I thought we were the only ones who had ever dealt with an upside down fish. I too thought it would be dead the very next morning, but I swear this fish lived on at least another year swimming upside down. Wish I would have found this page a lot earlier. Thanks for the great tips though!

My gold fish has been upside down for months! I took him out of pond last week and into small shallow tank of pond water. Didn't feed for two days then fed peas. I put fresh water salt in tank too, and all to no avail! He is pooping ( peas) but still upside down.... What should I do next?
  • aj2008 May 14, 2012 @ 4:30 pm | delete
I cannot comment about the fresh water salt and to be honest I think it is best to try one thing at a time. So if it was me, I would forget about the salt and persevere with the peas.

If the fish is "pooping" you need to make sure the water does not get too contaminated. Put fresh pond water into a container, let it stand to reach the same temperature as the room where you have the tank and then use it to change the water the fish is in - gradually.

Continue with the peas and hope that they work.
  • aj2008 May 15, 2012 @ 6:03 am | delete
I dont know about the salt - but I would try one thing at a time. At this point in time I would say keep feeding the peas.

But also be aware that if the fish is in a tank without any filtration then you are going to need to replace the water regualarly - it will get contaminated with urine and faeces.
  • Tanglepelt May 4, 2012 @ 10:06 pm | delete
My fish wont eat the peas. :(
  • aj2008 May 5, 2012 @ 3:54 am | delete
This is what has worked for me, so try the following:

make sure the peas are defrosted and remove the skin. Crush between your fingers until they are very small pieces. Feed to the fish but dont feed any other food.

Put the fish in a bowl with some of the water from the fish tank. Keep the water very shallow - only put enough water in to just cover the fish. This may enable the fish to stay upright and feed more easily.

But if it cannot stay upright, even in the shallow water, try hand feeding the fish - yes, hand feed. Make sure the peas are completely defrosted and in very small pieces - much smaller than the size of its mouth.

If the fish is able to stay upright in the shallow water AND it takes the peas, then gradually increase the depth of the water. Once it can stay upright in the bowl in deeper water, try putting it back in the tank.

You may need to keep the fish in the more shallow water for a few days. If this is the case then be aware the water may become dirty because of urine and faeces - refresh the water in the bowl with water from the tank every so often. Do not use water from the tap!

I hope this helps - do let us know how you get on.

I had to hand feed my fish but its doing a lot better already. It's already upright.

I tried the peas and even put a tiny bit of Epson salt in a container with the sick fish and it worked. It took about 5 hours, but our fish is back to normal. Thank you for this suggestion my daughter is so happy.

I went the aquarium store and bought medicine and i am hoping it will work..my fish has made some improvement but at the same time i am worrying about my other goldfish that is happily swimming around. will try the pea and hope it will survive. so dont want him 2 go but what can u do when u cannot save your fish

Hi there, Goldie the goldfish has been alive and well for 12 years now, my son says 13...great fish, lives alone in his tank but just recently been noticing odd behavior of being at corner of the tank fin up, head down and my son noticed that tonight he was upside down, looks like sleeping but breathing. I read your responses and will try the peas tmwr..but what about lettuce? I have that and was going to put some tiny pieces in there maybe just 1 or 2. I changed the tank water and lowered it about 1/2...Goldie who is 12 years old never had any filtration system by the way, just kept expanding the tank. For being 12 years old, not bad!
  • adamfader Dec 29, 2011 @ 12:41 am | delete
Cool lens! I had a goldfish swimming on its side all of a sudden and figured it was done for, but the next day it was still alive. It ended up living for about 2 more years. I guess it had some bladder issues.

Thank You for your advice on constipated Goldfish one of our fish has had those strings hang for months and today he was upside down. Everywhere I went this was said to be a bladder problem when I read your site and it mentioned constipation it made sense. So off to the drug store I went and bought regular epsom salt did as advised. Put the fish back into the tank at which time it was not moving. I thought maybe I had killed it. I started moving it around the tank wiith hand hand slowly it started to move. I kept moving it around when I walked by and see it wasn't moving. Now 3 hours later it is swimming as if there was never a problem. I have now add aquarium salt to the tank as I understand constipation is a common problem with goldfish and the salt helps them to digest better. Thanks Again my children are jumping for joy!!

