in a world where human's have daemons -- an animal soul for lack of a better description.

I went to see Golden Compass because it had polar bears. I am so glad I did. I wasn't expecting much. I thought it would be for children, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Adults and kids both will love it. It has a good story-line, excellent actors, and the most incredible creatures and breathtaking scenery imaginable.

As an artist and animal lover, I was mesmerized by the ambiance - from the Daemons (the animal souls of people) to the street scenes; the skyship to the Egyptian ship's crew; from Nicole Kidman's character's clothing to the power generators on vehicles. Not to mention, the fabulous polar bears.

Above is a picture of our heroine, Lyra, and her polar bear warrior, Iorek Byrnison. Isn't he wonderful?

The attention to detail was amazing. When you see it, look at the art they have on the walls, the accessories in the rooms, on the tables, in the distance, look everywhere. Everything is candy to the eye in this movie.

The imagination of the artists who created each scene is boundless. And, the movie has everything in it from love, hate, horror, war and even greed. There is violence, so if you are a parent, take your child's age and understanding into consideration before allowing them to see the movie. But overall, it is for both kids and adults.

I can't wait to see if they release a tv show or video on how the movie was made. By the way, if you want more info, pictures, videos or get your own daemon, go to Golden Compass Movie.

NOTE: The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and New Line Cinema teamed up with The Golden Compass to bring attention to the plight of polar bears and every other creatures affected by global warming. See WWF's fantastic microsite for kids and adults at WWF Golden Compass.

Terms you need to know

Here are some terms used in the movie and book:

Alethiometer:
Is a truth telling compass. Lyra, gets answers to questions by using a series of needles that point to objects.

Daemon:
A daemon is something that each human has -- sort of a soul, which is an animal. Adult daemons can not change, however, children's daemons can and they do so depending on the need or situation. It's fun to watch how elegantly the daemons change during the movie. I love animals so I was mesmerized. Also, if a daemon is hurt, the person feels it as well.

Dust:
Dust is "dark material" which surrounds adults, but not children. Because it is not understood by the Magisterium, they call it evil and they want to get rid of it.

Magisterium:
According to movie Director Chris Weitz, "In the books the Magisterium is a version of the Catholic Church gone wildly astray from its roots". But, in the movie, the organization represents all dogmatic organizations.

One witch in the film says, "For all of (the Magisterium's) history it's tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can't control them, it cuts them out." Sounds like the Church during Inquisition, doesn't it?

The Golden Compass -- PLOT

Magisterium* knows all and tries to control all. They see Dust* as evil and hypothesized that since dust settles only when a person's daemon* can not change anymore (adulthood sets in on the human) they must find a way to stop this.

To this end, the Magisterium funds a group of researchers who kidnap and experiment on poor children and their daemons -- by cutting their daemons out. The children whose daemons are cut out are left without souls and die from shock and confusion.

Lyra, our 11-year old heroine, sets out to find her friend that was kidnapped and stop the researchers from their work. Along the way, she hears about a great polar bear warrior, Iorek Byrnison. Together they take on the Magisterium to save the kids and their daemons.
