Meet Lucy - The Frisky, Lovable and "Frustrating" Golden

Hey. My name is James and I've had Lucy now for 3 years. Before getting her, I did all sortes of research on dog breeds looking for a fun loving dog that's loyal and well behaved. All the books told me that a golden retriever was for me. So my wife Anna and I went out and picked Lucy from a nice couple that lived down the street from us.

I can tell you, I was surprised at how much work she was! I just couldn't get her potty trained for the life of me! She would pee everywhere! And she chewed her way through my new shoes, belts, furniture and everything else she could sink her teeth info. I tried everything...(I must admit, some "negative" things like spraying her face with water, spanking her with newspaper and yelling NO! NO! NO! BAD BAD DOG!) Not only didn't it work... but I felt mean and horrible.

That's when I decided to look for help. And what I found was a life saver. I found this great Golden Retriever training guide that taught me how to train Lucy without any kind of hitting or yelling and it really was easy. Not only did I train her to behave, but I also trained her to do all sortes of fun (and impressive!) tricks.

If you always feel like "the bad guy" while trying to train your dog, I really recommend the guide. It worked great for me.

Golden Retriever Training Tips

Golden Retrievers are both beautiful and lovable dogs to own. Whether you get your Golden as a puppy or as an adult, more than likely you are going to have to do a bit of training. While Golden's usually love to please their master, it is still important that you give them some training to keep them behaving as you would like them too. The following are a few great tips that will help you train your Golden Retriever in no time.

How Do I Start House Training?

Let's face it house training a Golden puppy is a difficult task, unless you know the right house training methods for Goldens. The problem is popular housetraining methods often backfire with these dogs.

A general tip to keep your dogs instincts and tendencies in mind. As a general rule, most dogs, and especially Golden's are clean animals. They prefer not to go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep. You can use this to your advantage and make sure that you set up a place where they know they can use the bathroom. You can keep them in their sleeping area at first until they fully grasp that they are to use the bathroom in one place only, and then you can let them go throughout the rest of your home.

What are Basic Commands to Teach My Golden?

There are definitely a few basic commands that you will want to teach to your Golden Retriever. The basic commands you will want to teach them include the commands to sit, stay, lie, and heel. You'll want to learn a simple step-by-step training plan that you can follow anytime you want to train your Golden Retriever to do something, wether it's new tricks, or stop annoying behavior. You'll want to start out with the sit command, and then work up through the other commands as well.

How Can I Stop My Golden From Chewing Everything in Sight?

Many dogs, and especially puppies love to chew up everything around them. It is important that you curb this while they are young or it may be disastrous in the future. I learned a great way to correct your Goldens unwanted behavior in the guide I read. The method is based on an easy distraction technique that the author used to training Police dogs.

One thing to keep in mind when you are trying to dicourage bad behavior is that you want provide them with toys that they know they can chew on, but do not make them like other things that they are not allowed to chew. You surely do not want your puppy chewing on your shoes, so be sure not to ever give your dog an old shoe to chew one as a toy.

Positive or Negative Reinforcement?

These are just a few tips that can help you to train your Golden Retriever. Most importantly you will want to build a trusting relationship with your dog so that he trusts you to lead him in the right direction. Also be sure that you use positive reinforcement instead of yelling at your dog. Positive reinforcement always works in a superior way and will help you get your dog trained much faster.