How much salt and what size bowl do you use? How long do you leave the fish in the salt water? He has been upside down since Dec 5. I tried to feed him the peas but he is still upside down and our other gold fish is darting back and forth. Please help
  • aj2008 Dec 9, 2011 @ 4:37 am | delete
I would NOT use Epsom Salts at this stage. Put the fish in another bowl with some water from its normal fish tank.

Use just enough water so that there's approx an inch of water above the fish. The water needs to be as shallow as possible to allow the fish to swim around. The shallow water will make it more likely for the fish to be able to stay upright - when a fish has swim bladder problems, the deep water in the tank makes it even more difficult for the fish to stay upright.

Then feed the peas. If the fish cannot stay upright in order to be able to pick up the peas from the bottom of the bowl then make sure you have crushed the peas into as tiny pieces as possible and hand feed it a small piece at a time. Just hold the piece of pea as close to the front of its mouth as you can and let the fish take it - dont force feed it.

Just feed a small amount at a time. Then leave it for awhile and see if it will take more.

Wash your hands and rinse them thoroughly before you do this, to make sure there's nothing on your hands that is toxic to the fish.

Once the fish is able to stay upright, add some more water from the tank to make the water deeper. If it is still upright then you can return the fish to the tank. Keep feeding peas on a regular basis.

If the fish needs to stay in the separate bowl for more than a day, change the water with more water from the tank so the water is not fouled.

If you read through this page you will see I never gave our Fish Epsom Salts so I do not know what measurements to use.

    I hope this helps.

He was at the bottom of the tank this morning I just read your email at 9pm I took him out from the bottom and put him in a small bowl with an inch of water over him. I tried to feed the peas but he seems so lifeless now. He is on his side instead of upside down! That should be a sign of some sort. His breathing is shallow . I had read michaels post that mentioned the salt. I am not going to add any!! I just want him to live. Thank you so much! God bless you for helping us. We are at his bedside now. Lissa
  • aj2008 Dec 10, 2011 @ 10:07 am | delete
Lissa - make sure that the water is deep enough to cover the fish PLUS an inch. That way he may just be able to stay upright. Keep trying with the peas.

    Thinking of you.

I've a shortbody/bonzai flowerhorn, which started swimming upside down about 3 weeks ago. I treated her with Metro, Antibiotics (Terramycin) for 3 weeks, while keeping her totally on blanched green peas diet. She is now okay most of the times, but goes upside down again during night (lights or no lights). Can you suggest me what might be wrong. I saw your section on feeding live food, but I am not sure if that is going to work. Appreciate your help.
  • aj2008 Nov 14, 2011 @ 12:27 pm | delete
I would try frozen peas, as described on this page - aren't blanched peas pre-cooked? In which case they may have lost some of the fibre in the blanching process?

As for trying the live food, what do you have to lose? It won't make the fish worse but may just do the trick :)

I hope you fish gets better soon.
  • Shami Nov 15, 2011 @ 12:52 am | delete
Thanks for your reply. I am blanching peas at home, so I am hoping it should be fine. The problem with live food in India is that they carry a lot of diseases (as I 've heard from people), so it may be a bad idea. Anyway, do you know what are the other causes for a fish to stay upside down (apart from bacteria, fungal and parasite infection)?

    Thanks
  • aj2008 Nov 16, 2011 @ 12:40 pm | delete
In my experience, because it is the swim bladder that keeps a fish upright, then anything affecting the swim bladder will cause it to float upside down. I am not aware of any other causes.

When my husband and I were married the first pets we had were guppies. We bought a big fish tank. We then started adding fish to the tank. We were not very successful with the survival rate so then we tried finches, then cats and now dogs. The cats were great but we really love having dogs! The vet bills are getting so expensive now that I'm surprised anyone young can afford having a pet. Your books will help.

Oh, this is great. I have 3 goldfish that I paid 12 cents each for about 4 years ago. They were meant to be fish food for other fish. One of them is about 4 inches long now and really needs a pond instead of an aquarium. I just love these fish!! I want to check out your lens on the Rabbit hutch too. I love rabbits, also but don't have any as pets. Thank you. Love the jokes!

Very good lens! I'm glad your goldfish got to live a full life...so many don't get that chance because their owners don't understand how to properly care for them. I just wrote my first lens on good and bad beginner fish. Unfortunately, many try to keep goldfish as their first fish, but they are not a good choice for several reasons.

