Koi

A small outdoor pond with a few large goldfish or koi swimming around can be an excellent addition to your yard or garden. Here is some information about setting up and maintaining a fish pond. How to choose the right type and size, fish, and plants. There are some beautiful photos on this page and some links to help you get started building one.

Bridge Over a Large Garden Pond

Container Ponds

If you don't have the space for a large pond in the ground, you can construct a miniature pond in a container. They're moveable, easy to set up, and they don't cost very much.

Anything that holds water can be used. A barrel lined with plastic, plastic tubs, ceramic pots, old bathtubs, or basins. You could build a wood box of any shape and size that you want and put a liner inside of it. The interior should be a dark color to discourage algae growth.

If you want to have fish it would be best if the container is at least 25 gallons. The water conditions will be better for the fish and the pond will heat up and cool down slower.

The plants will need at least 3 hours of direct sunlight to bloom, but they should not have full sun all the time. The water will get hot.

Fill the container with water, then add the rocks and plants. If you don't use a pond pump or filter, you will need mosquito control. Fish can be used. Gambusia, the mosquito fish or goldfish.

Above Ground Fountain

Plants

Floating plants stay on top of the water with their roots below. They provide shade and control algae. In cold climates they need to be taken indoors for the winter, or replaced.

Submerged plants are entirely under the water. They are important for a balanced pond.

Water lilies are the most popular pond plants.

Large Koi in a Pond

Fish

Some good pond fish are; Fancy Goldfish, Comets, and Shubunkins. Mosquito Fish, White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Japanese Rice Fish, and Rosy Barb. They are all compatible with each other.

Things to consider about adding fish:

Chlorine- Wait a few days before adding the fish.
Water Temperature- Float the bag in the pond and slowly release the fish.
Jumpers- Some fish will jump.
Predators- Provide hiding places.

Safety

Make your pond as childproof as possible, and don't leave children unattended near a pond. Provide an easy way to climb out of large ponds that are built in the ground. Check your local building codes. You may be required to put a fence around your pond or do other things for safety. Check about underground utility lines when you are ready to dig.

Do You Have A Fish Pond Story?

  • survivoryea May 24, 2012 @ 9:17 pm | delete
We have been planning a pond project and this lens gave some good information - thanks
  • kindoak May 15, 2012 @ 12:38 am | delete
I need to move to a warmer climate zone. I do have a pond in my back yard that is about 500 square feet - but it freezes to the bottom during our long winters which makes it difficult to keep exotic plants or any type of fish.
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Apr 14, 2012 @ 9:07 pm | delete
I wish I had a fish pond story. Maybe I'll have one to tell as soon as I get my new dome greenhouse built and aquaponics tank installed.
  • BiminiBahamas Apr 11, 2012 @ 7:25 am | delete
I had a backyard pond for several years. It always gave me such joy!
  • suzy-t Apr 4, 2012 @ 8:13 am | delete
I love my backyard pond and this is a great lens. I had a wonderful collection of comets and some lilies but forgot one very important thing that you point out...Provide hiding places for your fish ! In 5 minutes last summer, a blue heron found my pond and cleaned it out of all but a few fish. I was devastated.
  • klash5 Mar 24, 2012 @ 10:01 pm | delete
You've inspired me, I have always wanted a garden pond. I think a container one is a great way to go for your first one.
  • hermaniv Feb 29, 2012 @ 9:14 pm | delete
I love garden ponds. Great lens. Thank you.
  • saerae01 Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:34 am | delete
WOW! Great lens and really really pretty pictures! When I get my own house I'm going to put 3 ponds in the backyard.
  • favored1 Dec 10, 2011 @ 10:30 pm | delete
My parents had a pond with a fountain. On holidays in the summer we used to cool our watermelon in the fountain until it was time to eat it (we washed it off first). I had several fountains in my yard in the past, but now I only have one.
  • hysongdesigns Dec 2, 2011 @ 9:10 pm | delete
I don't have one at the moment but have made ponds out of all sorts of stuff since I was a kid. I remember digging a hole in the back yard and lining it with plastic and catching tadpoles in the creek to put in my pond. I think I was about 8 years old. I've used bathtubs and washtubs too.
  • karmicchristian Sep 27, 2011 @ 6:18 am | delete

I made a pond once and it became home to frogs and more. I then added another made from an old bath, in this were two goldfish, imagine my surprise when I found they had a large family!
We had to move then and I do miss my ponds so much, where we are now would not be suitable for one. I have really enjoyed this Lens, thank you for sharing.
  • mountainstevo Aug 28, 2011 @ 4:31 pm | delete
We had one but since we have moved I have not had the opportunity to install a new one.

One of my first fun childhood memories -- from when I was still being pushed in a stroller -- was stopping by a goldfish pond in front of a house we passed every day on the way downtown.

There is just something about a backyard waterfall or fish pond that make me just want to sit and relax. I grew up with a backyard fish pond filled with fan-tailed goldfish. This article brings back lots of memories. Great job. Blessed by a SquidAngel. You are featured on Home and Garden SquidAngel.

Not only do the fish-ponds look lovely, they create a lively atmosphere. Just to watch the fish is a stress relieving activity. Koi are also good from the point of FengShui
  • VickiSims Nov 5, 2010 @ 11:57 pm | delete
We have created a very large pond, but created it mainly for the native amphibian species in our area so did not add fish since they eat up the young amphibians. We have enjoyed watching the native species discover and use the new habitat and have been rewarded with an evening serenade by a chorus of frogs every spring.
  • aj2008 Nov 4, 2010 @ 5:12 am | delete
We have a pond at the top of our garden but we built it for frogs not fish. However, because of our apple tree, there was too much shade for the frogs to want to breed. However, during the last winter we pruned the apple tree and hey presto, frogsspawn and lots of tadpoles.

We raised some indoors and released about 50 baby frogs back into the pond and lots of the ones we left in the pond survived as well - I really should make a lens!
  • KimGiancaterino Oct 17, 2010 @ 3:05 pm | delete
I bought a pond kit, but we have to do about 6 other projects before we can put the pond in. Great lens ... I will definitely be back when we're ready to move ahead with our own pond.