I've never encountered this problem, but now I'll know what to do if we find Hamilton Fish upside down. We've had him/her for about five years, and he's huge! We've had to get a bigger fish tank for him twice and now he's about to outgrow this one. I guess it's true that goldfish are really fancy carp--we're afraid he'll get as big as one! Thanks for a very informative lens (and shame on anyone who would say "Why worry about a fish?"!)

My children want goldfish but I am concerned about taking care of them properly.
  • aj2008 Sep 20, 2011 @ 3:48 am | delete
It's good that you are concerned about the welfare of any goldfish you may buy. These are the main considerations:

Make sure their tank is big enough - goldfish do grow

Use a tank, not a bowl, which does not have enough surface area

Regular cleaning and partial water changes are essential

NEVER use water straight from the tap - always treat it with something that will remove the harmful chemicals before you add the fresh water - be sure to follow the instructions carefully and use correct quantities

There's lots of sites that deal with the day to day care of goldfish and providing you are prepared to put in a small amount of time each week to keep their environment clean, then you should have no problems.

Follow the advice given on this page regarding feeding

Thank you so much for the advice! I really thought our fish was going to die, poor thing couldn't swim down to feed. I drained over half the water off the fish tank before it could reach for the peas, it was last night and when I was leaving for work in the morning it was still upside down, was fine however when I was back. I'm over the moon, the fish has been with us for over five years now, and it would be very sad, especially for the kids, to see it go. Thanks once again. I'll keep to your advice about fish diet as well. Greetings from Belfast!

I am soooo glad that I could help :) Apart from the fact that the peas could help, what a lot of people do not realise is that Goldfish are shallow water fish - so those lovely big, deep fish tanks we put them in are not as good as somethingthat is shallow :(

Our fish guy also recommended feeding a couple of peas per day, but he said we could serve them frozen. We would smoosh the half-frozen peas to loosen the shell and drop it into the tank. Since it was half frozen, it won't sink as fast and allows the fish to eat it before sinking.

Wow, what an amazing story and how great s/he lived for 10 years (I've never heard anyone keeping one that long, actually - swimbladder problems or not). And peas, what great trial and error that must have been to find it clears the blockage (let alone even see if the goldfish will eat it), brilliant. What a beautiful lesson for your children to see that with special care, a creature can live a good life, even with a physical problem. Glad this received a purple star. Oh and loved the humor too!

Thanks for this excellent lens. I babysat a goldfish named "Sideways" that swam more sideways than upside-down and we didn't know why. We kept thinking it would die but it just persisted. We fed it by pushing food in front of its mouth with an eye dropper and some homemade dropper-type thingee and they worked. So, yes we did successfully treated it. My friend moved so I'm not sure if "Sideways" is still alive. I'll pass on your lens url so my friend can read it too. Bear hugs, Frankie

Really useful lens. Thank you for sharing. I had goldfishes as a pet when I was a child. I loved them but for whatever reason they always died quickly, like about after a couple of weeks or months. Now if I ever happen to keep fishes as a pet in the future, I know what to do when I see that a fish is upside down.

We followed the advice tonight of feeding the inside of thawed frozen peas to our "Goldilocks". I now know she is not just "playing" with us by swimming sideways and upside down. She is very sick. We fed her the peas in a small bowl (thank you for that advice b/c she could not get to the bottom of the tank to get them either).
This morning she was sleeping on the bottom of the bowl and appears to be fine! I put her back into her normal tank and will check her again. She appears to be cured! Thank you!

Oh I am so pleased! Just do the same again at the first sign of troublke and think about following the feeding advice I give on this page.

Great lens. I haven't had this problem with my goldfish yet, though he's got ich this week. I'll keep this in mind when feeding him.
  • aj2008 Jan 18, 2011 @ 5:16 pm | delete
What amazes me is that it was so hard for me to discover the cure, despite the fact that it seems to be such a common problem, which is born out by the fact I get a huge number of visits to this page every week!

I never thought there would be a website for sick goldfish or up side down ones. My daughters started doing the up side down thing about 3 days ago. I thought it would of died by now but the poor thing just keeps on living. Now he is just laying on the bottom of the tank and will swim up side down sometimes. I hope the pea thing works.

my goldfish just died today.......it started swimming upside down this morning after refusing to eat for a couple days... i called the goldfish store and people there suggested me to put one spoonful of salt into the tank, and i did. I dont know if it was the salt or it would not have made it anyway... i am so sad
  • Lironah Jan 18, 2011 @ 5:02 pm | delete
Salt shouldn't harm goldfish; it's actually a cure for some fish parasites. However, it would probably have needed to be added earlier to save him.
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Nov 8, 2010 @ 2:56 pm | delete
Fish in aquariums have a chemical that will keep them from growing too big to fit their environment, that is a lot smarter then we are when we insist on getting bigger and bigger while wanting more and more.
  • livingfrontiers Oct 29, 2010 @ 3:09 pm | delete
I saw a show where a young man took a cork, and threaded it with some thread, and then did some surgery on his fish, so it swam right side up. The cork kept the fish swimming in the right direction, and then when it healed, he removed the cork. He used a Styrofoam cup too, but that was too much resistance! Don't you just love the internet?
  • SereneSea Oct 29, 2010 @ 7:48 am | delete
I am glad that you could cure the goldfish and this was the first time I read about fish swimming upside down. It is really difficult to help these tiny creations without harming them more from the already depleted environment conditions.

The pea trick works. My calico goldfish is part of a set (Dungeons & Dragons) and I thought tragedy was going to strike. Added some mushed, skinned peas to the tank for all to enjoy. ALL of the fish became insanely active for the next hour, and this morning, Dungeons was upright again!
  • Momsbusy247 Oct 23, 2010 @ 1:31 pm | delete

We raised a school of goldfish for nearly 8 years. They were little fish in a small garden pond at our garden wedding, then we moved them to a larger pond in our yard. They spent winters indoors in a bathtub sized pond my hubby made in our foyer. Over the years they expanded their family in the summertime till we had 24 fish of various ages and sizes. Some were up to 9" long. This spring a blue heron discovered the goldfish shortly after they moved outdoors to the big pond. Sigh. We have no more gold fish ... until next year. I love this story of AJ the goldfish doctor! 10 years is nice long life for a goldfish.
  • aj2008 Oct 7, 2010 @ 7:56 am | delete
Oh no, that is so sad - dont you just hate herons sometimes! We dont keep fish outside - but local people have to be careful with their fish ponds, because we have one of the largest heronrys in the UK nearby!

Sorry to hear your goldfish finally succumbed but he sure did live a long life! My husband and I had four goldfish once and one of them suddenly began to swim upside down. In our case it was either a contagious disease or something we fed them because despite setting up a temporary fish hospital in our kitchen trying to save one after the other, all of our fish took ill and died. We loved those little guys but haven't brought any more goldfish into the home since. Your frozen peas idea will be tucked away just in case, though. Very interesting!

THANK YOU... Yesterday morning my oldest daughter thought our goldfish had learned a new trick, to swim upside down. I took your advice and gave two of our five goldfish mushed frozen peas (in their own bowl, not the tank) within a few hours, both fish were just hanging out at the bottom of the bowl waiting to join their family. My husband was amazed and has dubbed me the 'Goldfish Whisperer."

I've found that my Calico Ranchu gets swimbladder problems if she eats flake food (which floats near the top of the tank, thus causing her to gulp in air while eating), and that the best way to treat it is to remove flake food from her diet and instead feed her boiled frozen peas for 2 days, than fast her for one day, than switch her diet to sinking pellet food instead.

My goldfish has been swimming like this for sometime! Sometimes I think he is dead because he is floating upside down on the top of the water, but sure enough he is always okay. He eats still and I haven't noticed any other problems... If he is always okay and has been swimming like this for close to a year is there any reason to try and fix him?
  • aj2008 Jan 26, 2010 @ 1:28 pm | delete
What is there to lose by trying to fix him? I think although he looks OK he must be very disorientated and uncomfortable. Fish did not evolve to swim upside down and the cure may just be a few crushed peas. They certainly wont make him worse :)

I had a similar experience. One of my celestial eye goldfish has been occasionally swimming belly up for about 6 months - I thought he was just a clown! It does seem he is blind and so I also thought maybe he couldn't tell the difference between up and down. I have occasionally put him in a net box inside the tank so he can get rest and his own food. Seems to work. When one of my black moors went belly up a couple weeks ago I got on the NET and searched too. Found the suggestion of peas to clean out the intestinal track. Worked like magic! I pop the peas out of their shell, smash them up and feed them to them. I actually drop some into the blind celestial eye's mouth as he tends to feed at the top. The other celestial eye feeds at the bottom. I have also turned the net box on it's side at the top of the tank and I put peas inside it and usher in the celestial eyes with a net if they don't go on their own - which they actually do sometimes. Seems whenever I use the flake food, the celestial eyes end up upside down. So, no more flake food in that tank. It's fine for the comets in the other tank, but the fancy goldfish are now being treated like royalty -- handfed vegetables and fruit -- they LOVE it!

Frozen peas? Who woulda thought! This is really interesting. No idea fish sometimes swim upside down or why they would. I've been enlightened, thank you! Speaking of upside down critters, I recently saw a fly FLY upside down. (But that was only after I'd swatted it and stunned the thing. I guess it is a case of "give peas a chance"! How truly amazing, it makes complete sense that fish need a variety of food to be healthy, but I would have never thought of it on my own! this is the best information I have found. My son (3years old) feed the fish without permission the other night. I was upset, thinking great now I will have to clean out the tank tomorrow morning. We went to bed as normal, in the morning I got up to find my oldest goldfish was floating up side down at the top of the tank. OMG, I started freaking out, she would swim around the tank trying her best to stay right side up. I checkd the PH and it was way off, so grabbed a bucket and some water from the tank placed her in it and corrected her water PH. I left her there pretty much all day, I did 50% water changed got the PH right, of course my other fish seem find. I thought for sure she was going to die. I couldn't believe how upset I was about a fish. In the evening, I figured I would place her back in the tank and to my surprise a hour later she was swimming normal. I am sure that the half a bottle of pellet food my son placed in the tank casued this promblem. Thanks for the info.

Never heard of such a thing before - the things you learn on Squidoo! My friend had a fish that would (alegedly) just swim in one direction but he put that down to the fish only having one fin. May not have been true, of course but made a good story after a couple of pints.

  • kiwisoutback Jun 15, 2009 @ 1:57 pm | delete
I agree, fish do need other types of food besides those standard flakes. If you can keep a live plant or two in the tank, they'll often eat that, and it will help balance out the pH. I never knew the upside down swimming was related to a possible lack of veggies though, but it makes sense. I remember my fish had those "long strands" sometimes if their diet wasn't varied enough.

I don't have a goldfish, but I've always wanted to have one (and we've 4 naughty cats, so it would be like getting an extra dinner for them =) I've heard the stories that people thought that their goldfish is dead, and then it ended up in the toilet. Just wondering, how many "goldfish lives" could be saved, if people just "first think then do". Very useful information here.

so much better answer! very helpful, I will pass this on to my relatives who have fish, I just have dogs...

Very nicely done my dear! Gosh, I could see this as a title of a children's book, "Mummy, why is the goldfish swimming upside down?" !!!!!

Okay..........my god this was great. But, I am a fan so why wouldn't it be. Although, you now have me wondering about all the goldfish I've given the Davey Jones' Locker burial rites via the porcelain coffin.

Great lens, I really could have used your help a few years ago. My fish was unable to swim down into the water he get bobbing to the top despite his best efforts. Yes, he died before I could figure it all out. I knew it might be a problem with the swim bladder but that was it :(

Well, it sounded like the end of the world. Like you, I say, "What!" about all of the so-called treatments. You went around the world to find a solution, and it was in the freezer. How about that?

Not only are you a wonderful mom and person, you've brought important information to all of us who may run into the same problem with their pet fish. Love the lens - informative, visual, and humorous. 5*!

Oh me! I never knew a fish could get constipated. This was so interesting and informative. I guess I will need to make sure we have frozen peas on hand for the next time we have an upside down fish. We have a small pond in the yard and every year we loose a few. I read every word and sure enjoyed the jokes thrown in. Great lens.

I am honestly sitting here laughing at 8 a.m. This is a very narrow niche, AJ! Great information and presented with humor, too. Nobody but a supermom would do that much research for a pet goldfish! What a super mommy you are! Your kids are blessed to have you! Delightful! and informative! I raised fish for years and never knew this.

Oh yes, I've come across this several times over the past 10 years or so keeping goldfish. I now only keep the hardy kind of fish because I've lost so many! :) Good lens, great and important topic 5*

Wow. I've never heard of this. But I've felt like that poor fish before.
